A Place to Marry

August 9th, 2010 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Husky

We took a trip down south this weekend to visit the wedding property and try to get a feel for where the ceremony should be. Since this isn’t really a “wedding venue,” the ceremony location isn’t immediately obvious. Here are our top contenders:

A Place to Marry : wedding denver venues Husky1 husky1

(personal photo)

  • Side-yard; Facing Hills. With this ceremony setup, the aisle would run parallel to the main house. The arch would be set up so that the guests would have a view of the hills during the ceremony. There’s a play structure visible behind us, to Mr. Husky’s right, but that will be moved before our wedding.\
  • Pros: Large open yard; flat ground; easy access to house (easy for me to get from the house to the aisle); close proximity to the barn for reception; beautiful view for all guests.
  • Cons: House is very visible and doesn’t really fit into the look I’m after; telephone pole in the background (not visible in this photo, but you can see the line above our heads).

  • Lower Yard; Facing Hills. On the left side, Mr. Husky and I are role-playing. The photo on the right shows the entire yard. Once again, the play structure would be moved. This site is a bit further from the house but definitely still close by. My trek to the aisle would be slightly more challenging but still totally do-able.
  • Pros: Large, flat yard for easy chair setup; beautiful view for half of the guests; decent access to house.
  • Cons: Further from reception area; half the guests get a less desirable view (of the house and less beautiful scenery—but still pretty!).

  • Side Yard; Facing Barn. With this setup, we would be in the yard to the side of the main house. The guests would have their backs to the house, facing the barn.
  • Pros: Very easy access to house; flower beds create a sort of ceremony feel; close proximity to reception.
  • Cons: House is very visible; some of the background is kind of ugly (not visible here, but various pieces of machinery behind barn).

(personal photo)

  • Inside of barn entrance. Truth be told, we would probably only consider this option if we were to get rain on that day. The tents will be set up in front of the barn for the reception, so we could have all of the guests protected from the weather.
  • Pros: Weather protection; decoration double-duty for ceremony and reception.
  • Cons: Much less pretty; the area in front of the barn entrance looks like it would be messy in the event of rain.

So those are the options we’ve come up with. I think we’re leaning toward the lower yard; then we can have the happy hour in the side yard and the tables in front of the barn. Which ceremony site would you choose?

It is really kinda impossible to say without being there since there is so much you can’t see in the pictures but I love the view facing the barn especially with the rock wall defining an altar space to get married in. One thing to definitely consider is where the sun is going to be at the time of your ceremony. The most gorgeous view in the world is going to be worth squat if the sun is in everyone’s eyes.

We had the same issue (getting married in a non-traditional venue and having to figure out where the ceremony would be). I walked out on the deck by the water though and my first thought was “I wonder if this could work” The shape is a little awkward for it (long and skinny, making for more distance from our guests than there otherwise would be) but it overlooks the water, it has a great structure to it, it is out of the direct sun and would work even in light rain and it just felt right. We figured out how to make it work.

They’re all really pretty options! But I kind of like it facing the barn.

From your descriptions I’d go with the first one! Good luck :-)

I would go for the one that is facing the barn, but as a second choice i would go for the yard.

I love the side yard facing the barn! I think the way the landscaping is lends itself well to a ceremony…it really makes you guys a focal point! That said, I think the whole area is gorgeous and you really can’t go wrong! It’s going to be fabulous!

Loving the barn options. I liked it in the background, but then I also love seeing you stand in the doorway!

I still like the lower yard, which the pictures don’t do a lot of justice to, but as everyone else says, the side yard facing the barn is cute too.
