Boxed Wine

August 6th, 2010 @ 9:37 am by Mrs. Husky

A while back, I mentioned our wine box ritual that we would be having in lieu of the Unity Candle/Sand Ceremony. I thought now would be a good time to talk about our wine that will go inside.

Allow me to start from the beginning:

Last year, Mr. Husky and I joined a CSA. I could fill the entire post with both praise and complaint about our experience, but I will instead just mention one of the highlights. At the end of the growing season, we were gifted with a wonderful bottle of wine. We discovered the blend came from a “custom-crush facility” about an hour north of us. Not only do they provide the wine for the CSA, but they offer something a little bit unusual: custom wines.

We scheduled a tasting and spent a couple of hours deciding what we liked. Our winemaker was extremely patient with us, as we’d never participated in a tasting before. Ultimately we settled on a batch of Amarone, which is currently being fermented in their local facility. Once it is ready, Mr. Husky and I will return to bottle and label our own wine! We can even design the labels we want to use.

Our wine plan changed just a bit from what we had originally envisioned. Most commercial wines contain preservatives to keep the wine fresh for many years. The wine we have chosen does not—at most, it will stay fresh for three to five years. This means our idea of keeping the bottle in the box until our, say, 15th anniversary just isn’t practical. Instead, we will place a bottle in the box, to be opened on our first anniversary. At that time, it will be replaced by the next batch! So instead of limiting our wine-making activities to one time, pre-wedding, we plan to make it an annual tradition.

Did you discover anything during the planning stage that can become a special tradition?

Yeah, how what is this place? McGroom and I love wine. Picking wine has been the best part of the wedding.

Amarone is one of my FAVORITE wines…. my SO and I are going to Europe in September and specifically planned 2 days in the Valpolicella wine region outside of Verona, just to visit vineyards and taste Valpolicella/Amarone wine. YUM

Ok, I have to know! What facility are you talking about. We live in Fort Collins and we’re having our wine made at Vintages. I was thinking that might be it because you said an hour north of you. We ALMOST got the Amarone. It was fantastic! We decided to go with Malbec (because my dad is Argentinian) and a Sauvignon Blanc from NZ (because my FI is a kiwi). Yay for personal wine!

@denverbirdlet: and @mtnshine: We are getting it from Vintages! I actually just emailed them this morning to find out when our wine will be ready. So excited to go back and bottle it! We *almost* went with the Malbec too!

@mcnetn3: Wow, that sounds wonderful!

Winemaking is so much fun! We made two cases of wine for our wedding with the help of a local winemaker and are going back to label and bottle tomorrow. I think it’s going to be a very special touch.
