Mrs. Taco's Picture
Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.
About Mrs. Taco

SF Turned into the Mediterranean

August 4th, 2010 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Taco

Taco’s note: we’re getting down to the wire, and, like many of the now-Mrs. bees and August month twins, I’ve been mired in the details of scheduling and loose-end-tying two weeks out. Subsequently, I started forgetting the fun stuff. I couldn’t let August 14 sneak up on me (which it is TOTALLY doing) before doing a bridal-shower recap for y’alls.

San Francisco, with its Mediterranean climate and gaggles of bougainvillea bushes, turned into the real Mediterranean for a few hours. My bridal shower was Mediterranean-themed to go with our honeymoon to Italy, Greece, and Egypt. We registered solely for honeymoon items, so this was a great idea for a party, thrown by the Cinco Taco BMs. Most of the food was either Italian or Greek in origin, and people were encouraged to bring something the Tacos could use on their honeymoon.

It was the best damned shower this side of the Atlantic! My enthusiasm surely means that it was planned with my tastes and likes in mind: the mark of an excellent partay. Kudos galore to shower-leader BM Jillian.

Jillian had a great idea for favors: monogrammed luggage tags, further personalized with the gals’ names and addresses. Clever, as she already had everyones’ names and addresses for the invitations. The globe actually lives there all the time, it wasn’t shower decor :)

Adorbs. She made a handmade bon voyage banner. We kept it up for a while because we liked it so much and are dying for this vacay.

And yes, everything is black-and-white! The decor, favors, and everyone’s outfits fit the theme. I was excited to see everyone participating.

Our newest wall decoration; these were the invitations (from Etsy, I heard); each card is a sketch of Rome, Athens, and Cairo. Part of my shower present was the San Francisco set of cards.

Games!

Those handmade buttons in the pic above all have letters on them. Everyone got one that corresponded to their first initial, and there were some extras on there for good measure. Then we played Scrabble; we looked around the room and made words based on everyone’s letter, plus those on the board. The words had to be something that would be at the wedding, and I had veto power. Meaning, if someone made the word SPAM, then I could veto that one since there wouldn’t be any at the wedding. (I know, try to contain your disappointment.)

Funny: BM April correctly noted that no one made a word out of my name.

A roomful of ladies playing another game. This one was a guesser, in which people determined where in the world us Tacos were, based on some clues about these places’ geographic location. They were all places on our itinerary, roughly sketched out on the Honeyfund site. Jillian’s husband helped put this one together; what a guy!

Opening presents! Many of the presents were donations to our Honeyfund, and the gals really went all out with their cute cards. I also got a Lolita decanter to add to my collection, and some wine to go with it. Nothing preps a gal for a trip to Italy like drinking some vino.

No party is complete unless someone wears some of the gift garnish. That’s my delicious red-velvet cake on the table. Next to the COLD DRINKS container was a delicious box of sangria. I tore the box open a few days later looking for leftovers.

All these pre-wedding events were really touching. People went far out of their way to plan and host a party for me, and I’m incredibly grateful for they took the time and effort to do so. Throughout all this, I think the best feeling is being proven over and over again that you have a stellar support system.

What’s been made clearer for you in the party-heavy, pre-wedding madness?

My girls informed me about a week ago that our honeymoon was going to be my shower theme as well!! We are also conincidentally registered at honeyfund, and will be taking a cruise through the Panama Canal. Im super excited to see what they come up with. Your shower looks fantastic, and how great to know your ladies took such great time and effort to put together a wonderful event for you! Congrats! I hope you dont get too crazy in the days before your wedding. :)
