It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Keep It Classy

August 3rd, 2010 @ 10:35 am by Mrs. Glasses

I know I’ve talked (and talked and talked) about being a budget bride, but I just have to have chivari chairs. I. HAVE. TO. HAVE. THEM. In black of course, because everything stays on color scheme in this wedding! They are gorgeous. I mean look at them!

My motto for this wedding has been “Keep it classy, dink and flicka!” because I watch way too much The Office and because I think there is a very fine line between a classy backyard wedding and a, um, not so classy backyard wedding.

I mean, this just screams backyard! We want some real elements of a wedding in our not-so-traditional wedding. They are budget breakers for sure at an estimated $8 a chair but I am looking at cheaper solutions to plates and cups to make up for the costs. So as you can tell, I’m trying real hard to justify the cost of these classy chairs. But if it looks like it’s not going to work out even with puppy dog eyes, I might have a Veruca Salt moment over them.

On the other hand, I feel like I’m going crazy because they are just chairs for Pete’s sake. I can’t believe I am asking this, but what are you doing for your chairs? Are there any wedding items that you’ve been obsessing over?

I am a wedding and event planner for a living. So thank GOD that a lot of my vendors are pulling strings for me. I am getting my chiavari chairs for $2.40 per chair including tax and gratuity…….!!!

INSIDER SECRET! Even with my connections, the prices weren’t that low. The original offer was $3.75 per chair and I STILL did not want to do it. So I told them “such and such a company is giving them to me for $2.50 per chair” so they said “we’ll do it for $2.40 per chair” it worked for me because they know that #1 I work for a prominent catering company in the area and we do LOTS of business together. #2 I am the FIRST. WEDDING. EVER. at my venue so they want exposure for future events.

But try it. Tell them you got this offer from this company but you’d rather go with their company, can they match or beat it. They worst thing they can say is no…….. :)

Yes, I know how you feel. The venue we like comes with black metal folding chairs. With the name of the venue written in marker on the back… Not the loveliest. However, I cannot justify renting chairs, since we are spending a little more just to have that spot! Those chairs you want are lovely, but I think the black wood folding chairs people rent are also quite nice and much more affordable. Good luck!

We’re using the chairs at our venue. They’re not bad. Nothing special. And that’s fine. For perspective you might think about what you are going to look back on and care about 5 years from now. I don’t think chairs will be it. What about some nice white wooden folding chairs? Might those be a happy medium between plastic lawn furniture and chiviari?

I so want those chairs too — everything is so expensive and my budget has already been busted — we want them in the natural color since our colors are purple and khaki — I just know we will both work it out so we can have these very classy yet outdoor appropriate chairs!!!!

They’re beautiful, and I’d have them if I didn’t care about a budget, but I can’t justify spending $8 to rent a chair that someone will sit in (and most guests will never notice) when the venue provides neutral comfortable banquet chairs. $8 * 150 guests adds up to way more than I’d spend for chairs. Not for me!

We have the plastic chairs like you posted there that are provided to us by our venue. Meh, I really don’t care for them, but they were free, and I highly doubt any of my guests will be paying that much attention. I might tie some tulle or some ribbon around them to “pretty them up” since chaircovers wouldn’t fit on those.

Beautiful chairs! We’re just going with what the venue has which is wood chairs. It works because it’s outdoors.

@kokuu: I am sure you can make them pretty if you care to, but in the context of a backyard wedding like we are having it’s just too much.

I’m right with you there on the chiviari chairs. I HATE sitting down and having my clothes stick to the cushions on the folding wedding chairs. Eww. But then again, I’m having a June wedding in FL. We priced it out, and because we’d have to rent any chair, you might as well spend 50% more and get chairs you LOVE.

We gave in to the siren song of the Chiavari chairs as well. They are just too pretty!

They are such beautiful chairs! I have been lusting after them since I learned that you got to pick your chairs, though I doubt it will work out for our wedding either. I think as long as I get covers over the chairs I’ll be okay :)

Luckily the chiavari chairs came with our venue, at no extra charge. Honestly, they are nice but not something that I lusted after prior to our wedding. My priorities were more around the live band and open bar. I know brides love chiavari chairs but I just don’t think that guests pay very much attention to the chairs that they are sitting in so don’t stress out too much over them!

why not go with the cheaper white wooden chairs like chelsea clinton had in her wedding?

I hated the chairs at our venue but I couldn’t justify spending $10 per chair. That would have put us at $1500 JUST for chairs that no one will honestly remember. It’s a waste of money darling!

I want chaircovers.. i want them, i want them, i want them! and if i have to i will go Veruca Salt over them!!! lol!

I got a really good quote from a rental place for the covers and sashes and i’m going to forego the candy buffet and just get some relatively inexpensive favors so i can “justify” the expense..

I wanted black chairs for the ceremony - like the white one ones but black. They were $12/chair… But we changed venues and guess what their standard chair was? black wedding chairs!

And I had long given up on chivari chairs for the reception as they were even more than the black ones, but the new venue has them as their standard reception chair as well! New venue=A-MA-ZING!

We’re just using the basic chairs our venue provides. Chairs aren’t the sort of thing that I remember from other people’s weddings and I don’t find them worth it when there is money that we could be spending that would actually improve the wedding for our guests.

You have to rent chairs anyway, I say go for chivari.

I loved these chairs but my venue already provided the white garden chairs for free. I couldn’t justify $1000 vs. $0. But if it was $1000 vs $500 I probably would’ve gone for the chivaris.
