Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Meet Me In The Middle…

August 3rd, 2010 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Locket

…of our guests’ tables.

Mr. Locket and I have slightly differing views when it comes to what we want in our wedding centerpieces. He loves the look of florals (and I do too), but he doesn’t realize how quickly the cost can grow when you add a dozen roses to each table (and multiply it by 12).

In an effort to avoid flowers and still make a statement, I’ve had visions of tall, branched pieces (pictured below) adorned in jewels and dressed with delicate orchids, but these are not budget friendly either :( .

Since the cost of these lovely dramatic pieces would likely add up (even if I DIY’ed), I’ve decided to look into other options. Options that I hope Mr. Locket will be fond of. Though he liked the tall, branched pieces, he was worried that anything tall would be obstructive to our guests’ views and would act as roadblocks to dinner conversation. I do agree with him on this and am grateful for his insight because I began to realize there were more cons than I had originally anticipated. Looking into other options didn’t seem like such a bad idea.

Option A: Scale down the branches and create “mini” branched centerpieces.

I am in love with this idea because I would get to keep my branches and cut back on the florals all at the same time. Not only is this option cost effective, but it still has the potential of making a great statement.

Option B: Go a different route using wine bottles or jars with simple flowers.

I am smitten with this idea, too, because the wine bottles would definitely tie into the whole vintage vineyard wedding theme (not to mention it’s eco-friendly). I also adore the simplistic and rustic feel the mixed glass jars provide. They make a subtle statement without being too over the top and would be perfect for an outdoor wedding. The only downside is that Mr. Locket really doesn’t get the whole mixed-glass look and doesn’t see the cohesive manner in any way.

Option C: Go for a simple, unique, vintage feel with mixed elements.

This last option is quite interesting. It combines vintage elements with a dash of florals and is a surprise twist to your everyday centerpiece. I admire the glamorous look of the patterned china with the lone rose, and the balancing act that the teapot is playing.

With all of these options out there, I am torn. I adore bits and pieces from each of them and would love to find a way to squish them all into one vintage, rustic, elegant beauty. But with more options in the air, my arch nemesis “INDECISION” is on the attack. How can I make up my mind? Well…I am hoping the mister will help me out and “meet me in the middle.” Separately, neither of us can come to a decision on anything (well, besides getting married), but together with a little thought, we always make it work.

Did you and your FI work together in choosing tablescapes? Was choosing your centerpieces a difficult task? Did you go back and forth between ideas before picking one?

Very interesting ideas! I was also having a lot of trouble with our centerpieces and coincidentally I liked a lot of these ideas too! Especially the wine bottle idea but the scaled down branches look AMAZING too!! Good luck :-)

FH didnt really have any input on anything. I went back and forth a few times until I went out and bought stuff and there was no turning back after that!

I really love the wine bottles too! And the mini branches are my 2nd fav. What about candelabras? I know people who’ve rented them from a party supplier for pretty cheap… you could hang crystals on those too.

I picked our centerpieces, and I’m not even sure FI has seen them yet. We’re doing a resort wedding in MX so I chose to upgrade our florals after looking through tons of pictures of weddings they’ve done in the past. Of course the ones I liked were $$ extra! We’re doing orchids with lots and lots of candles.

I LOVE the wine bottle/little glass look - became obsessed with cobalt blue glass when I started planning my wedding and now I have about 100+ blue or blue/clear glass pieces waiting to be grouped for centerpieces. I think rather than doing flowers I’ll put candles in them, but haven’t decided yet. That’s my vote though!

@misscoffee:
That’s what I’m doing too! Though I’m not sticking to Cobalt and using several different shades of blue (but cobalt is my favorite!)

My fiance loved the idea of the manzanita centerpieces and loved them even more when he saw them in action. While he would prefer to not use florals at all, we compromised and are having half of the tables with florals and half of them without. I would encourage you to go with a couple of your ideas–it can you be able to use a more costly option by not using it for every table and to incorporate more of your ideas.

I can’t say that my FI helped pick out the centerpieces, but I don’t think he was on board until we went to pick out the linens. Then the whole vision must have finally clicked! Now he will go to thrift stores to help me find vases and such!

Love the mini centerpieces with branches! Great compromise, and they still look super cute.

I had lots of tablescapes in mind (manzanita branches being at the top of my list, too!), but Mr. Taco really just signed off on that part rather than actively participating.

With our centerpieces I have flip flopped a million times between your Option A and B. We are still undecided, but I think any of those options will look pretty. Although initially I wanted something on a grand scale like those giant branches with orchids attached, but of course they are too expensive!

I’ve flip flopped a bunch of times too. They’re all beautiful though. I can’t wait to see what you choose.
