Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

Post Office + Wedding Planning

August 2nd, 2010 @ 4:14 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

= One big, giant headache for Miss Cardigan.

Let me tell you all about it. You see, I’m moving. And about two weeks ago, being the good, diligent planner that I am, I decided to set up mail forwarding. I had it set to start on the day we move in, and I figured we were all good to go.

This was right around the time that Mrs. Cola was mailing her beautiful headband to me. In this general time, I also ordered my veil. Then, suddenly, I began to notice that while Mr. Cardigan was receiving a normal amount of mail, I was not.

In fact, I wasn’t getting any mail at all. Normally, that’s not that unusual, but since we’re, you know, planning a wedding, I’m getting a lot of mail. A week went by and I still didn’t have the headband, or my veil. Then two weeks. I was getting antsy, so I checked the tracking information on my veil—and it said it had been delivered. Only, I most definitely did not have it. So I called the post office. Guess what? Turns out my postman had decided to start forwarding our mail TWO WEEKS before I asked him to. So my mail was going to the new duplex instead of to my current apartment. He left a message on my phone and let me know that he was so sorry, and that he’d get my mail back to me ASAP.

I was angry, but at least I knew where my stuff was. Three or four days later, I finally got Mrs. Cola’s headband. But no veil. I called the post office, and they assured me that sometimes they don’t get all the mail back at once, and that my veil should arrive soon.

A week later (today), no veil. At this point, I’m getting very angry (and it probably doesn’t help that I’m in the middle of doing an online defensive driving course for the ticket I got the day I became a bee!), and so I decided to call the post office yet again.

They. Mailed. It. Back.

Yup, my veil is now BACK in California where it started off. So, I emailed the Etsy seller who sold it to me, and she’s now shipping it back, but I get to pay six dollars in shipping AGAIN because the post office effed up.

So yeah. This was basically one big rant, but I like to keep it real, and this is what I’m dealing with right now. I’m officially not a fan of the post office anymore.

Did you have any trouble with shipping stuff during wedding planning?

Oooooooh, I feel your pain. Remember that sash I had that didn’t look right on my dress? I tried to send it back to the seller on etsy but she rejected it because I shipped it from RI (where my dress is) instead of Chicago (where it originally shipped to). She declined the package because she didn’t recognize the address. Mail/shipping/all that stuff is SUCH a bother!

Not yet with wedding planning but oh do I know how the forwarding dance goes. I was so proud of myself for arranging the forwarding a couple of weeks ahead of time for my last move. But my post office decided to forward everything RIGHT AWAY. Then they told me they didn’t. Then they apologized. Then they told me my mail was gone gone gone. It was fabulous really.

All that to say that I feel your pain. And I’m now incredibly grateful that I’m not moving in the midst of wedding planning. You are a better woman than me!

Yikes! At least you were able to sort it all out, and nothing was permanently lost. What a pain in the butt though. :(

That really sucks, but I’m glad that nothing actually got lost in the mail!

The post office is terrible! I live in a very small town of less than 2500 people. I didn’t even file a forwarding request. My Grandpa went to the post office to pick up his mail and casually mentioned to the post master that I would be moving soon since I was getting married. So, without any authorization from me they stopped sending my mail to my address! They sent back an insurance check and a credit card bill. The worst was when they sent back my driver’s license and it was destroyed. So I had to go back down to the DMV and start the process again. Angry doesn’t begin to describe my feelings toward the USPS.

We used the online hold request form to stop deliveries during the honeymoon, which allegedly works 95% of the time. Hello, other 5%. The USPS decided we’d moved without telling them, and returned everything.

Now, keep in mind, this isn’t just wedding stuff. Not only was my birthday was in there, but my dad died as well. So we’ve got wedding cards and gifts, birthday cards and gifts, and condolences cards all going back. Plus, y’know, bills.

We’re not phone people, and everyone knows that and never calls, but we had dozens of messages when we got back. Did we move and forget to tell people? Was it name-change-related? Oh, it was a mess.

Lesson learned: fill out the hold card in person. Convenience be damned!

Ugh. I feel your pain. I’m not a fan of the USPS. They failed to deliver my mail for multiple days starting on the day I was to receive my FI’s wedding ring. Classy.

When I moved out to CA, I shipped a couple boxes media mail. Well packed, etc. Well, the post office managed to tear one of them open and stuff fell out. And clearly not just out of my box, but also out of a few other people’s boxes as well, because when it finally arrived there was stuff that I had put in the box missing and stuff in the box that wasn’t mine at all. Thankfully I had an inventory list and the box had been insured.

On the other hand, getting the post office to HONOR the insurance amount was its own additional headache that involved 5 months of followup phone calls and eventually a threat to take it to one of the local news stations before they fulfilled the claim (which wasn’t even for the full amount the box had been insured for - only the estimate which we had used when deciding how much insurance to pay for of each of the items that was missing or damaged beyond use, which was provided to them). It turns out that they have their own valuation and you better hope that your values agree with theirs or be willing to argue it for the long haul.

No, I don’t really recommend shipping anything via media rate anymore. And I’m not really fond of the post office in general.

Ugh post office! We mailed ourselves a save the date to make sure the postage was enough. I was excited so I sent the rest out the next day. People started getting theirs in a day… it took ours over a week to get to us. Glad I didn’t wait.

aww girl! that sucks!!!
specially because they are the ones that messed up, and u had to pay for it

actually I had a mishap of this kind when I moved from my sis’ to another apartment. .
I did the “forwarding mail” thing and suddenly my sis stopped receiving HER mail (including some important things like checks and bills that only arrive by mail)
Oh! she was super mad :(
We obviously share the same last name, but then makes me wonder: why do they even bother to ask for your first name if they are gonna screw it and move out the whole family anyway?

This is why I haven’t moved in 2 years. I don’t trust the post office (or the other shipping services) not to screw it all up! Too many wedding related things coming in the mail.

I went to our post office to pick up stamps for my STD’s and I asked for 200 $.44 stamps. The guy packaged them up, charged me, and I left. Only to get home and find out that he gave me $.17 stamps…not even a post card takes a $.17 stamp…why would they even have them mixed in??? My FH took them back to the post office and asked to exchange them for a regular sized $.44 stamp… they gave us oversized stamps that dont fit in the space I have available on the envelope… looks like another trip to the post office is in our near future.

not wedding related but I went on vacation for 2 weeks and had the post office hold our mail until I got back. Well when we got back our mail came but nothing from the 2 weeks came until 5 months later! turned out I had a victoria secrets rewards card that expired 2 months ago in that mail pile. So mad.

Ugh…that is beyond annoying….I’m sorry Cardy! I really dislike USPS, because they completely ruined several items I ordered off of Etsy before the wedding. Their excuse? That it wasn’t packaged properly. Um, one of the boxes looked like it had been straight up trampled on and kicked. Grrr…..
