Love, Carved in Time

August 7th, 2010 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Plaid

I love the idea of a sweetheart table and we’re planning on having one at our wedding. I haven’t thought much about decor for the table yet except for one thing that I knew I had to have.

A couple months ago I think I was perusing Martha Stewart Weddings online and saw a picture of the couple’s initials carved inside a heart on a white birch tree stump. How adorable is that?

Well, I live in the South so we don’t have white birch trees down here… bummer. :( A couple days ago I was flipping through the Pottery Barn catalog at work and saw white birch tree stump candles. Fate? I think so!

I was planning on picking one up until yesterday, when I went to Target in search of a wallet and found the exact same candle for half the price. Heck yeah! I bought it!

So here’s my latest DIY project:

I just used a knife to carve our initials and wedding date into the candle. The candle option is so much better because now after the wedding we can display it in our house. I love it!

Did you make anything for the wedding that you plan on displaying in your home afterward?

Nice idea, it looks great :) we’re going to try and re-use some of our wedding decor in our house after the wedding as well.

Suuuuuper cute idea. It’s a bit hard to read though, what about tracing the outline with a permanent marker? Just an errant thought. It’s going to look great on your table!

Ahhh! Someone gave us some of those (I think the PB ones), and I was thinking -”How ugly. WHAT am I going to do with these??” I think I have a solution! What a great idea -you owned it!!

Really cute! Love when an idea comes to fruition in ways you didn’t expect! I’m with Miss Sand Dollar though, maybs you need a way to make it ‘pop’ a little more…

This is a great idea! I agree with Miss Sand Dollar though, maybe go over the carving with a dark brown marker to make it more visible.

That is sooo pretty! Love the idea too- I’ve noticed a more rustic theme in weddings lately & this fits so nicely

Thanks ladies! And Miss Sand Dollar, I knew it was missing something. I just worry if I darken it and I hate it, I won’t be able to fix it.

If you darken it and hate it, you may be able to scrape off that layer of wax. All it will do is make the engraving deeper. It makes sense in my head at least… :-p

I love birch wood, especially with initials. We plan on displaying one of centerpieces in our house after the wedding. I think it will be a fun reminder of the day.

Tried to replicate this -FAIL. (It’s on display nevertheless.) I still have 1 more birch bark candle, so when this one burns down, I’ll give it another shot!

Use a brown washable marker, the kind kids in Kindergarten use. Should wash right off if you don’t like it, plus it will look water-colory and not harsh. Try it on the bottom of the candle first if you want to test it.
