Roses for Their Hair

August 3rd, 2010 @ 12:23 pm by Mrs. Earrings

I was bored. So, I made some hair accessories for my bridesmaids!

I started making bits and bobs with du-kit (polymer clay) a few years ago, probably because I never grew out of my mud pie stage. One of my favourite things to do with it is make roses, so when I was playing around a bit with the clay the other day the thought crossed my mind: ‘Hey… we’re having roses in our wedding… Hey I wonder if these roses would look good stuck in the BMs’ hair…’ *drags compliant sister BM over and sticks some in her hair* ‘Hey… they do look good!’

I mixed a very teensy bit of red clay with the “pearl” white colour to create a baby rose pink for some of the roses, and some I left just with the pearl. And for the purple roses (gotta have that purple!) I added a wee bit of blue to the pink mix.

For those who want to know how I made the roses… it is kinda hard to explain but easy to do… like riding a bike (sort of). I just take little pinches of clay, flatten them into “petals”, then roll or curve them a bit and pinch them together at the base (add extra petals in a circular way so they build up in “natural” layers like a real rose would). Hmm. I think I’m actually really bad at explaining this part, but hopefully you can get an idea from the pics.

I made holes in the base of each rose with a needle. Then I baked them (I just followed the directions on the clay packet for this step). Note: I inserted the hair pins in the roses AFTER I baked them. Big. Mistake. After they were baked it was very hard to get the pins through the holes and some of my roses broke *sad face* (a slight downside of these accessories is that they are quite fragile). A much more intelligent idea would be to bake the pins in the roses… this would also have made them more secure afterwards. Hindsight is 20/20.

The last thing I did was seal the roses with some clear nail polish. Some sort of lacquer or varnish may have been better, but the nail polish worked anyway. :)

So what do you think? I hope my girls like them as much as I do!

What’s a completely random DIY project that you just did on a whim?

Beautiful! You should make all different colors and sell them on Etsy. (And mail me some. ;) ) I can’t wait to see them in action!

I may have to try this on a whim! They look great….perhaps sewing them to the pin or glue could have solved the breaking problem.

Since my bouquets are made from the bake-in-the-oven clay, I obviously love these and was trying to do them for my posse.

Sooo cute!! I never know how to put those things in my hair though…they always seem to slide out or down!! Haha I may be a bit hair-styling challenged though!
