The Great Wedding-Band Debate

August 9th, 2010 @ 3:16 pm by Mrs. Plaid

I honestly haven’t given wedding bands too much thought. Well I guess that’s only true if your definition of “not much thought” is searching high and low on the internet for the perfect ring on at least ten separate occasions. But you know, I’m just saying…

What are the chances that Mr. Plaid pretty much knows what he wants and I don’t have a clue? I guess pretty big in my case, so without further ado, here’s what he’s thinking:

Pretty, huh? I really like the hammered look. And some of the rings I found are good quality and pretty inexpensive. That’s two yays!

So that’s one ring down and one ring to go. To match or not to match? That is the question. And I’m not talking matching Mr. Plaid’s ring. That’s actually not that important to me. Hmm…I wonder if he cares? I shall ask. What I mean is do I get a wedding band that matches my engagement, or something totally unique?

Here’s a reminder of what my ring looks like.

Here’s the deal. My job (I work in a bakery) doesn’t allow me to wear my engagement ring (technically anyway—I was cheating and wearing it anyway, but I got caught and can’t wear it anymore). So do I buy a wedding band that matches my engagement ring for times when I’m not at work and can wear both together?

Or do I get a wedding band that’s totally unique and pretty, but something that’s totally acceptable to wear at work?

But what if I buy a unique band that doesn’t match my engagement ring, but I do want to wear both when I’m not at work? What do I do? Ugh…see my dilemma?

What would you do? Did you have trouble choosing your wedding band? What helped you make your decision?

Two wedding bands! One matchy-matchy and one for work.

Problem solved! (you’re welcome :-).)

I love that look for the guys! I’m kinda on the matching bandwagon for the band and e-ring but I do see the appeal of getting a unique wedding band that can stand out on its own!

i’d say get a matching 1 and dont wear it to work! actually my fiance and i got matching bands which i think is cute, although some girls asked me whether im wearing my fiance’s ring :s
but u know what, im seriously pro not wearing it to work, im a dr and i wash my hand gazillion times aday, so i have to take it off all the time, and then i forgot it in my surgical gowns and it went to laundry and i never saw it again :(

I say be a two band bride! Get something cheap to wear alone and maybe something fancy to wear with your diamond. Or the other way around! :)

I guess the question is - how badly do you want to wear a ring at work? If you don’t care about wearing a ring at all at work - get the matchy matchy. If you really really know you are going to want to wear a ring to work daily, go for something you can wear to work and maybe save the engagement ring for the right hand when off work.

You could get something that splits the difference. I got a band the has the feel I like about my engagement ring, but stands on it’s own nicely too. I don’t know what would fit that criteria in your case, but it’s something to keep in mind as an option.

I have an odd shaped e-ring, very hard to match a band to. So i bough a cooler band to wear on my left hand and will wear my e-ring on my right hand. Just another option

I am getting a wedding ring that complements my engagement ring but can also stand alone if I’m not wearing the e ring at the same time. Good luck on your decision & your ring is gorgeous!!

I’m just catching up! Yay for an Austin bee! I think you should get both if it’s feasible :)

The majority of life is spent not at work, so I’d buy a wedding band to go with the e-ring. That way the majority of the time, you’ll have them both on and they’ll look lovely. While you’re at work, the plainer band is still fine on its own so nothing is lost.

My rings don’t exactly go together, but I’m not having them soldered together, and I love how they look together.

A friend of mine at work actually wears her e-ring on her left hand and her wedding band on her right hand because her wedding band is tungsten. Sometimes she’ll wear just the wedding band (on her left hand). So, I say do what you want!

My vote is: go fun! You already have the fancy, you might as well make an impression while you’re at work. I mean, you are there for a huge chunk of time. Might as well let the lusty men out there know you’re taken ;)

I’m a major klutz AND used to work in a bakery, and one of the perks of Mr’s job is that he has access to a machine shop where he made me a titanium (i.e. human proof, but still safe if a Dr. ever needs to cut it off). So, my vote is for a “stand in” ring that you can wear anywhere and a for-real wedding band that goes with your engagement and an everyday, band that you can wear to work/camping/etc.

Just curious, why can you wear the one kind at work but not the other?

@msmarathon: I can’t have a ring with diamonds in it at work because it would be a liability if a stone fell out in a cake or something we’d be in major trouble.

I really like the branch one! I’d say go with that one, and if you want to wear both, you can wear the engagement ring on the right hand, right?

@Miss Plaid: ahhh ok, that makes sense! My vote is 2 rings if you can, but if you must pick one, the branch ring!
