If you’ve been paying super close attention to my posts (which you should… there will be a test) then you may have noticed that I’ve mentioned having a “welcoming celebration” for our guests the day before the wedding, like the lovely Mrs. Perfume:

I didn’t want to do just a rehearsal dinner because I knew that most of our guests will be flying in from out of town, and we rarely see them as it is! It would be a shame to limit our rehearsal dinner to immediate family, bridal party + SO’s and grandparents, so we decided to include everybody!
Here’s where things get a little murky for me though:

… is my older sister. I feel like pictures of my sister’s wedding turn up in a lot of my posts and I figured it would be a good idea to just come out and do a post about the wedding.

Customized Wedding Creations is known for their unique, hand painted and custom aisle runners, and together with Ten23 Designs have recently launched the new VLA (Very Lovely Alternative) Collection! The VLA Collection features non-woven aisle runners with a wedding logo applied in the form of a custom decal rather, than paint. The best part about a VLA Collection aisle runner is that it can be completed with a 3x quicker turnaround than a custom hand-painted runner. To celebrate the launch of the VLA Collection, Customized Wedding Creations and Ten23 Designs are teaming up to give away one aisle runner, up to 100’ in length in white or ivory, with a personalized logo in the “Happily Monogram” style, PLUS a 2’ x 4’ custom dance floor decal to match the custom aisle runner to one lucky Weddingbee reader!

Because these designs are custom, to enter this contest, your wedding date must be AFTER August 9th, 2010.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
So, Olivia Newton John actually bugs me. But that’s not what this post is about. And sorry for totally getting that song in your head now.
Despite my woes about over-drinking, I did some great things for my body in the last year. I got proper running shoes and ran my first half-marathon in June; I couldn’t run more than a mile last summer, and I ran nine in June without stopping to walk. Shortly after the ‘thon, I jumped into Bikram yoga after never having tried yoga at all, and I feel great after every class.
If a See Jane Run marathon or 5K comes through your area, you should DO IT because they give you chocolate and champagne at the end. Ladies only!
Way back when, I shared our dirty, little secret - we don’t like cake. After going through all of our options, the most logical choice was pies made fresh with all of the local berries and fruit that are available in Washington in the summer. We found this adorable little bakery called, get this, Sure To Rise - how cute is that?
We settled on 3 large pies and 80 mini pies in varying flavors (blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, apple, peach and triple berry). Because I wanted the pies to be displayed sporadically on the pie table, I knew I needed a way to identify the flavors for our guests. Enter pie flags.

When Mr E and first started figuring out who would be part of our bridal party, my brother asked, “what happens at the bridal party? When is it, what is the dress code and am I invited?”
*shakes head* Let’s just say he hasn’t been to many weddings before (or any, in fact). Good thing we love him anyway.
And, yes, he is “invited” if he wants to put it that way. In fact, Mr E and I have decided to have the majority of the bridal party made up of our respective siblings. Growing up overseas, and, for my part, in a remote area, your siblings become your close friends, despite age differences. As the eldest of four, I have shared so many of my life experiences with my brother and two sisters and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Mr E is the youngest of two, and he and his older brother have always been as thick as thieves, getting up to all sorts of mischief together, so it only makes sense that FBIL stands by Mr E’s side on his wedding day. In addition to our siblings, we have also each picked one of our good friends to join us.

No, really, we do. Or, at least we WILL. I have spent the last year collecting these…

These are not our jars, but you get the idea. The reason I don’t have a photo of ours is that they are scattered in various corners of our garage and spare bedroom. It would be quite an undertaking to gather them all together for a photo. I realize I need to gather them up soon, anyway. But why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?

A while back, with 8 months to go until the wedding, I couldn’t help but think of how much I had hair regret. The thing is that I tend to have phases with my hair length. I let it get pretty darn long and oh-so-pretty until I get tired of it being long and then… chop! Chop! Chop! You can view the trend yourself in my lovely hair timeline that I’ve created just for you!

Unfortunately, this cycle began again in late 2008 and I had kept cutting it short up until engagement day (June 2009).

They’re done! Yes, I am that bride who has invitations printed and fully assembled three months before they even need to be mailed. But it’s definitely worth it, because this summer is revving up to be an incredibly busy one! And whenever Mr. SD laughs at me and my over-achiever-ness, I just remind him that now I can concentrate on lots of other things, like nagging him to do his laundry. Or better yet, forcing him to allow me to use the table saw.

If you can’t already tell, I’m slightly obsessed with all things nautical. Especially nautical weddings. The coolest one I have ever seen was found on the Armorology blog, photographed by WeddingbeePRO, Amelia Lyon.
I’m in love with every detail of this wedding, I love the navy and white color scheme with pops of aqua.

I really wanted to buy fans for our wedding guests so they could cool themselves down in the potential HOT July heat. First I considered the traditional Chinese fans, then thought about the traditional palm fans from the Philippines, and then latched on to that idea. Last February we went to the Philippines and I saw that the fans are everywhere and often with embroidered text so I thought that would be an awesome idea on how to personalize them. I tried and tried with all might to get some of the people who visited the PI (Philippines for short) to bring some back since they would be cheap straight from the source, but no one could or had the space/time to.
Then I remembered the great Martha Stewart Floral Fan template I saw a few months back. I was always drawn to it because it was a dusty coral color—just like our wedding—and very whimsical. So I decided to go with this idea. It would potentially save us upwards of $100 dollars so I was especially keen on the idea.

So here is how it went:

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I’m a total sucker for surprises. I love them. The only problem? I have a bad tendency to ruin them.
Case in point: Mr. Cardigan and Mom Cardigan wanted to give me a surprise 18th birthday party. It was such a sweet idea, and I had always thought it would be awesome to have a surprise party. It was going great and I had no idea. Until, about two weeks before the party. I was hanging out at Mr. C’s house, and my mom called him to discuss some details. Annnd, my mom has a tendency to talk really loudly on the phone. Like, so loudly that you’d almost think she forgot there was a phone and was just trying to yell loud enough for you to hear her from wherever she is. It’s bad. So, I was sitting next to Mr. Cardigan, and of course…I heard what she was saying.
I thought about not saying anything, but it would be no fun to have to fake surprise when we show up to the party. So, there was no surprise party for me. It’s happened a million other times with other surprises - if I don’t accidentally hear something, then I think too much about what’s happening and end up figuring it out. It frustrates Mr. Cardigan to no end, because he’d love to surprise me, but somehow he just can’t!
Are you having a hard time seeing where all of this is going to tie into my honeymoon? Well, let me explain.

During my recent travels up and down the East Coast I stopped in Baltimore to hang out with Veggie Sister Carrot. During my visit we went to a nice big Anthropologie store, a special treat for me since they have yet to expand to New Zealand. (Anthro- If you’re looking for a Kiwi store manager, I could be convinced to take on the job). I wasn’t really looking for anything particular, but if a dress happened to fall into my arms that could work for one of two upcoming friends’ weddings, my bridal shower, or our rehearsal dinner, I wouldn’t turn it down.
Going into that store is a huge exercise in self-restraint. So, before going in I had to give myself a little motivational speech. I reminded myself that between my four sisters and the superbly fashionable Momma Veggie, I have five closets worth of dresses that could work for these events. I reminded myself of the US-Kiwi exchange rate, which is not that favorable for purchasing yummy frocks on my meager NZ salary. I reminded myself of the things in my life that make me truly happy, and make me feel beautiful. And then I tried on about a dozen dresses.
I ended up with two contenders:
