About Mrs. Starfish

College Love

August 10th, 2010 @ 6:33 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Having met in college, we knew we wanted to include some alma mater love. We don’t want to have a college wedding theme, so we’ve been trying to think of subtle ways to include our favorite place. I’ve been amazed at all the fun and unique ideas I’ve found to show some college love. You can put a college spin on pretty much every element of the wedding.

Venue - Say “I do” at your alma mater. See if they have a house of worship, or a location on campus that they allow alumni to use for ceremonies and or receptions. Many colleges and universities have gorgeous chapels. I love the photos from the recently featured “Real Wedding” of Hilary and John at The Memorial Church in Harvard Yard. The photos at the Harvard church are stunning.

College Love : wedding decor newport reception 40 Videography - Ask your videographer to do separate interviews. One with the bride and one with the groom, each re-telling the story of how you met or a favorite college memory.

Photography - Take photos on campus. You can do it at a place with meeting, like the place you met, or a field if you were both big sport fans, or use a significant building or landmark on campus as a back drop.

At the reception, make sure to get a photo with you and all of your college friends who attended the wedding to send to your alumni publication.

Food - Get a groom’s cake representative of your college. Mrs. Penguin had an old school UCLA Bruin mascot made for her husband.

Cake Toppe r- Mrs. Dolphin had a cake topper that reflected both her and Mr. Dolphin’s alma maters. Her alma mater’s mascot is a gator and his is a knight. She found a great way to include both their schools.

College Love : wedding decor newport reception Caketo Attire and Accessories - Dress the bridal party in your school’s colors. Another option is visiting the school’s gift shop to see if they have any school inspired accessories such as cufflinks or a tie with the schools insignia.

Table Numbers - have engagement photos taken on campus and use them as part of the table number or use names from college buildings. Mrs. Cheeseburger created table names with on and off campus places.

Favors - Make a donation to a scholarship fund at your school and create a notice announcing the donation placed on the guest book or gift card table, like this example from the Knot.

College Love : wedding decor newport reception Large I Another idea is to have edible favors in the shape of your school mascot like Mrs. Lamb. In honor of her and Mr. Lamb’s meeting place and alma mater, Bucknell, they ordered Chocolate Bison for their favors.

College Love : wedding decor newport reception 0141 Music - Use you college’s fight song for your grand entrance, or try to include it in another way like Miss Ribbons’ pep rally idea. You could also hire some current students in the band or chorus to provide the music at the ceremony.

Stationery - add your college colors or a meaningful symbol, like Mrs. Cheeseburger did on her invitations. she had her stationer add a hand-painted illustration of the sundial at Old Main, Penn State, complete with the same quote from the ensemble folder cover.

Groom’s Gift - If your groom is a huge fan of your alma mater’s teams and you live nearby, look into season tickets. For something more budget friendly check out the school’s gift shop and get something more sentimental to remind him of your time on campus.

Bridal Accessories - You can include your school colors in your accessories, like Mrs. Peach did. She created a DIY garter in Michigan’s colors and planned to get a Michigan pin to attach in the center.

Entertainment - hire your school mascot to come to the reception for an hour.

Decor - At a friend’s wedding, she purchased an old map of Newport, the location of her alma mater that was matted and framed. Guests signed the mat of the photo. This would also be great with a photo of an iconic building on campus or a photo from a campus engagement session. At a cousin’s wedding, they got a school banner and used it as decor and also in photos with former classmates.

Now that I’ve gathered all these great ideas, I just have to figure out what we plan to do!

Are you incorporating your alma mater in your wedding day? Have you seen any unique ways to do it?

We also met in college, and until now I really have not been thinking about doing this. I wish we could take pictures around campus, but it is 1.5 hours away from our wedding. Maybe we can do an anniversary photo shoot there. I also really like Mrs. Cheeseburger’s table tents. I might be borrowing that idea.

I would love to take pictures at our campus, but it’s 5 hours away. We are, however, having tables named for campus/city locations. I put my favorite picture/location as our table. :)

Some one may be knocked unconscious if we played Line Fight or That Good Ol’ Baylor Line, too many band members who automatically doing a swooshing Sic’em and wild horn flashes will be in attendance.
It would be great to have some sort of nod to Baylor since so many there will be alumns or current students.

I LOVE incorporating alma mater’s into wedding days, as you already know. I think it adds that personal touch and really speaks through to your guest’s who y’all are. Our guest’s LOVED our cake toppers and thought they were adorable. Anyone who didn’t know that we were representing the UF Gators and UCF Knight’s were quickly shown the door (JK!). :-)

we had planned to do group photos with our respective alums and then forgot the same as Mrs. Trail Mix..so sad.

However, I just saw the cutest get-a-way photo where they used college shakers instead of ribbon wands, etc. They were a cute burst of color as they ran to their car.

To piggy back on your groom’s gift idea…Vineyard Vines has a college collection of ties and tote bags. I know the BU bookstore (I spend too much time there) carries Polo by Ralph Lauren stuff with BU on it too.

We have only sort of thought about it.. we considered our college alma mater (where we also met) as a location for the wedding but ultimately decided against it. We’ve already thought about table numbering some of the tables with college names but I love how you present many many ideas that I can now think about!

We are using a few of the ideas you have collected. If it were up to FI everything for the wedding would be orange and blue, along with everything in our house!

We are doing a gator grooms cake and our favors are going to be chocolate gators (on a stick lollipop like?)

I really want to do engagement pictures in the swamp but we live 2.5 hours from Gainesville and I would probably need to find a photographer there, and with football season starting I don’t know when we could get into the stadium for pics.

Oh I absolutely love all of this ideas (especially the favors and the table names/locations). I will definitely have to incorporate my Alma Mater (NCSU - go wolfpack) in some way!

@ggsb: That’s such a fun idea!
@fromcharleston: Mr. starfish already has the Vineyard Viens tie from our college. If it matches his blazer, he’s going to wear it on the wedding day! :)
@LRin2011: I love the chocolate mascot favors, sentimental and edible!
@Miss Husky: Thanks! :) I didn’t really come up with most of these though, just found them on the internet, now we need to put our own spin on these.

Some really good ideas here! Unfortunately in England the “Be True To Your School” spirit is not so prevalent. Mr. G just doesn’t get it! But I want to find a way to put some Gaucho pride in our wedding and you’ve given me some ideas!
