Say Yes to the Dress?

August 10th, 2010 @ 12:35 pm by Mrs. Husky

I am having a major dress dilemma. No, I haven’t fallen out of love with my wedding dress—but I have fallen in love with a dress for a different wedding-related occasion:

Say Yes to the Dress? : wedding denver dress Husky5 husky

A dress for my bachelorette party!

It’s perfect—flirty, but tasteful. Silver sequins! Flowy, pleated chiffon! Have I mentioned how much I love pleats? Probably not, but I LOVE pleats. There are even a few in my actual wedding dress. So what’s the problem?

Well, to begin with, the dress retails for $440. Excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor. Next, it’s about three seasons old. As a non-slave to fashion, I’m not worried about it being “so three years ago.” What I am worried about is the fact that it is incredibly difficult to find.

I found one in my size on eBay, but the price is still a staggering $247 + shipping. Now, you should know that I’m a Ross kinda gal. Y’know, that place where the most expensive dress is under $100 (and even then, only if it’s a well-known name brand)? So $247 for me is a lot.

But I still find myself tempted. I’m trying to get over my temptation. I mean, when else could I possibly wear this? It’s kind of fancy for general evenings out. I certainly can’t wear it to someone else’s wedding! And surely my bachelorette party is bound to get crazy—I might just die if somebody spilled a drink on my $250 dress!

I even used Etsy’s Alchemy feature to request a custom replica, but from the few bids I received, none of them seemed to be able to find the right fabric for the top, and they still wanted to charge me a substantial sum.

Meanwhile, I’m still searching for alternatives. And keeping my eye out for a less expensive one. But my eye keeps wandering back to this…

Have you been tempted by a non-essential wedding item that falls way outside of your budget? Did you splurge or talk yourself out of it?

It’s sooo pretty. And soooooooooo short! Have you found a size chart for that designer? The really high end dresses like that often run really small - like, wedding gown sizing small. Good luck!!

Um…yes. I was tempted by many non-essential items. Fortunately, I found a lot of them on sale and was still able to get them.

Cute dress! :o)

I had my own splurge moment, but it was for a much smaller item: a crystal hair comb. At first, I thought about making one, but it seemed too complicated to my limited DIY skills.

I ended up falling in love with a small comb for $80 on Serendipity Tiaras. $80 for something that would stick in my hair for a day… $80 could buy groceries, or a couple nice dinners out, or bridesmaids’ gifts…

It took me a month of staring longingly at it (almost every day… haha) before I decided that it really would make enough of of a difference to me to buy it.

The comb was beautiful, and it really did make a difference to me on my wedding day. I got so many compliments about it the day of, and looking at our pictures now, that’s still one of the first things my eyes are drawn to.

Oh wow, it’s so pretty. But I agree…I’m the kind of girl who feels guilty for buying a dress for $100. I hope you can find it at a better price.

I’m absolutely incapable of splurging on clothing items above $100. I definitely wait until things go on sale, which these days, they invariably do. I also am sometimes lucky to receive some of these slurge-worthy items as gifts from my fiance who lacks these sort of qualms. :)

Ooooooh, that dress is soooooo pretty! Could you double up and wear it to your rehearsal dinner or shower AND bachelorette?? I think if you could get more than one wear out of it, it’d be worth it…But I love clothes, so I’m not the best one to listen to on this stuff!

Oooo! I love it, it’s so perfect for a bachelorette parts. I’m not a shoe person and usually try to stick to DSW sales but I totally splurged on my shoes. And I love them. And it was worth it although my feet my disagree after a couple hours into our wedding day.

I love it - but weddings are expensive enough! No need to go overboard on one article of clothing… Then again, it’s so cute!

hmm, well why don’t you wear it for the bachelorette, get it dry cleaned and then sell it used to recoup some of the cost?

I JUST did this. I wanted a shower dress. So I added up my outstanding bills for the wedding to see if I could afford it (granted it was only $150). Major justification comes from being able to wear it again.

But who’s to say you can’t wear that one again for your birthday? Or it would make a fab New Years dress (I’m picturing with leather leggings and a faux fur).

Um.. yes. I am now the proud owner of four new high end super expensive designer dresses! Only one was on sale and one of them I couldn’t get from the cleaners in time to even wear!

Honestly, looking your absolute best during all of the wedding events is priceless. I don’t regret all my purchases for a second, and it was my last chance to do it before the joint checking :)

Such a fun dress! I was tempted by pretty much every other wedding events outfits! I definitely spent more than I wanted to on my bachelorette dress. But I plan to do what Trailmix suggessted and wear it for another event, because really when will I wear all these white dresses again?

Super cute! I’m with Mrs. Trail Mix, see if you can get more than 1 wear out of it so the price per wear could possibly be lower than a dress you bought at Ross but only wore one time.

I splurged on pomanders for my ceremony. I’d been drooling over pomanders since before I even got engaged, but once I found out how expensive they were I balked. Ultimately, I compromised with myself and bought two double pomanders on Etsy for ceremony decoration, but skipped on any for the reception. And they obviously weren’t real flowers (which I originally wanted). They were still pretty expensive, but I’m really happy I went for it!

I haven’t run into anything yet similar to this but have a feeling I will! I say just go for it, because after all this only happens once right? You will find other uses for it later, even if you just end up selling it!

I think you should just get it! You can always sell it after. You seem to love it and I think you’ll regret it if you don’t buy it.
There are some similar little white pleated dresses at BCBG, but they are also about $2-300+, so might as well get the one on ebay!

Ms Husky- As someone who is currently packing for her bachelorette party this coming weekend, and has just tried on a total of 8 dresses that I have hurriedly purchased (at several stores and online) and I am pretty happy with the one I got, but I wish it wouldn’t have taken so much emergency effort (and 2-day shipping!). I had my shower dress picked out months in advance and it was so NOT stressful. BUY THIS DRESS. BUY IT NOW!!! Before you size runs out, and you can’t find it anywhere else! Good luck :-)

PS you’ll definitely regret not getting it and nothing else will measure up!
