That’s Not a Ring

August 9th, 2010 @ 11:43 am by Mrs. Knitting

As you may recall, Mr. Knitting and I struggled about what to do in terms of a wedding ring for him since he has huge knuckles and doesn’t like rings. As I learned from Weddingbee readers, the huge knuckle problem could have been easily overcome with a hinged ring. However, while Mr. K would have agreed to wear a wedding ring if I insisted, I wasn’t really comfortable with the idea that this symbol of our marriage would be something he didn’t really like and would be wearing only to please me. I also knew that I wouldn’t feel like he would be any less committed to our marriage if he’s not wearing a ring.

With all that in mind, we eventually decided on a wedding watch. Mr. K has never really owned a really nice watch and is always eyeing watches while we’re shopping, so it seemed like the perfect time to head over to Birks and buy him one.

Here it is:

He loves it, but is a little annoyed with me because I won’t let him wear it until the wedding. Even though it’s not actually a wedding ring, it’s our version of one and I still want to treat it like one. Therefore, he’s not allowed to wear it until I put it on him during our ceremony.

Side note: I’m actually terrible at figuring out how anything works (my brain just doesn’t work like that) so I’m going to have to practice putting the watch on him a lot so that this isn’t a hilarious and awkward 10 minutes of our ceremony.

All in all, we’re both really happy with the wedding watch. We suspect some relatives won’t understand, but we don’t really care. It’s our wedding, our marriage, and our wedding jewellery!

Have you gone with a wedding ring alternative?

No ring alternative, but after much indecision Mr. L finally has a ring! I also bought Mr. L a watch as his wedding gift and can’t wait to give it to him…I am also making him wait even though he knows we already have it.

That’s so great. I still haven’t gotten my sweetie his ring because we’re still searching but I did get him a watch for his wedding gift. :)

My dad has never worn a wedding ring (he has had one but promptly lost it as he has never really been much of a jewelry wearer). However, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t forget he’s married! It’s a beautiful watch and I think he’ll really love it. And when he looks at it, he can always think “Hey, remember that TIME I got married?”.

What a GREAT way to solve the no ring dillema!
I actually got my hubby a watch AND a ring - the ring was for the wedding and we called the watch an “engagement watch” even though we didn’t actually find one he loved til we were on our honeymoon!

I love that watch, and I think it’s so sweet that you’ll use it in place of a ring during a ceremony! So sweet!

Just like every marriage is different, every wedding is different, every “ring” can be different & that’s great you were able to find something you both were comfortable with!

I’m so excited to see another couple go the watch route. My fiance hates the idea of a wedding ring. He grew up in the country and knows men who have lost fingers because of their rings. So we decided to get him a watch. I just hope people will still take our ceremony and marriage seriously.

Love your mindset on the issue - definitely a positive one. Love the idea of a watch, too! I think to each person, the “ring” is something different.
