Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

My Biggest Weakness

August 6th, 2010 @ 2:17 pm by Mrs. Husky

I simply cannot resist a dark and rich…

My Biggest Weakness : wedding beauty denver Huskycoffee huskycoffee

cup of coffee.

Without several morning helpings, I tend to be cranky, absentminded, and a host of other less-than-ideal traits. But the many years of drinking these cups of deliciously dark caffeine have made my teeth a shade or two darker than brilliant white.

But with all the teeth-whitening options out there, no problem! Right? Well…

Just one major problem. The directions for the Crest White Strips I bought suggest I avoid dark foods and drinks (coffee and wine are explicitly mentioned) for the duration of my treatments. They recommend I wait a full 24 hours after the last strip is used. This is a 14-day system! I can’t drink coffee for 15 full days??

Deep breath.

So now I’m faced with two choices:

  1. Continue drinking coffee while on my whitening treatment. This will lessen the effects of the strips, but I probably won’t turn into Crazy-Rabid-Husky.
  2. Quit cold turkey. Deal with caffeine-withdrawal headaches. Pain is beauty?

I plan to use the strips as close to the actual wedding day as possible, which means I’ll probably be dealing with lots of other stresses—do I really need to quit coffee, too? Maybe I should start weaning myself off now—tone it down to just a single cup for the next few weeks, and then just give it up completely.

Have any of your wedding-day plans interfered with your day-to-day life? How did you deal?

Most dentists recommend drinking dark liquids through a straw to avoid staining. Could you stand having coffee with a straw for 15 days?

I hate to be an enabler…but…you could drink it with a straw. ;) That’s what celebs do with red wine, supposedly.

Use a straw and kind of suck it down the back of your throat. Just make sure it’s not too hot! :)

Use a straw! I drink almost everything - including, yes, hot coffee - through a straw. It bypasses your front teeth that way, keeps ‘em pearly white. It takes some getting used to, be careful you don’t burn yourself!

straw is a great suggestion!! Another is to use Listweinr extreme whitening tooth rinse… you swoosh it in your mouth for a minute before brusing your teeth day and night… doesnt say ANYTHING about coffee or alcohol and works like a CHARM!!! 2 weeks and Ihave teeth 2 shades whiter already

If you are going to drink coffee, then I second/third/fourth using a straw. Keep in mind those strips can weaken your tooth enamel and make your teeth more porous. This would cause your teeth even more suspectible to absorbing the stain. If that was the case, you might as well skip the strips and just continue drinking the coffee as usual.

Defiantly a straw! I drink from my coffee with one everyday. I constantly get people asking me what I’m doing, but it pays off!! Defiantly better than coffee-withdrawl :)

Make the switch to redbull. It will help with the morning evilness, and you can switch right back when you are done.

Just keep drinking coffee! I’ve used the strips pretty often over the years and it’s never been a problem for me (and I’m a 2-cup of coffee a day girl, plus a red wine drinker). I’d say use a set of strips now, then another set in the 2 weeks before the wedding. If you really think the coffee is keeping the strips from working this time, you can go cold turkey next time.

Another vote for straws! That’s what I did. :)

Do NOT try going off caffeine that close to your wedding. Your sanity is worth a not quite perfect white set of teeth. Chances are, you are the only one who even has a chance of noticing the difference, and going off of caffeine will make you cranky, tired, headachey, and more stressed than you’ll already be. Take a fellow caffeine addict’s word for it!

As someone who obviously endorses coffee :-), I’d say go for the straws. This is something I’m going have to do as well… never thought about it!! Go ride that caffeine wave :-)

This is helping me too. I’ll be drinking through a straw. Thanks!

I agree with everyone about drinking it through a straw. If you can’t make it through the 14 day treatment, I think Crest has a 7 day and a 3 day whitening system. They might make your teeth and gums more sensitive, but it would be less time drinking through a straw or not having coffee at all.

I had to quit coffee when I started a new med for migraines, and my doctor suggested rather than going cold turkey (because that would trigger my migraines), I should start drinking tea. Tea has less caffeine than coffee, so it was safe on my meds, and wouldn’t totally throw me into caffeine withdrawals. It worked for me. I started off with the same size tea as I was drinking coffee (large), then a week on medium, then a 1/2-week on small, then 1/2 week on 1/2 a small. After that, I was clean. (c:

ONe of my bridesmaids is a dentist and she made me the professional teeth-whitening molds for bleaching. SHe told me that your teeth are actually more sensitive to stains within 24 hours of bleaching, so don’t drink coffee while whitening (or red wine, or anything that would stain a white shirt really) or you won’t see any whitening effects. She is also a coffee-fiend, so she drinks mountain dew or red bull for caffeine while whitening. Also, you don’t have to do all 14 days in a row. What I do is whiten for three days a week, wait 24 hours, then drink coffee/red wine for the rest of the week. GL

Coffee is one of the most wonderful parts of my day (I’m quite addicted). I think cutting it out is absolutely tragic!
