Yesterday, I posted about my tough decision to spend big on videography, and keep the budget modest for wedding bands. But I couldn’t settle for just any ol’ plain band, so I scoured the internet for a palladium or titanium band that suited me. Frustrated, I clicked over to Etsy to see some clever indie designs, and it was love at first sight:

Here’s where I should confess to over-thinking, plotting and planning:
How sweet it is. Custom M&Ms and Blueshoes2’s rings make for an irresistible combination.

I’ve mentioned before that Mr. Cardigan and I aren’t going the traditional route when it comes to our wedding music. We knew from the beginning that we’d be skipping the traditional music, as did most of the people who know us well. In fact, one of the first things a friend of mine said to me upon finding out I was engaged was, “Oh, please tell me you’re not playing Canon in D!”

Now, that’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with the traditional ceremony music.

My first dress fitting is coming up next weekend. I’ve had this scheduled for months now; my seamstress is a popular lady, and we had a hard time getting something on the calendar.
It was originally scheduled for the end of June, but then she had to reschedule. We tried to find another Saturday in June, but *gasp* they were all earmarked for something else! Between other folks’ weddings, our own wedding, and family obligations, our summer was filling up. Oh, and did I mention both Husk and I are training for our very first marathon, to take place exactly two weekends before the wedding?

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
That’s the Pre-Wedding Bob for all you acronym neophytes.
Or I just made it up.
Take your pick.
Anyhoo, like many brides-to-be I’ve been growing out my hair. I am not really sure why I decided to prescribe to this time honored tradition, because even with my super hair growing powers, it’s not like I’m gonna be Rapunzel (she’s the long haired one right?) come September. Then again, my most favorite hair inspiration ever does involve long(er) hair. You remember the ’60s right?
So with the wedding fast approaching, I’ve been patiently putting off cutting/dyeing. I figured I’d wait until a few weeks before the wedding and then actually make a decision. Yes. It seem(ed) a little crazy, even to me. But whatevs.
Then this past Saturday I just happened to be in my stylist’s neighborhood…

…I confess to the crime—I am a drawing cheater.
Though I have the capability of drawing and don’t consider myself to be too shabby, I don’t really have the time or the patience right now to perfect an illustration.
Why the need to draw?
Well…it’s all because of our invitation design concept. Though it is still up in the air, we both like the look of hand illustrated florals/botanicals as focal points.
I love the look that they offer and the sense of class and elegance that comes with it (mmm, vintage-y goodness).
Here are some great examples of inspiration for our invite design:

Now that we’ve decided on a cruise for our honeymoon, it’s time to start putting together my vacation wardrobe. I’m so excited; it’s by far the fanciest thing we’ll have done as a couple. In fact, it’s our first real vacation together! We’ve only been on camping trips, so this will be a luxury. I’m one of those packers who has each outfit lined up a week in advance. I don’t over-pack, but I do like to look cute and have options. I have some cute dresses in mind, but let’s start with the good stuff: swimsuits!
I bought all these lovelies from InSwimwear.com. I love that it’s a women-powered business, and a Texas-born online shop. They ship everywhere, and have great deals (like joining their Facebook fan page for 25% off your first order). Here’s what I picked out:
We have all heard the little saying, “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, and while I have heard that there are actually brides out there that DON’T overthink every single last detail (including those associated with this rhyme), I was just not one of them. I did not just hope they would all come together at the last moment—no, this type A gal obsessed for months until I had the perfect set of little items to bring me luck. Our photographers, Jessica Oriole Salay of Oriole Photography and Jenny McQueen of Capture, were amazing and caught all of these little details for me perfectly. First, something old…
I have a thing for rubber craft stamps.
I don’t know if stamping is going a bit out of fashion now, what with all the other things you can do with paper design, but I can’t get enough of it. To me, stamps, especially when embossed, are as timeless as letterpress, but more affordable. Spoiler alert—our invites will feature roses stamped on them and then heat embossed. Oh and lace is involved in some way. (OK, no more spoilers now until the real deal!)

So I promised details on the engagement and how he popped the question, so here it is!
We bought our house in the summer of 2008. Everyone (family, friends) kept asking the same question: “When are you going to get married?” and he would always have the same response, “We just bought a house. If you want to make donations, I will gladly accept.” I would just roll my eyes and laugh because I knew we couldn’t afford a ring right now, nor to get married.
Thanksgiving rolled around, and all 28 family members squeezed into our brand new house for yummy dinner. Every Thanksgiving we write our names down on a piece of paper and everyone picks a Pollyana name for Christmas. Well, unbeknownst to me, Mr Handy picked my name.
We are terrible with secrets and we promised this year we would try not to tell each other who we had. Well, Christmas rolled around and we certainly didn’t peep about who we had. At Christmas dinner, everyone was g sitting around, laughing, conversing, and excited about the holiday.

I was having brunch a few days ago with Mr Trail Mix and several of our friends, a few of whom are engaged. The subject of wedding bands came up and one of his friend’s fiances asked to see mine. I eagerly raised my hand (come on, you know you all love to show off the bling, I’m not the only one!), only to sheepishly lower it when I realized that I had forgotten to put on my rings that morning. And then to make matters worse, when the subject turned to men’s wedding bands, we all realized that Mr Trail Mix’s hand was naked too! (In his defense, it’s at the jewelers getting resized. But still…)
So there we were, a couple of newlyweds not even married a month, and neither of us were wearing our wedding rings. We did get a few raised eyebrows and surprised looks when I explained that I don’t wear my set that often, to be honest. When I’m sleeping, cooking, cleaning or running, I take them off. When I take a shower or go swimming, I take them off. Sometimes, I just wear one band (I have two bands plus the engagement ring, all different) because it’s easier, especially in this New York City humidity, where my fingers resemble plump, Italian sausages. I always wear them when I leave our apartment, except when I forget to put them back on. Which happens, sadly, more often than I would like to admit.
Back at brunch, one of Mr TM’s friend’s commented that she never takes hers off, ever.

Hey y’all!
It’s time for not one, but TWO Houston bee meet ups! That’s right, there was so much interest that we decided to split it up into a North Houston meet up and a South Houston meet up!
On the 29th, the South Houston ladies are meeting up at Cafe Adobe on Westheimer at 6:30 PM for dinner and drinks! To RSVP, head on over to this post on the boards!

And then on the 31st, the North Houston ladies (plus me and possibly even a guest appearance by Mr. Cardigan!) are meeting up at Chuy’s in the Woodlands at 11:00 AM for some yummy food (creamy jalapeno, anyone?), ‘ritas, and wedding talk!
Oh, hello there, hive! Long time, no see!
We did this cah-razy thing and went on vacation. Some people might consider it “a weekend” but I say if you leave early Friday and don’t come back ’til mid-day Monday, you leave the computer at home and sleep a lot, it probably counts as vacation. Plus I want to pretend I’m all luxurious and can do things like take vacation. So we went up to my family’s cabin, spent some time with neighbors, spent some time with my mom and brother, slept, and read books. And napped. Did I mention we slept? I was apparently suffering greatly from being awake for too long, but don’t worry! Problem solved!

Like many other bees, I’m doing my honeymoon recaps before I do our wedding recaps. So, let’s get to it! To start off, Mr. FF and I had kicked around a lot of ideas pre-wedding about where to go on our honeymoon. We thought that we had settled on a California road trip style honeymoon, driving from San Fran down to Orange County, but soon realized that we would most likely be pretty tired after the wedding and didn’t want to spend our honeymoon in the car. (Side note: this was a great decision on our part, since we were dead to the world for pretty much 2-3 days after our wedding.)
So, what did we decide? The good-old honeymooner stand-by: Mexico! The idea of an all-inclusive vacation was very appealing to us, so we weighed our options decided on Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Helping us make that decision was the very helpful Katie Frederick, whom I had found while reading Utterly Engaged magazine. (And no, she’s not paying me for the plug!) Once we had narrowed down a *final* location, Katie took our budget and our ideal length of stay and worked her travel agent magic and gave us three or four options to choose from. We finally chose the Royal in Playa Del Carmen, and in a Royal Beachfront Room.
