Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.

Contagious Habits Are Awesome

August 4th, 2010 @ 3:52 pm by Ms Seahorse

A little back story for you: we’re leaving this morning for a two day camping trip in upstate New York with some friends of mine, and I don’t think I could be more excited. I spent a lot of time in the Hudson Valley, moving there for college, staying for summers, and then sticking around after college. I loved my little city and the surrounding towns and the fact that you could be in the city, ride your bicycle for ten minutes, and find a nice cornfield, maybe a herd of sheep and a horse. Where else can you get that kind of variety?

Anyway, we’re packing last night – frantically, because we want to leave at a reasonable hour and we have a ton of stuff to do in the morning – and Fancee stops and says, “You know, back in my single boring days, I would have been packed for this trip two days ago.” Then she sort of shrugged and sighed and went back to packing.

That’s one of the things of relationships, I guess. Why doesn’t anyone tell you how bad they are for you? You get happy, then you gain weight and pack at the last minute. We had no warning!

Contagious Habits Are Awesome : wedding boston relationships 11 1

ah! no one warned me this stuff was contagious!

The person I dated in college was chronically late for everything. Everything, you guys. If you said 9, she’d be there between 9:15 and 9:30. Even classes. And I was just shocked by this. You can’t be late for classes! They’re classes! But then I started to see it… she never missed anything. If anything she missed the boring first fifteen minutes, and if they were important fifteen minutes then someone would fill her in. And so somewhere along the line I stopped leaving 15 minutes early for a class that was 5 minutes away, because an extra fifteen minutes of naptime after getting up for rowing was vital. And everything was fine! The world did not end, I graduated, etc.

Here’s part of the problem with this approach in the real world, though: people don’t like when you’re late. Um, one time we thought we were invited to a New Year’s Eve party and we took our time getting there – we got there an hour or two after it started. Haha, funny story – it was a dinner party. Like, we got there an hour or more after dinner was supposed to start. And they waited for us. It was not okay, you guys. I’m sure there have been other times, too.

Fancee, tell us how you feel about bad habits you pick up in relationships. Don’t hold back, tell us how you REALLY feel!

So it’s both of us now. We’ve sucked up the being late habit and I’m not sure we’ll be able to shake it anytime soon, though we’re working towards it and we’re a little more frantic than usual while trying to get to New York on time. Not so frantic that I’m not up writing this when I should be packing.

Do you have bad habits that you’ve picked up from your relationships that have stuck?

I have the exact same thing with last minute packing. I always used to be packed days ahead. Now, night before all the way. And lateness too really.

Ahhh this is so true. Mr. Knitting sometimes tunes out if people are boring him and now I’ve started doing that too.

I’m chronically late as well. It seems like even when I try extra hard to be on time or even early, I’m still late. I know this makes people mad, so I’m trying to fix it. And, yes, this totally rubbed off on my FI too.

Well, McGroom watches tons of tv now when he lived without a tv for years, so I’m the bad influence. Oops!

My FI and every member of his family are chronically late. I refuse to let this spread to me. I make it really, really clear to them when it is important to be on time, and if they still aren’t I have learned to simply leave without them (*ahem* sister-in-law 15 minutes late to my dress fitting appointment). It’s a very insulting thing to my family members to have someone be late - disrespect for other people’s time and all that….so we’ll see how the timing of the wedding ceremony goes!

Oh man, this is so true! Luckily, we both like to be early for everything so we haven’t had that particular problem! :)

Our kitchen would not be nearly as unkempt if I hadn’t been influenced by my FI. I’ve slowly gotten to get used to more and more clutter. And then I’ll realize how bad it is and I freak!

I was sleeping from 10pm to 6:30am, then working out for an hour before work. This was unnatural for me, too! I’m NOT a morning person AT ALL, so this had taken years of work and conditioning.

I think we’d been dating for all of a month when I was back to dragging myself to bed between midnight and 1, and crawling back out just in time to drive to work. Gee, thanks, hon.

Hitting the snooze button! When I was single and even in previous realtionships, as soon as the alarm went off, I was awake! Mr. Smith, on the other hand always hits the snooze button. Multiple times. After two years of living together, even though we wake up for work at different times, I have picked up this habit. I wish I could go back to my waking up right away days! I find that hitting the snooze makes me more tired!

I am on time almost always… unless I’m going to an airport. They are black holes of lateness for me and I am taking the fiance down with me. It’s a bad bad business over here.

Yeah, I’m usually running late too, but usually because of traffic! Mr. Cola is usually on time though, but we definitely do enable each other when it comes to being lazy about cleaning our house!

I’ve picked up one of his good habits, actually — I’m the messy one in our relationship, and around him I’m much tidier. But I don’t know if it’s because I picked it up from him, or because I’m embarrassed about my messiness so I just work extra hard when he’s around! (Actually, more likely the latter… since he’s on a year-long overseas assignment, and I’ve relapsed into my messy ways). Oh, I do eat worse when he’s around, though, which is dangerous because HE doesn’t gain weight from eating donuts and Fanta, but I sure do!

PS You gals crack me up! Keep those hilarious photos comin’!
