Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Paper and the YUDU

August 5th, 2010 @ 1:33 pm by Mrs. Locket

Yudu is an unruly beast!

There I said it…I love my YUDU, but I am frustrated with it right now. It’s not delivering the fine, crisp print I had been hoping for (like the Gocco), and I am skeptical of whether or not I will be able to accomplish the look I had imagined.

Overall, I’ve been fairly pleased with the results I have gotten with my unfixed screen, but the mister hasn’t been as impressed. Though he thinks the prints are OK, he doesn’t think they are great because they aren’t as clean and clear as he has seen in pro invites. And, I have to agree with him.

I’ve been fooling myself into thinking that they rock because I don’t do well with failure (or criticism). So I’ve played with different paper and different inks to see if I can get him to change his mind (or to see if I can change my mind), but what happened instead is that I’ve solidified the idea of “I don’t like these invites anymore” into my head.

Evidence––said invite prints taunting me with their imperfection:

…and a closer shot of the details:

All in all, I think the repeated print process has left me wondering what they could be if I changed up my methods. Yes, I can play with the design to change the font and burn a new screen to see if it solves the clean print issue, but would that really help my “I don’t like my invites anymore” conundrum?

The truth is it won’t…I don’t like my design anymore, and it’s not because of the YUDU. It’s simply because I have outgrown it and am tired of the layout. It just doesn’t sit right, and something about it screams DIY to the max; and that’s not what I want. So there you have it…this crazy bride (with dwindling time) has made changes to her invite design. Changes that will be final.

So what have I decided? I’ve changed up the layout a bit and added a new floral design, and I plan to use my YUDU to print the flowers but not the text. As you can see in the images above and the one below, the floral illustration prints pretty well, and it does come out clean and clear.

My plan was to get at it and plug away every single day so I could get these guys in the mail by July 25! I was confident that I would be able to get them finished and did end up a frazzled mess by the time they were done, but in the end I think it was worth the effort. The Lockets’ invites are now in the mail, and they are pretty rocking!

Have you made any serious last-minute changes to your invite design? Are you rushing to get them out? How soon before your wedding did/will you send yours?

I love your invites and think you did an amazing job; however, bride brain gets us all.

I redesigned my invites 12 times. But that’s what happens when it’s what you do for a living and you’re a perfectionist and you want everyone to like them lol. Luckily I started last year working on the design. They are now printed and I’ve been working on cutting them out and adhering them the to pocketfold every night. My goal is to get them out by August 20th… we’ll see.

We haven’t officially started the invite process (we’re not getting married until July 2011) but we are working with an art student at the college where my fiance works & after just a few convos with him about the invites I’ve already had to change my vision- before even trying anything! Just seems to be a part of the planning biz

ok first off, I love those invites, I think they look really great! Secondly, I went through a huge invite identity crisis. I thought I wanted something really luxe looking, with all these metallic papers and/or inks, etc etc. I ordered soo many samples! But then one day, I was just “over” it. I was tired of finding something I was happy with AND could afford. So i found an online website that offered a very traditional invite, something classic and plain (I am NOT a traditional person) and just ordered it, as a HUGE savings (100 invites, RSVP cards, and accommodations cards, preprinted return address, all for under $200). I decided there were other things that I cared to spend more time on. They only get thrown away anyway (is what I thought).

I love your invites and think they’re beautiful! The layout is great, and the flowers are awesome. Even if they look DIY (not a bad thing), they don’t look cheap or badly done. My favorite is the brown paper with the gold ink. I think you should just sit down and push them all out, and then you will stop worrying about them.

I had our invites printed, and honestly, I’m not really in love with the colors or designs. But I also know that probably no one but my mom and my sister will hang onto them as keepsakes, so the important thing is getting the info out to people in a clear manner.

Love the flowers! For real, we all get this way- Mr P was very particular about our printed items which caused a lot of redesign so I feel ya.

Ah . . . sorry you became tired of the design. I think the invites look great though. What’s happening with the colors of the paper?? They’re all lovely.

I sorta did the same thing with the gocco… Well I mulled over printing them with the gocco for 3 months before determining that because my text was going to be so tiny that there would be a greater chance of it not printing right. I ended up just doing my illustrations with it and it turned out amazing!

After it’s all said and done…it doesn’t have to be all screen printed. =) All guests who aren’t crazy artistic will LoVe it all the same. At least mine did.

Ps… mine went out just under the 2 month mark. And after I sealed them I realized I had the deadline for RSVPing set 2 weeks away from the mailing day bc I originally wanted to mail at 3 mo as we had no STDs. Ooopss!

I still really like your invites. Maybe its because you’ve been around them a lot? Well, let’s see if you can come up with something even more amazing!

I feel your pain. The Yudu just isn’t cut out for fine text. Images look great, fonts, eh, not so much. I’m currently burnt out on it after fighting it so much. I printed close to 1000 tshirts over its lifetime, so I don’t feel so bad. Reading your posts has inspired me to break it out again, though!

I really like the look of your invite! I’m not in a time crunch yet but after a few months of planning out my DIY invites I found out that I wasn’t going to be able to use my graphic. That sent me searching for a new one and I have ended up re-designing them. In the end I like the new design better than the original. It was hard to let go of that original idea at first though.

I’m curious about using the yudu for some fine text on a project. I’m curious—when you were working on this project were you using the 220 fine mesh screen for paper, or the 110 mesh screen that comes with the machine?

@chris: this was using the 220 mesh screen.
