I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!

Plates!

August 5th, 2010 @ 10:41 am by Mrs. Glasses

…possible the most boring wedding topic, but one that must inevitably be tackled. Chairs! Also a very enthralling topic. I’ve gotta have the chiavari chairs, but being a budget bride, that means something’s gotta give! A 5K budget is about give and take. If I want to spend $500 on chairs, I’ve gotta cut costs somewhere else. So what goes? The biggest cost for a backyard wedding is rentals, and I think the least design-oriented element of this wedding will be the plates. I don’t believe we’ll be having a plated dinner; it’ll probably be serve-yourself buffet style, which means the ugly paper plates don’t have to be on the table from the get-go and can be disposed of quickly when dinner is over. Of course, I don’t want use just any old plates from the dollar store. Here are some options for those thinking of going the paper plate way.

These are VeneerWare plates, made from highly sustainable organic bamboo from China. The company that makes them, Bambu, ensures that their manufacturers are committed to healthy environmental practices and fair labor standards. They are attractive but slightly pricey at 50 plates for $40. On the plus side, they are sturdy and biodegradable. Bambu also makes forks and knives.

Also attractive are these VerTerra plates. They are made of fallen leaves and biodegrade in a compost in two months. They are also fairly made in India. They are even pricier, though, at $71.88 for 48.

These are a little less attractive and a little more two-year-old’s birthday party, BUT they are also ethically made. They are made with sugar-cane fiber and again, biodegradable. They are the cheapest biodegradable, ethically made option at a whopping $6.50 for 50.

I haven’t found a happy medium yet, so I’m on the hunt for attractive, cheap plate options. If you’ve got any recommendations I’d love to hear them. Did you have to decide on plates? What did you go for?

I love the first option, but think the third could be made to look better with some cute napkins and the chairs. Sometimes one thing may seem like a big deal, but when everything is pulled together, somethings pull up the attractiveness of others. Here’s my example: sometimes an unattractive guy at first becomes attractive when he shows how funny he is. Make sense?

We used bamboo plates and bought them here for a little less than 40 bucks for 50 plates:

Are you sure that buying those plates is going to be cheaper?

I considered the same plates you are, but then I checked out the cost of rentals. I have plate rentals priced at $.29 a plate which equals $21.75 in the end for 75 dinner plates. 75 dinner plates and 75 dessert plates are totaling $43.50 - much less than the cost of buying the biodegradable paper plates.

I agree with Future McBride. You can definitely dress up plates you find in your budget.

We decided to keep costs down and forgo the sit down dinner, and had white gloved servers and stationary food but did like horderves( spelling) and had all real dishes and glasses. Our ceremony was 7pm and outside for 85 guests and was under $3000 for the food/dishes.

I am looking into the same plates! They are a tad bit expensive though, especially considering renting them is a lot cheaper, but with a lot of rental companies, you have to rinse them off, worry about breaking them, etc. So I think renting would be more trouble than using disposable…IMO

I would go with your cheapest option and just have cute napkins, chairs, etc.

That’s my plan anyway! People won’t remember the plates (I need to remind myself that not everyone will pay attention to every little detail like a bride would)

Good luck!

I’m using the VerTerra plates for my wedding and found them for much cheaper on Amazon.com. They are gorgeous! They each look like individual pieces of carved wood and we’ve tested them and they hold up beautifully. The pictures don’t do them justice.

While plain white catering plates might be a bit cheaper, for me this was a way to accomplish a unique look on a budget. Also, as a plus, because my caterer was so thrilled she didn’t have to wash dishes, which she normally hires a seperate person to do, she threw in a few extras/upgrades on our menu. Score!

I would consider renting regular china from a rental company. It seems like it would be much cheaper than purchasing the disposable plates. Yes, you may have to rinse them off once your done, but since you are already in the backyard just lay them on the ground and hose them off. :)

All of the rental companies I’ve talked to say you don’t have to wash the plates. They give you plastic containers to send them back in and you just stack them in there after they’re used.

Even if you get plain dishes dress them up with the rest of the table, good luck with your search :-)

Have you considered buying the cheapest plates Ikea has to offer and then donating them to goodwill afterward, for a nice tax deduction? Might be cheaper than renting and about the same as those expensive disposable plates.

To sum up and reply to most comments: I have since found an L.A. party rental company that offers rental plates for cheaper than sustainable, disposable plates. However, as many of you have said, the look of the plates is interesting and would add a certain something to the party. The rental company has informed me that their plates need to be rinsed gently and then packed away in a box so that they can be deep cleaned by the company - definitely more work than the disposable plates!

I bought my “disposable” plates- $100 for 12 10.75″ thick white plastic sqaure plates that are dishwasher and microwave safe! I also got matching 6.5″ app/dessert plates 240 for $69.

Could you get the affordable white plates but jazz them up by say, stamping your monogram / design on them?
