I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! On the Road Again

August 6th, 2010 @ 5:58 pm by Mrs. Sand Dollar

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Mr. SD and me! Our Waco lease ran out, which meant it was time for me to hustle on down to the house we’ll be living in once he graduates. We’ve spent the last six months spending weekends and vacations fixing up his grandma’s house. And I would say the work has been worth it! It was our first big project as a couple, and we’ve come to head on a few issues about how we work together and what processes we use. Our work styles are completely different. But we’ve learned to work together, and look how far we’ve come!

After

I could go on forever with before and afters—it’s been a complete transformation. His grandmother had the house built and has lived in it all her life, and by this point it was in dire need of some major updating. It’s so much fun to take on a project like this as a couple. It’s also been a great experience to get to know each other better and begin to work out some issues. For one, I am an obsessive planner. I have to-do lists, supply lists, and schedules. Mr. SD is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kinda guy. This has led to a lot of arguments on how to get things done. But you know what? We got through it. Lots of good conversations and communication taught us that we both bring good ideas to the table, and neither of us are “right” or “wrong” in the way we work. I’m really happy we got to have these experiences together before the wedding, and that we were able to build this home together. And by build, sometimes it’s literally! We’ve hand-built a lot of our own furniture, to enjoy for years to come. How many people can say they built their first bed together?

Or eat home-cooked meals on a hand-built table?

I know we’ll treasure all these memories for years to come. I’d encourage all of you to go out and build something together, it’s eye-opening as a couple! And who knows, you may end up like me and be better than your SO at operating a power saw. ;)

What big projects have you undertaken as a couple? Did you find you worked well together, or were you having to butt heads?

Great work! That bathroom remodel is my favorite. I love how you made the original blue tile work so well in the space. The biggest thing we’ve built is Ikea furniture. ;)

I’m so amazed! How did you guys manage all of that? Did either of you have previous experience in building things? Or someone to give you some guidance? The table and bed are amazing! Serious kudos to you both!!

The bathroom remodel was definitely my fave and the pieces you both built together are beautiful…have you had experience doing this before?

Great job! I can’t believe how awesome everything looks! We built our three garden boxes together–thought it would be a week-long project, and instead it took two months!! It was so fun and worth it though!
