Dress Fitting Take 1

August 10th, 2010 @ 3:30 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Dress Fitting Take 1 : wedding san diego wedding dress 1 Don’t Look

I’ve heard a lot of brides talk about their dress disappointment at their first dress fitting. It looks like I’m joining the masses. I literally had a “did I really pick this dress?” moment.

Dress Fitting Take 1 : wedding san diego wedding dress 2 IMG_3603

It just feels blah. The dress kind of just hangs. I asked my seamstress if she could tighten it around the hips. She said it would change the shape of the dress. I didn’t say anything out loud, but in my head I was thinking, “So what? Change it.” But, nice lil’ Hot Wings couldn’t say anything. For fitting 2, I’m making it a personal challenge to say something. I should say something, right?

The next issue was shopping for a bra. I thought about having bra pads sewn into the dress, but all the shops I went to didn’t have my size in stock. Even worse, none of the stores I visited had a freaking strapless bra in my size and in a white or nude, either! What the heck? So I ended up buying a bra one size up and using gel inserts. I actually bought a bustier with boning. I think this was a mistake. It was really hot in my dress. The dress already has boning and the bustier only added a second layer of boning. I think this added layer took away from the little bit of curviness I had.

What’s even more annoying is that I spent the ext $150 to have the custom hollow-to-hem with 4 inch heels. In the picture above, I’m wearing 4.25 inch heels and the freaking dress is STILL too long. Stupid bridal shop—I’m going to have to pay to have that brought up a smidge. With my little curves and it being strapless—plus the 1 inch drop the dress tends to do by the end of the night because it’s strapless—is not going to work for dancing.

And then there’s the bustle. I wanted something simple and easy. The traditional bustle that you see creates these little side wings. Do you see it in all of the above pictures?

Another option is doing a simple one point under bustle. This technique means I keep the pretty buttons, but lose some of the pretty skirt detail. We haven’t decided yet, but I may need something a bit more complex.

Fitting #2 is tomorrow. I’ve gotten the new miraculous bra from Victoria secret. I’ve challenged myself to say something about the fit of the skirt and how I want to make it more fitted. And I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I feel better about this dress at the end of fitting #2. After all, we’re running out of time.

Did you have similar issues with your first dress fitting?

You look lovely, but I hope you feel that way yourself soon!

Bustle suggestion - I can’t tell if the tulle/embroidered layer is separate from the bottom layer or attached, but if it is separate, you could do an under bustle on the bottom part and a standard bustle on the top part. That’s what I did on my dress, took the bulk out of the bustle while still showing off the detail. Good luck!

i think you look pretty fantabulous, hot wings! nothing blah at all. and remember that for the day of, your hair and makeup will be done, you’ll be wearing baubles, etc. i think for my first fitting i was kind of expecting to look like a “bride” because this was *my* dress, finally, after all this time waiting for it to come in, but nope–i was still a no-makeup, greasy face, and plain hair gal wearing a fancy dress. i had to focus on the dress, and after a few fittings i felt pretty wow.

Hang in there, Hot Wings! Your dress really is gorgeous, and definitely NOT blah. I love it!

My first fitting is TONIGHT and I have to say I am (pardon my French) freaked the f*ck out. I have nightmares that it won’t fit me right or something. Gah, scary!

Either way, you’re not alone. Speak your mind tomorrow and I am sure you and your dress will get along fine! :)

First of all, you look great in your dress! I think it’s natural to have that moment of panicked “Why did I pick this?” and I’m sure you’ll feel better after the second fitting. I picked the third dress I tried on and was absolutely obsessed with it…and still got a stomachache/anxiety at the first fitting!

Secondly, to all of the ladies having trouble finding a strapless bra in your size/color/etc — ask the seamstress! I could not find a bra to save my life and when I went to the first fitting, she fitted me for a bra & ordered it. It was waiting for me when I got to the second fitting. The price wasn’t that outrageous for a longline-type bra - $90 - and I didn’t have to go to every store on the planet trying to find my (what I thought was normal, but is apparently weird) size.

I really like @stephbolt: suggestion if that would work. I think you chose an awesome dress, it has just the right amount of everything going on.

To help with the length, could you add a little crinoline/tulle at the bottom? Fluff it out instead of chop it off.

Another bustle suggestion is to work with the simple over bustle. I too hated the wings but my seamstress did some manuvering and was able to place the bustle in a way that they no longer existed. I think you just need to ask her to try a few alternate ways to do the bustle.

You look beautiful in this dress. But if it isn’t fitting to your taste, definitely say something. I haven’t even gone looking for a dress yet and I’m terrified of the whole process because I’m a bit too nice to say anything too. I’ll be working on that.
But say how you feel and I hope you realize how great you look in it!

I think you look great! But I agree with you about making it tighter around the hips, I think that will really add to overall look and make your curves show!

If the bra doesn’t work out, I’d strongly suggest ordering cups in your size. I think with all that extra boning, you’re going to be uncomfortable, plus the dress just won’t be able to hug your curves in the way that you want.
I also do think the underbustle is way prettier. Mine has been softened by bustling the lace and under layers separately…they are both underbustled, but it makes it appear less bulky. Might work for your dress.
Don’t give up and DO say something! It’s a gorgeous dress but you need to make sure you get it looking the way that you want it to.

I think you look stunning certainly blah is on the opposite end of the spectrum from how you look… I think your seamstress needs to listen to your needs instead of giving her opinion..
If you wanted her to cut a hole in the center to reveal your bellybutton she should say “Sure that would look fabulous!”

;)

I love your dress. You look beautiful in it. When I first went to get my dress fitted the first place we took it said they couldn’t do it. The second place was amazing. They did a french bustle. It is similar to the underbustle, but there are a lot of little ribbons underneath to gradually pull the dress up. This allows the details on the bottom to be shown. I wish you luck with speaking up. I am like you and at first I was afraid to say much, but in the end spoke up and I am glad that I did.

You look beautiful, but you don’t look happy. Definitely say something - maybe she can pin it different ways to see what it would look like.

I think you look beautiful! I’m terrified about starting dress fittings - I worry my dress won’t fit right, so I totally understand how you feel!

Oh, HW - the dress looks lovely. Try it without the corset and see how the new bra works. And please speak up if it still isn’t to your liking!!

(Okay, so now I’m officially freaked out over something that won’t happen for at least another 6 months.)

Between my Spanx and strapress corset bra, I felt like I was going to suffocate! Best tip I got ” NO BRA!” - If your dress has boning up top, you don’t need one. The seamstress should be able to sew some cups in. - Def. the best decision I made in regards to my alterations. I was much more comfortable and felt less restricted on wedding day. — If the seamstress is doing the alterations, she should be able to make a cup for ya! - I’d press the issue or find someone who can do it. — Its beautiful! Good luck!

It’s just never perfect the first time, but I bet you’ll be a lot happier tomorrow! Definitely have her take it in in the hips if you feel it needs it. That’s one area I really had to fight to have taken in because it’s more work.

I got cups at D’Angelo in Mission Valley. They were Felina I think. $12! You could call and see if they have your size.

Goot luck!
