The Bridesmaid Newsletter

August 3rd, 2010 @ 4:28 pm by Mrs. Plaid

After seeing many other brides write newsletters for their bridesmaids I decided this was a must-do on my to-do list. So, I designed and wrote my first newsletter. It took most of the day, but luckily I had the whole day free to play around with it. I think it came out rather nice.

It seemed important for me to do because all my bridesmaids live far from me and far from each other. It served as a way to keep in touch with the projects I’m working on as well as getting to know each other.

The Bridesmaid Newsletter : wedding austin stationery Slide1 I’ve written two more since then, and plan on writing one more about a month before the wedding.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how I made my newsletter:

  1. Research online for various newsletter templates. I found mine on Microsoft Word templates. (You can just download the template. However, I just used it as a guide and created my own, that way I had more freedom over colors and graphics and such.)
  2. In Microsoft Word, I started playing around with tables. It’s basically a 4-column table with some cells merged together. If you’re not familiar with tables in Word, play around with them a bit before making your newsletter.
  3. Once I created my table structure, I started brainstorming what content I wanted to include in the newsletter. I chose to write bios for my 3 ‘maids, what they’re going to wear, what their jobs are going to be and what projects I’m working on.
  4. I just started typing on each topic. Go back through after you get your thoughts down and edit, elaborate, etc.
  5. Last, I just went in and added flair. I changed fonts, played with colors and added photos and clip art.

All of my maids really enjoyed reading it. I plan on writing a few more before the big day to keep them updated and informed on all my planning and projects. Good luck and happy writing!

Have y’all found ways of keeping your bridesmaids informed as you plan?

Hi. I don’t understand.

If you have only three bridesmaids, wouldn’t it be easier and more personal just to have given them a call? Instead of spending the whole day on microsoft templates, you could have talked to them directly… for a long time no doubt… heard how things are going for them, told them about the other bridesmaids, had real conversation, etc.

This is an honest question, I’m unclear. Is there another purpose for the newsletter? Do you want to document something?

I think it serves as a tool not just for her to communicate with them, but for them to get to know each other as well.

i love this idea! 2 of my BM’s are sisters of the groom, who don’t really know the others all that well. PLUS, since I asked them to be BM’s in person, I love the idea of having some details in writing - in case they forget!

@confused: Of course you can just tell people things over the phone or in person, but this is a fun little newsletter that gives people information and helps get people excited about the wedding. There is just something cute and fun about seeing something put together in a nice little package like this. It is certainly not something you do out of necessity, it is just for fun.

P.S. Good job Miss Plaid! If I had time to do this (my engagement is only 6 months) I would!

overkill

I’m sorry but I’m with confused. I think this is a case of bride gone overboard.

@confused: Hi! It’s really just another extra DIY project I saw that I wanted to take on. It was mostly for fun. But it also did serve as a tool for them to meet each other as they all live in separate states and don’t really know each other. Also, it’s very hard for me to talk to them on the phone on a regular basis since two of them are in different time zones and one is just very busy. We all communicate best by email so I just thought I’d send them this newsletter instead of the standard, less exciting, email. It’s definitely not something that’s necessary. I just had a free day and thought, why not?

@overkill - I actually think it’s a really great idea! I know that I would really appreciate something like this as a bridesmaid - it’s nice to have a handy little reference guide in case you have questions, so you don’t have to constantly call the bride if you forget something! I would have loved something like this in the weddings I have been in!

@Miss Plaid: Great job! I bet your girls loved it! :)

I love, love this idea and plan on doing it myself. Plus, I agree with Miss Cardigan in that it’s good to have all of the details written for you in a handy, dandy newsletter so you can check it when you forget. I know I like to double check information about weddings I’m in without having to call the bride and bug her.

too cute! I love it and agree that it’s way better than a regular email. As Miss Cardigan said it’s also is great as a reference guide. I may send one out with the schedule!

@overkill and confused: Don’t comment if your going to be rude.

@Miss Plaid: very cute! If your bridesmaids like it and you enjoy doing it thats what matters! I think its great!

I love this idea! I have 6 bridesmaid spread over 4 states and this is such a cute, fun extra. I already send them group emails but this is a much better way to do it. It certainly isn’t meant to be a replacement for “real” communication and I think they understand that.

@overkill: what’s unnecessary for some is fun for others! If it’s not your thing then skip the post, don’t post a comment just to be rude
