Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Faux Pas Schmo Pas

**Mr. Locket stay out! This post contains a photo of me in my dress!

After some talk on the hive boards about whether or not Mama Locket’s MOB dress would be a major faux pas, I was nervous and very worried that maybe we had made a very big mistake in picking her dress.

To my relief my worries (or cares) disappeared at the end of June when I visited Mama Locket, Wedding Dress Locket (yes, I will give my dress a name), and Mama’s dress. To my delight the dress was in fact much darker than what it looked like on BCBG’s website and in my opinion wasn’t as bridal looking as I originally thought. (Who cares if I just saw it featured as one on 100 Layer Cake?)

Besides, look how happy Mama Locket looks in it:

Adding a bolero to it was also a key component in lessening the bridal look, and I think it was working. The sample she tried on was a bit snug and wasn’t in the color she wanted either, but with some creative draping we were able to get an idea of what shade would look best.

Taupe? Nope!

Mmmmm….Mocha! Looks like a winner!

And, just for fun she also tried on a longer jacket which just felt too business-y. We were not fans.

Standalone, I could see how Mama’s dress could be a bit bridal, but when we add the mocha bolero the bridal look will def be toned down. Also, standing side by side you can really see the contrast between our two dresses, and in my opinion her dress doesn’t look much different from some other MOB dresses I’ve come across.

And for comparison, a few other MOB dress styles that look similar to Mama’s dress:

short champagne lace dress with bolero

What do you think? Are we squashing that faux pas? Or are we still cutting it close? What does your MOB dress look like?

I don’t think you have a thing to worry about! You are definitely the only bride in that pic :)

I’m all for “if it works for you, go for it” bus over here. I asked my mom to wear a white/off-white color, so I second “faux pas, schmo pas.”

I don’t think you made a mistake at all. It’s gorgeous yet you absolutely will stand out as the bride…no mistaking that! :)

I think it looks great with the bolero and very appropriate for MOB!

it’s a really great dress, and i’m with violet–as long as you’re okay with it, that’s the most important! people usually think of the “faux pas” as offending the bride, and you aren’t offended, so perfect! she looks fantastic (as do you, but that goes without saying).

You guys look so happy together!!! You are clearly the bride and she is your mother! My mom is wearing a “robins egg blue” dress because blue is her favorite and most flattering color.

I think the reason it’s a faux pas is because no one wants Mommy stealing the attention on your big day. You obviously love the dress and the way it makes Mama Locket look and feel. It’s your wedding darn it! Do whatever you want!

well it still looks pretty bridal to me, BUT if you are ok with it then that’s all that matters! Plus you two compliment each other really well, it looks very nice together :) it’s like when brides choose to have their bridesmaids wear white or ivory. It makes for a very gorgeous look and since they are ok with not being the only one in white then that’s all that matters in the end. The mocha bolero is definitely the best accessory option too, she’ll look great!

I think she looks great and you look like THE BRIDE! I agree with others that most of the errors are when someone (a guest) wears something to upstage the bride. Not the case here, since you love her dress and want her to wear it!

Love both of your choices. I think the MOB dress is beautiful, and she will not be confused for the bride.

I haven’t looked for MOB or MOG dresses yet, but I am already dreading it!

Mama Locket’s dress does not look bridal at all, especially when paired with that bolero. I think she made a fabulous choice.

You both look lovely — best wishes. BTW my mom is also wearing ivory and my gown is ivory — but like you and your mom every one will know who is the bride.

I think she looks great!! I’m voting for a mocha bolero which will bring out the darker tones of her dress.
