Where’s Your Veil?

August 5th, 2010 @ 4:11 pm by Mrs. Seashell

When Bridesmaid Carrie got married a few years ago my Grandmother was unable to attend the wedding. Much of the event was outdoors and with all the uneven surfaces, and it just wasn’t ideal for my often unsteady Granny. However, she wanted to catch a glimpse of Carrie and me all dressed up before heading to the church, so she swung by Carrie’s house before we departed and got the chance to ogle over how beautiful we looked. She wished Carrie well and sent us off with lipstick kisses on our cheeks. Then, just as she was pulling away, she rolled down her car window and yelled to Carrie (in her Rhode Island accent), “Where’s your veil?”

Oh, Granny, subtlety isn’t your strong suit. Carrie sweetly explained that not all brides wear veils these days.

This has become a classic Grandma wedding story. Every now and then we just randomly yell, “Where’s your veil?” in a loud Rhode Island accent when referring to Carrie’s wedding. Maybe you had to be there. Anywhoo…

I will be wearing Mama Seashell’s veil on our wedding day.

Unfortunately, after 35 years in storage it’s looking a little rough.

When I was in Providence a few months ago I tried to help it out a bit. Poor thing.

After patiently running through the layers with my hair straightener on the lowest setting, it seemed to come to life quite a bit.

I love the idea of wearing this meaningful piece as I say “I do” to Mr. Seashell. I also plan to make it a little bit my own. Instead of keeping the wreath on top I’m going to attach the tulle to a clip like the one below. In fact, I should probably order the exact clip below, seeing as time is a-tickin’.

I’m eager to see how it turns out! Are you restoring any family heirlooms?

Miss Seashell,
I just want you to know that you are one of my favorite current bees… I love all your posts! And even though I don’t know your family, I was still laughing at “Where’s your veil?”. Made me think of the old “Where’s the beef?” lady.

My grandmother is bringing me her veil and my mother’s veil next week when we’re on vacation - I can’t wait to figure out how to incorporate them into what I’m wearing!

LOL! Your grandma is hilarious! I’m one of those people who likes those inside jokes. But I think you did a great job on bringing the veil back to life.

I had thought about using my mom’s veil also, but it was horribly yellowed due to age. I am going to use a small lace piece from the trim of her veil, dye it blue and pin it in my dress. :)

I love how when you get old, you get to say ANYTHING you want. That veil story is priceless.

Miss Seashell!
I am also wearing my Mom’s veil. Mine was also looking a little rough, so my grandmother added some beating and did some magical steaming. It looks as good as new!

So jealous! I was hoping someone in the family would have something meaningful I could use on my day, but it ends up nobody really did the whole ‘wedding’ thing previously. I guess it’s going to be up to me to pass it down!

I wish I could have wore my mom’s veil, but sadly she lent it to another family member for their wedding and it was never returned. My mom did buy my veil, so there’s a little connection.

love it! I would have loved to wear my mom’s veil- but it yellowed with age and she tossed it years ago. Smarty there using the hair straightener!

That is such a cool idea! I don’t have anything like this to use but we did get my fiancee’s late grandma’s silverware which was neat since he never got to meet her

Seashell! Your posts just crack me up! i love it! oh as a thought, you should just hand wash the veil in the sink with some Woolite (made for delicate fabrics) it will get any dust and dirt out and get rid of the wrinkles then just fan the layers out to dry or (if you have nother better to do like me) you can blow dry it with your hairdryer.
