Update: 100 Day Challenge

August 7th, 2010 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Starfish

The 100 day challenge is well under way. At the 25 day mark, I had exercised 23 hours, with only one day of no exercise. As time is crunching down, I’ve been ramping it up more and more.

How am I staying motivated? Well, besides walking with Sky, I decided to take my routine to the next level. Awhile back, I started looking into personal trainers in my area. I found many will give you a free trial session to test it out. I had a few in mind I wanted to try, but after my first consultation, I knew I found the right fit. It’s like hiring a photographer; it’s important that you have a connection.

I started working with the trainer before the 100 day challenge, but then I knew the challenge would be going into effect and I needed to find a way to motivate myself. I’ve never liked to exercise. I get bored too easily. I used to keep fit with group sports like a few years of softball, a couple years of basketball, a couple years of soccer, a year of cheerleading, a year of hockey, a couple years of dancing, a year of volleyball…

Do you believe me now when I say I get bored easily?

Since graduating, I haven’t had much time for group sports. Even my company’s softball team’s schedule hasn’t been working out. So, I thought I’d give a trainer a shot.

I like working with the trainer because every session we do something new. At first, I didn’t like kick boxing, but now it’s my favorite part of our session. I even like the sprawls thrown in there during my minutes on the bag. It’s been about a month with the trainer, but I’m already starting to see results. I haven’t lost much weight, but I am getting toned.

I originally started doing one-on-one sessions with the trainer, but realized it’s cheaper and more fun to do group personal training classes. There are up to 5 people per class with one trainer, and we do pretty much the same things I did in a one-on-one class. The only difference is that you can tailor your one-on-one classes if you’re working on something specific. I plan to do a few more one-on-ones before the wedding to work on my arms and upper back. Then, I’ll be able to work on the targeted areas at home. I just need to learn what to do and how to do it. I find the group classes are more motivating because I don’t want to be the slacker in the class.

Now that I know how to exercise, I’ve started doing it on my own, as well. I walk Sky every day, do group classes twice a week, and every other night I add in toning. My next goal is to start doing cardio. I know it’s the key to get in the best shape, so I’ll need to find some fun ways to include this in my regimen.

I’ve gone from couch potato to super motivated with a little help from my friends, my new trainer, and of course, Sky.

Would you consider hiring a personal trainer? Do you know of any good cardio workouts I can try?

I loved working out with a trainer! I wish I had the money to do it again.

Good luck with the Cardio. My favorite workout is Jillian Michael’s “No More Trouble Zone’s”. It’s circuit training so you are staying aerobic while toning.

Well done Starfish!!! Staying motivated is the crux of it all. Sounds like once you are in the gym, you are able to work hard. I was a trainer for a year at a Golds and I whipped many brides-to-be into fitting form. Since a pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat its important to work them. Way to go on the muscle building, but you really gotta get going on the cardio! 20 solid minutes, 3xs a week at an elevated heartrate is going to melt ur bod into shape!

Keep at it! =)

That is awesome! I’ve lost over 20 pounds and I’m finding it difficult to lose more, so now I’m working on toning too. I tried to do the 200 sit-up challenge (I want Britney abs) but Mr. G said I’m not doing them right. I really wish I could afford a trainer, because I’m sure I’m not using the machines right at the gym. In fact, one of the trainers told me I wasn’t. I do wonder how trainers keep in business though- I figure once I learn how to exercise I won’t really need one anymore! Do you think trainers are worth it?

Of course if I did pony up for one there would be a language barrier!

Last summer, I did ZUMBA dance classes with my mom and LOVED it! It’s a great cardio workout for me, because it’s like hidden cardio. You’re having so much fun, you don’t even notice!

Wow, you’re an inspiration! I always considered personal trainers to be too expensive, but I really have no idea how much they cost! It would probably help to have someone motivate me like that!

I’ve told my fiance for years that being an athlete all your life sometimes doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to motivate to workout on an individual basis. For that reason, if I didn’t have my fiance to motivate me, I would definitely get a personal trainer. Thankfully though, he motivates me to get up 4 times a week and lift weights and then I either go on a bike ride, swim, or run in the gym, depending on the weather. I’ve found that as long as I have something to watch (tv) or music to occupy myself, I can last through the cardio. I’m hoping to get to the point where I love to do cardio b/c of the endorphin kick, we’ll see!

Miss Glasses - You may want to ask your gym if they have a one time trainer run through that you can either purchase or that they offer for free. A lot of the time gyms offer the one free training sessions just for the reasons you listed, after all, they don’t want people to hurt themselves if they can’t help it. Congrats on the 20 lbs, keep it up!

@danadelphia: My legs and arms have gotten much more tone, I’m losing flab and gaining muscle. For awhile I couldnt see the results, as I just watch the scale, but I’ve been told by a lot of people they can see it working.

@PrincessBrideSuzy: I’ve heard so many good things about Jillian Michaels dvds, I think I am going to go with one of hers, thanks ofr the recommendation!
@Miss Glasses: My trainer has been so worth it. I have so much fun going and I’m much more motivated because I feel like I’m reporting to him each week and I want to do better each week.
@Miss Socks: Doing group training classes is so much more affordable. I originally only wanted to do one on one, but after a free trial of the group, I actually like it better! so many places offer free trials, even going to a couple classes is helpful because they show you what to do and many things you can do at home.

@sopetaia: That’s impressive! :)
