Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Invitation Printing Play

August 3rd, 2010 @ 8:41 am by Mrs. Locket

June was a busy month on the DIY front. Early on I spent a lot of time sewing flowers for my bouquet, but with time slipping away I really needed to work on my invitation design. I know…I know…it was June and nearing the three-month mark (BAD BRIDE!!), and I needed to get those puppies out ASAP! But I had been busy and hadn’t quite figured out how I wanted the final product to look yet. (Plus, I had a plan involving sweatshop-like conditions with family and friends helping me out on an upcoming weekend.)

I initially played with black ink on ivory card stock with a purple backing and created this:

It was nice and all, but it didn’t have the standout factor I was aiming for. I wanted something different from the ordinary and with some color, so I decided to play around with dark paper and gold ink.

YUDU makes a pretty great looking gold ink, but I didn’t want to spend the extra bucks on a trial run, and I found a cheaper alternative in AC Moore. For less than four dollars I found Simply Screen Ink in Gold Dust and couldn’t pass up the deal!

Ink in hand, I was prepared to play with my YUDU until I realized, “Oh crap, I don’t have anymore purple card stock. S#@T!!”

I was ready to postpone the fun until I remembered the leftover construction paper in my craft closet, which gave me the hope to keep on trucking. I trekked on, spread my ink, and passed it through the screen and was very pleased with the results. I successfully printed 10 perfect invites (well, perfect for the imperfect screen) within 10 minutes on various shades of construction paper that I had on hand.

I think the result is pretty stellar, don’t you?

The shimmery gold ink over the dark paper was stunning! It had a great shimmer to it, especially when it hit the light at certain angles.

Now don’t get me wrong—I know that this run is not perfect. The big issue is the screen, and the fact of the matter is that I need to burn a new one with the changes I made to the font, but lazy, procrastinating me hasn’t gotten around to it yet.

To sum things up, I am pleased with the overall look of gold ink over a dark background and am very curious to see what the gold would look like over a deep purple/plum–colored paper. The downside? Mr. Locket does not like the light-on-dark look and thinks it looks like a negative and that it’s too “goth.” He could be right…it might be a bit too dark for a cheery wedding invite (and the groom should have his say). So I am back to the drawing board trying to figure out what will look best and am on a pretty tight time crunch. But hey, I work best under pressure, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. And if all else fails, there is always the print-your-own-invite section at Michael’s, right?

What do you think? Too dark for a wedding invite? When did you ship yours out? Is the three-month mark really necessary if you have already sent STDs?

I think the plum will really punch things up and take away any “goth” feel. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

We sent out save the dates, so we’re mailing at the 2 month mark. A lot of people already booked rooms. I like the gold ink a lot, but can see Mr. Locket thinking it is dark for a wedding, but if your going for the standout factor, these definitely are. I love wedding invites with personality!

Wow! I think it looks better with the gold. Not goth at all but might as well try it with the plum. Seriously, I vote for GOLD! It pops!

I think the gold on a rich plum paper would look great! And you can always brighten up the invite a bit with a lighter colored envelope and RSVP card. I suggest doing a complete mock-up of the whole suite before showing it to Mr. Locket; I bet he’ll change his tune!

@missjenna81: oh how fun! I love my middle name! It was my grandmother’s name :) @SabrinaR424: Mr. L has had it up to here with mock-ups lol! I change my mind constantly and he is always like does it matter what I say…you will have a new one in another day. We did come up with a resolve that we both love and I can’t wait to show them off!

Miss Locket — I always heard that they should be sent TWO months out, not three. In fact, I’ve gotten several wedding invites this summer and all of them followed the 2-month rule, and we are too — we’re sending ours tomorrow for our early October wedding. So don’t worry! You have another month of cushion. :)

As for the design, I’m with your groom — I think a cheery design like yours would look better on a lighter background. But that’s just my preference, I’ve never been big on the light-on-dark invite look. Could you compromise and have light-on-dark envelopes with dark-on-light invites inside?

*For a visual, I was thinking of Miss Octopus and her invites — they’re light on the inside but a beautiful rich chocolate on the outside with gold lettering.

I would def. try it on the plum cardstock to see what it will actually look like and maybe find a coordinating gold envelope so that everything Mr. Locket is seeing isnt dark - def. not goth & I love it!

I like the first invite photo, on the light background, actually. But I guess I’m alone on that! And I have always heard 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding.

I really like the contrast of light ink on dark paper! Gives me some good ideas actually.. :-)

Loving the gold on the dark paper. Perhaps a lighter shade of purple would look good, this way it keeps from looking too dark (although I really liked the second mock up).

Maybe just try switching the ink and paper colors: dark plum ink on gold paper. That would have a much lighter feel but look so luxurious! (I think, anyway, as the picture is only in my head.) :) Either way, I love the design!

I like Katie’s idea and the idea of doing the invites like Miss Octopus.

maybe you could print it in plum on gold paper? but then you might want to make the font much thicker/simpler because I always think reading thin/fancy fonts on shimmery paper is a bit difficult
