As my friends were getting dressed, it was finally my turn to get ready. I started feeling a little bit nervous at this point! As I mentioned in my last post, for most of the morning/early afternoon I was sort of like, “Oh this is fun, hanging out with my friends,” but once my hair got set into rollers, it sank in that today was the day!
(I think this is a good look for me*)
After my hair came out of the rollers (we left them in for a while as others got their hair/makeup finished), it was all hands on deck as both Kelley and Amie worked on making me look presentable! I was pretty excited at this point:
(Judging from the photos, I had a permanent smile going on)
(some of my favorite photos)
Suddenly I was almost ready to go! Kelley had taken into consideration everything I had mentioned after my hair trial, and also made note that it would have to withstand the gale force winds we had been witnessing outside our window. We went with a more textured updo, and no tendrils (the wind took care of that for me), and I loved it. While she put the finishing touches on that, Amie was replicating the makeup look I had loved from my makeup trial. It was fun having them both bustling around me, I felt like a movie star!
(checking out the finished product in the mirror. Hi Amy!)
On an amusing note, as Amie started putting foundation on my face, she paused, looked confused, checked her notes and said “Is it possible you’re more pale now than you were at your trial”? Yes that’s right folks, I was even more ghostlike than in winter! We determined it was because my trial happened right after my bachelorette party where I was in the sun snowshoeing and skiing, and must have gotten a slight tan! She took the foundation off and adjusted lighter after saying “Well, I think you’re the first bride I’ve ever had who has been paler for her wedding!”
Amie’s bubbly personality makes her really easy to be around, and I appreciated the fact that she worked happily and confidently to get me ready. She and Kelley were part of why I had remained so calm!
Once that was done, I asked Kelley to put on my (DIY) veil before we left for the venue, but she had to stand on the couch to get to the top of my head! Too tall Guinea Pig…
(We even bobby pinned the veil to my head in a (later failed) attempt to beat the wind!*)
Now I was ready with everything but the dress! In fact, I was already wearing something very special - my something bee-orrowed! Does that hair flower look familiar? It’s the amazing Mrs. Cupcake’s hair flower! She generously let me borrow it for our wedding, and I think having something from a wonderful Bee gave me good karma on our wedding day.
(False lashes = win, and the hair flower was seriously a perfect fit)
It was time to head to our venue. This is when I realized we were running 15 minutes late, and when we got to the shuttle I had arranged to get there early, the driver was totally confused about what he was supposed to be doing. After a few tense moments of pulling out my shuttle contract and verifying 5 times that he now knew where he was going and when to be at the next place, the only time of stress where I started to panic on the day of our wedding was over. Whew!
(I thought it was hilarious that my dress bag turned out to be blue, too - everything coordinated!)
We hopped on said shuttle and drove the 10 minutes to the venue—it would later head back to the hotel to pick up the guys, then join a second shuttle in making the rounds picking up guests and taking them to and from the hotels and ceremony/reception (as I repeatedly reminded the shuttle driver
). Finally, I would get to put on this lovely, beautiful, amazing dress:
(Oh how I love the lace and sweetheart neckline)
Our venue had a bridal room off to the side for us to use as a getting ready/hide out spot (and our own giant bathroom so I didn’t have to cram myself and my dress into a stall!). We quickly dumped our stuff and started the business of getting me dressed.
(tunnel!)
I think I was a wee bit excited to be putting this dress on:
(not surprisingly, I make a lot of awkward faces in photos… OK, fine - in life)
Then it was time for a quick modification. When I bought my dress, I had tried it on with a sash, and loved the dress more than without the sash. However, I wasn’t a fan of having a big bow on my butt, and I preferred the clean lines of a belt-type sash with no trailing end pieces down the back. So we used double stick tape from the seamstress, and stuck the ribbon to my waist!
(Sister GP lifts my veil as I attempt to put the sash on myself - silly me)
I had previously cut it to the right length, and then the day of just used a piece of the very strong tape to keep it closed in the back over the buttons. It turned out to be a multi-person effort:
(We actually have many photos of friend DB and Mom Guinea Pig attempting to get this just right - it’s rather amusing)
After final approval from my friends,
(I love the looks on everyone’s faces in this photo!)
and one last ’readjustment’,
(crinkly nose!)
I was ready to go see my soon-to-be-husband! But first, I have to tell you about the boys getting ready…
