Something Old

August 5th, 2010 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Starfish

I’ve been debating on what to use for the whole, “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”.

I originally planned to use my engagement ring as my something old,. The diamond is from FMIL Starfish’s engagement ring, so I thought I had my “something old” all set.

Or, in the past, brides wore the wedding gown belonging to a grandmother or mother. So, this really knocked out the two options for my something olds from Mr. Starfish’s side of the family, as it’s supposed to be representing the bride’s family and the past.

I’ve been gifted two sentimental heirlooms from my future family, but both struck out as my “something old”. So, it’s back to the drawing board.

What are you using as your “something old”? Did you follow the tradition of using something from the bride’s past, or just go with something that is generally “old”?

your cake cutter can be one of your “something old”s, but have something else that’s on you as you walk down the aisle. i’m planning on wearing pins from each of my late grandmothers, either hidden under my dress, or on the ribbons on my bouquet. my mom also wants me to wear the pink shoes she wore at her wedding, but she always talks about how uncomfortable they were, so i might pass.

I’m planning on attaching a brooch from my grandmother on my bouquet for my something old.

I pinned my grandma’s wedding ring into my dress. It was small so did not fit me but was close to my heart during the entire night :)

I guess I have 2 at least, I’m wearing my Nan’s pearls (my dad’s mother who passed away when I was 10) And they aren’t even real, I’m pretty sure they’re plastic! But I don’t care. Also I’ll be carrying her bible down the aisle, but that’s my something borrowed b/c my Aunt is lending it to me. My other something old is my stuffed bunny my dad gave me when I was 7. He’ll be used in leiu of a ring bearer pillow. (Not before he makes a visit to a stuffed animal hospital though, sshh don’t tell him…)

my grandmother gave me her garter to wear. it had a penny in it from the year she married my grandfather, a penny from the year my parents were married, and i’m going to add a 2010 penny. probably should start looking for the penny, only a few more weeks to go!

I love the penny idea! I’m wearing a ring that my grandfather gave my grandmother for my something old and it also happens to be blue!
But if it was something from my groom’s side I wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s your wedding do what feels right to you!

I don’t think I’ll be doing the something tradition, but your something old is so sweet!

Two things: my great-great grandma’s brooch (mom’s side) will be fastened to my ribbon wrapped bouquet. I will also wear my grandma’s (mom’s side, again) engagement ring and wedding ring. My grandma passed away before I was born, but my grandpa will be there.

I am making my flower for my hair from my moms veil from her wedding to my dad so that is my something old. As for the something new, something borrowed, and something blue… At a loss…

My grandmother wore a bluebird pin (she had a thing for bluebirds) it is old and blue. I will be fastening it to the inside of my dress.

That’s great! I don’t think I’ll be doing the “somethings” (gasp, I know). But, I still love all the things everyone comes up with!

I have a ring my grandfather bought me a few years before he passed away that I never take off and plan on wearing, does that count for something old? I’m stumped too…
