Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

Our First Dance: The Song

August 10th, 2010 @ 5:44 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

Ever since we got engaged 18 months ago, the song “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat has been on my short list for our first dance. I’ve loved Jason Mraz since I saw him in concert back in 2002, when he was just starting to get big. Mr. Jelly and I both love duets, and Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat’s voices sound so beautiful together. And the lyrics—oh the lyrics!—they are just too perfect:

“I’m lucky I’m in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
I’m lucky we’re in love every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday”

Let’s see here… Mr. Jelly and I are best friends… Mr. Jelly is gone a lot due to his military career… we consider ourselves lucky each time he returns from a deployment safe and sound… we’ve been together 7 years… I’d pretty much say those lyrics sum it up perfectly! So why wasn’t it a no-brainer?

This is going to sound silly but…

I was concerned it was too popular. You know, overplayed. I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s the song that plays when United flights land, for Pete’s sake (or is it Delta? Anyone know what I’m talking about?)! I initially thought we should do something more unique. But try as I might, I couldn’t find anything I liked more. Then two things happened that confirmed that this was truly the right song for us. We played it for FMIL Jelly and she started to cry. She said the lyrics were just so perfect for our relationship. That same week, Mr. Jelly watched the music video for “Lucky” and noticed a curious coincidence around the 0:19 mark in the video… a shot of the Romanian embassy in Prague! As you may recall, I’m Romanian. Also, Mr. Jelly and I have been to Prague and he took a photo of me right in front of that embassy back in 2006. Check it out:

I’m a big believer in signs, and this silly little coincidence convinced me that this is the right first dance song for us, no matter how overplayed! We also signed up for dance lessons and our instructor said that we could definitely foxtrot to this song. But more on that later…

Did you ever second-guess one of your wedding choices just because it seemed too popular or overdone? I hope you said “screw it!” and went with what makes you happy!

OMG I was JUST thinking this too! My cousins play guitar very well and they love Mr. Mraz. I’ve thought about asking them to play this at our wedding, but I’ve seen it used so many times I was thinking it was “played out” too. Glad I’m not the only one!

But I still think you should use it. Your guests haven’t been to a million weddings where everyone was using the song and may have never even heard it before! If FMIL cried, good chance its the right thing to do!!!

Definitely very over played which sucks!! I love him to death!! He has so many songs that have never been on cds and are a bit hard to find, but he has so much more, which I’m sure you’ll love. I personally like Beautiful Mess. Maybe not a great first dance song, but anywhoooo his songs have very deep meanings so any of his others could be used. Just a thought ..goodluck!

I know what you mean, the first time I heard this song I really wanted it to be our first dance song, but the FI isn’t too keen on Jason Mraz. We’re trying to go for something more classical, like Frank Sinatra. But those lyrics are just so perfect! I think you should use it, its not like we go to 20 weddings a year and everyone uses it, no one will know at your wedding :)

I’m a big believer in signs too and I say definitely play it! If it’s perfect for you two then that is all that matters.

I’m totally with you on being bothered by things that feel overdone. However, you can’t argue with some sweet and poigant signs! If you love it, you love it - so be it! I think it’s a perfect song for you two.

Play it! Keep in mind, you will be listening to this song 50 years from now… and it will be bringing back happy memories. It certainly won’t be overplayed then… it will just remind you of a wonderful time in your life… and your first song should be something that has meaning to you. It’s perfect. Keep it.

Our first song was Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. Totally overplayed in its day, (our wedding was August 2009.) It’s our song, has been for years (long story,) but was worried it would seem cheesy or not right for our wedding song. Well, we kept it, and I’m so glad we did. It isn’t cheesy, it’s a classic.

And now, whenever we hear that song, almost a year later, we stop what we’re doing, and we dance. And it’s a moment I wouldn’t trade for the world, and just wouldn’t be as special with any other song.

‘Lucky’ is also a classic. Go for it. :-)

We have this song as the first on our wedding website.. although it’s the version with Ximena Sarinana singing Colbie’s part in Spanish. It’s beautiful!

That sounds like a great song for a first dance. Who cares how many times it has been played, it speaks to you. We are dancing to Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am”, which has been officially overplayed by that stupid Old Navy sweater commercial. I don’t care though, that was “our” song when we first started dating…WAY before the commercial.

I totally know what you mean. FI wanted to play the song “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol during our ceremony and I was all “omg its so overplayed and everyone will be sitting there going ‘hey… wasn’t that song on grey’s anatomy?’” But then he and my MOH convinced me that I’m the only one that still watches Grey’s. So Chasing cars was in! :)

I think it’s a fabulous, lovely, sweet song. And it may be popular now (because it’s GOOD), but in a year, or 10 or 50, you definitely won’t think “Oh our song is so overplayed.” It won’t be anymore!

Whoa–he asked me if this could be our first dance song. He’s in the military and gone, it meant a lot to us when we first heard it. Of course that was months before that song was released as a single–so I vetoed it bc it’s too popular, and now I’m thinking “who cares?” If it’s perfect for you, then go for it! (right?)

When it’s perfect, it’s perfect. Lucky was also on my short list of picks, since during a majority of our relationship I lived in a different state b/c of work. I worried that it would be too popular, and then we fell in love with another song, You are the Best Thing, which also felt right. As it turns out, my FI’s cousin ALSO picked You are the Best Thing, I cried when I found out because, I thought it was lesser known and unique. It just goes to show, you should pick with what is going to make YOU happy, don’t worry about anyone else. You’re going to look back, hear that song, and know how special it is to you!

Some things are popular because they’re awesome. We used this song on our wedding website, and went with something different for our first dance, but I love it!

Oh my gosh this was going to be our first dance song too! We have since *almost* decided to go with something different (which I have kind of always envisioned as my first dance wedding song) because we want to do a choreographed dance to it & don’t think it will fit since the tempo changes so much. However, do not worry about being “overplayed”- honestly we never even thought about it & in fact thought that maybe a lot of people WOULDN’T know it!

We’re glad that we used this song way early. Even our friends kept using this song in their weddings!

But you know what, if it truly means something to you, who cares?!
