Shoes… Yuck!

August 4th, 2010 @ 9:07 am by Mrs. Glasses

Shoes are the bane of my existence. They really are. If I had my way, we’d all be walking around barefoot. I hate socks, too, but I guess that’s really a story for another time.

I think I hate shoes so much because they’ve caused so much trouble in my life. A lot of injuries I’ve had are related to not wearing proper footwear. The most recent of these incidents was actually last December, right before Mr. Glasses and I went on our big trip to England. I was inebriated—that’s putting it gently—and in heels, dancing to a song that obviously got me too excited because I fell over and broke my foot. Since then, I’ve been cautious of high heels, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to put a pair on yet. As I’ve mentioned, I’m not really keen on any shoes in the first place. I only go shoe shopping when I’ve worn out a pair because I absolutely hate picking out, trying on, and buying shoes (I don’t know why).

Where does that leave me with my shoes the day of our ceremony? Our backyard isn’t paved—it’s all grass and dirt—so that leaves dreaded heels out of the question. I need something that can get dirty while being comfortable and cute.

Juuuust kidding. I’m a short-dress bride, so I’ll need some non-heel, comfortable shoes with style. Height makes me feel a little sexy, so I don’t wanna do flats; this leaves me with wedges!

I’ve never owned or even stepped foot in a pair of wedges, but as I was browsing online I noticed most wedges are “woodeny” or “corky,” and with a bridal gown, well, in the words of my father: “that just don’t go.” This immediately lowered the possibility pool, which is a good thing, IMO. Anything to get this process over and done with as quick as possible!

All of these options are around $100! Since I am wary about online shopping (my right foot is freakishly bigger than my left—I need to try shoes on!), these will serve as inspiration for the real thing, like much of what I’ve blogged about so far.

Even though my shoes will be on display, they are the lowest priority on my list for my wedding day look. I actually care more about what Mr. G wears on his feet!

So help a bee out! Give me your top tips for finding the perfect wedding-day shoes. What are you going with? Pumps, wedges, Converse, heels?

I bought wedges at a local store on sale for $12. They’re brown - that sounds ugly to have brown wedding shoes but they do match my color scheme - they’re pretty cute and I’ve decided to dress them up with ivory flower shoe clips I got off Etsy for $11. I have wide feet that makes shoe shopping impossible. I didn’t want to spend a lot either. And I can wear my shoes again, so it’s win-win!

I’ve had my fun or lack thereof on the shoe front…I finally found a pair, but I am not 100% thrilled with them…I am thinking it won’t matter so much since they will be buried under my dress.

Hee! My left is bigger than my right! We’d be perfect together… no wasted shoes! :P

Granted, I have shoes, but I really want to walk barefoot. Why not, as Nike says, just do it?

I like the red ones…then again, I may just be drawn to bright colors. :)

I know you’re wary of shopping online for shoes, but Zappos.com and ShoeBuy.com offer free shipping & free Returns shipping (!). Look for coupon codes online for a better deal; I got $80 shoes on ShoeBuy for $50, including tax. Good luck with your search!

I am a “two-shoe” bride, after compromising with my mom. She HATES the replica ruby slippers (my name is Dorothy, so how could I resist?) I purchased for my wedding, so I will be wearing those at the reception when I change into my shorter, simpler reception dress. For the ceremony, I picked out shoes from both Zappos and ShoeBuy. Both are sitting in my bedroom, waiting for me to decide on which I love more, once I practice walking in them.
My contenders: Coloriffics “Flower” and Coloriffics “Tango Too”

I wish I could go barefoot or wear my trusty Rainbow flipflops, but I realize that can’t happen. I really like the first pair and the red pair of wedges. I definitely think a wedge is the way to be dressy, yet stable.

I found a pair of low (2 inches or lower) wedge heels from Bandolino, and they’re perfect. Plus I found them at Marshalls for $35, whereas they were $75 online! I did go up half a size though, because I need more room in heels so my feet aren’t pinched!

Haha OMG I had no idea so many people like to go barefoot or wear flip flops all the time. I always think I’m crazy and then I get awesome comments!

@October4040: I wish I could find $12 wedges I like! For a girl that doesn’t like shoes, I’m surprised at my choices. I’ve never had a $100 pair of shoes ever!

@mak418: Let’s switch shoes!

@kitchenkoala: Free shipping and free returns sounds good. I’ll check ‘em out! Muchos gracias!

@Miss Knitting: We have the same IRL first name too. Oooooo weeeeeeeee oooooooo……

@Violachap: Show me please..

I feel the same way and that’s why I can’t be bothered to shop for them so I found these and love them:

my bridesmaids are wearing them too… I know that’s a little strange but we will all be comfy and that’s all I care about!

I loooove the red ones. I second the zappos recommendation. They are great because you can sort by shoe style as well which lets you narrow down the wedges and you have up to a year to return any shoes you don’t like!

Try Zappos but I can relate- I’m definitely a need to try them on girl so the thought of ordering online can be scary but with a deal like that why not? Just pick something that’s comfortable and you like, that’s all that matters!

I really like the first black ones you posted. Have you tried shoe shopping in Japan? If you are the right size I’m sure you can find something in a store that you like and then you can have cute Japanese shoes. haha I guess you could also get those Japanese platform flip flops that are made for yukatas and be comfy without looking like you are wearing flip flops because you can just tell people it is cultural dress. dsw.com tends to have a good selection but the website can be slow IMO.

Thank God I’m not the only one! Ugh, I am so dreading trying to pick out shoes.

Just fyi though, wedges are not much easier to walk in than heels, at least high ones.
