About Mrs. Seashell

Playing By The Rules

August 2nd, 2010 @ 10:58 am by Mrs. Seashell

I have long dreamed of a sparkler exit for our wedding. I simply adore the effect. And the photos. And the whole “send-off” idea.

However, Miss Earrings recently posted about sparklers not being allowed in her neck of the woods. As soon as I read her post I had a sinking thought, or more specifically, “Crappers! Before I order sparklers, I better confirm that they’re allowed.” After a quick e-mail, my hunch was confirmed: no sparklers in the state of Rhode Island. Oh, Rhody, say it ain’t so.

I was CRUSHED. Seriously crushed. This has quite possibly been my single most discouraging wedding-must-have-moment turned disappointment.

I started doing gobs of research on “non-flaming sparklers”, light up wands, and all sorts of alternatives. None of the options were particularly—for lack of a better word—classy. Everything I stumbled upon seemed to belong at a sports arena or a circus. It was not exactly how I wanted to exit our wedding. But then, one day a few weeks ago, I found this:

Erin from blueeyedbride’s ribbon wands. I was getting closer. Then came my “a-ha!” moment. I needed to add something with a little metallic glimmer so they would catch the light. Mr. Seashell and I hit the Home Depot and Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts on Saturday.

Check out this glue gun action. And I call myself a crafting-moron? Ha!

After getting a good amount of hot glue on the end of a dowel, I crumpled a bunch of tinsel to create our  “Sparkle Wands”.

And here they are!

In the end, no, they’re not my beloved sparklers. But, they’re definitely a decent substitute. They’re reasonably sparkly, and I think they’ll make for some fun “send-off shots” as we depart our wedding. For those of you who live in places where sparklers are allowed: I envy you like crazy. Lucky ducks.

I too loved the sparklers, but FI’s cousin had them at her wedding a few years ago. Another bee made “Yay” Flags, which I thought were too cute! We’ll be doing those instead.

BTW- yours look SO cute!

@Hotchili1229: That was Mrs. Potato Chips - another Rhode Island bride! Her flags were adorable. :)

Your sparkle wands look great! RI just changed the law on certain fireworks (last month) and I believe sparklers are now allowed. Either way, your send off will look great!

I was devasted when I found out we couldn’t use sparklers either! I am between your idea and rose petals! I would love to see how you are planning to display them at your reception!

Those are awesome! And probably less scary than running through and arc of sparks….for me anyway…. :)

@Miss Kitty Cat: OH MY GOD. I’m contacting our venue now.
Anyone want to buy some freshly made sparkly wands? ;)

Cool! They look like fireworks on a stick. Definitely a great alternative to sparklers!

You did a great job for an alternative but I live in Newport, RI and sparklers and any firework that does not shoot off from the ground has BEEN PASSED as of July 1st of this year. You can now buy sparklers at Bj’s Wholesale Club and other grocery lilke stores.

Oh very awesome Miss Seashell! I love the wands, they are so cool and peppy too. Really pretty. Hope RI lets you have your sparklers but this a fun alternative.
We are allowed to have sparklers even on the deck of our venue! wow! So we have close to 200. But my FI’s mom wants us to use bubbles too. Won’t that kinda clash with the sparklers?

ooo I’d love a sparkler send off, but seeing as our reception is on a military base, I somehow doubt they’d be ok with it :(

I want sparklers too but won’t be able to use them. I’m hoping to use them the night of our wedding rehearsal before we all head off of the night. I’m doing a BBQ and bonfire on the beach so I think it would be perfect then. I love your idea though! I might have to do that the night of the wedding reception.

I want sparklers too, but when I mentioned it to my FMIL she looked at me like I was nutso and said “what if someone burns your dress.” Also we’re having a lot of kids at our wedding so sparklers are kind of up in the air right now. But I LOVE what you did. However, It seems as though you’re going to have your sparkler love after all. Yay! Could you let us know how much it cost to make and any tidbits you learned along the way?

I wanted to use sparklers so badly (especially since we got married on the 4th of July), but no, our venue was too close to the foothills, where all fireworks are banned. Of course….

Not that I live in RI, but you got me interested in your sparkler laws-do updated us if you’re going to be allowed to use them at your site! I hope they are, for your sake :)
