About Mrs. Plaid

My Biggest Wedding Decision

August 10th, 2010 @ 9:48 am by Mrs. Plaid

So I’m sure for most girls, the biggest decision they make during the wedding planning process is choosing the right dress or the right location. For me, it’s the cake. After all, I do decorate cakes for a living. So I ask you, why is it such a hard decision for me? I see cakes all day every day, yet I cannot decide.

So here’s what I’ve compiled so far (keep in mind none of the colors are right on these cakes; I was more attracted to the designs):

I love the nature-y, simple feel of this first cake.

I like the stripe-y pattern of these next two.

I really like how this cake is simple and detailed all at the same time.

I just thought this paisley pattern was nice and refreshing.

This is by far my favorite. I love the use of M & Ms. How fun, right?

So by now you can probably tell I like simple. But I’m also very indecisive, and I just can’t figure it out. It really shouldn’t be that tough.

So instead I’m moving on to toppers. I never thought I’d have a topper, but then I found a couple that I fell in love with, so we’ll see. Here they are:

I love this first one because it’s rustic and I can totally display this after the wedding in my house.

This one I like because it’s so us. I love to pinch Mr. Plaid’s butt, much to his dismay, I might add. Hehe :)

OK, so I left out a big part of this whole wedding cake thing. Here it goes: “Hi, my name’s Jenn and I decorate cakes for a living.”

And I am just crazy enough to think that I am going to be making my own wedding cake. I mean, I’m the first to admit that I am going to have trouble relinquishing control over design and execution. Ugh!

The general consensus is that I should not be worrying myself with decorating my own cake the day before my wedding. But I know I can totally conquer it. I’m trying to get on top of everything now so that I have time to make my cake the day before. However, I know my last couple days will probably be completely crazy, so I guess I need to deal with reality.

Two of my coworkers have graciously offered to make the cake for me for free, and I’ll still get to design it exactly the way I want. That’s really the only other option I’d consider. I’m not about to pay for something I can do myself.

However, I’m making the cake, not anyone else. That’s all there is to it!

Is/was there anything in your wedding that you insisted doing even though everyone warned you it’d be a mess? Maybe I’m the only crazy one!

Hey Plaid Gal..
I thought your first option (coworkers make it) sounded pretty sane..
I think your final decision (making it yourself) is very gutsy…

Here is why I think you will succeed: You do this for a living. You’re not an amature who bakes cupcakes once a month.. or cookies for christmas.. you make these types of cakes regularly. Plus having control over your cake sounds pretty high on your priority list. Do it girl!

I’m totally with you on refusing on giving something up… for me it was all things paper/design. I’m a graphic designer and refuse to pay someone else to do what I can do (what I’ve been trained to do for Pete’s sake!) - especially since I know that it wouldn’t be exactly like I wanted if I had someone else do it (*cough*since I’m a control freak*cough*)… So save-the dates, invites, menus, programs, table numbers, banners, signs, guest book…. If it can be designed, I’m doing it… My family thinks I’m nuts but thus far, I’ve managed to make everyone eat their words lol

I have faith in you girl! I did not have the guts to do this, but since you have the experience and know what it takes I say you are gonna rock it!

Hee hee! I have the “love pinch” topper on the front of my wedding binder. We’re not using it, but I think it’s so adorable! I LOVE that paisley-patterned cake, and the pink-striped one (the 3rd one down).

I would be careful with the Willowtree figurine. My cousin received the same one as a wedding gift and it is rather heavy.

I think you can do it, if you budget your time wisely! It will be really special to get to do your own cake, a memorable experience, for sure!

I have the willow tree cake topper version (slightly smaller and on a base) if you want it, no charge. I really don’t do trinkets and figurines, so it would just stay packed away in a box somewhere, which I’m trying to avoid as we just moved into our first home. I would love to see if used in another wedding! PM me your address if you want it!

I totally think you can pull this off depending on how well you can *really* be done with the million other things by the time it comes to work on the cake. Recall that three years ago, Mrs. Blueberry made all of the desserts for her elaborate dessert reception. So it can be done!

As long as you’re organized and schedule your pre-wedding time wisely, I’m sure you’ll have no problem making your cake yourself (you are a professional, after all :) It might be a good idea to let your co-workers know that you might ask for help at the last minute (just in case you’re short on time or a little too stressed) because it never hurts to have a plan B.
My favorites are the stripey-pattern and the butt-pinch topper (and it’s subtle enough to not be super noticeable to guests who arent in on the joke!)

I did my own bouquet (and all 6 of my bridesmaids’ bouquets) on the day before my wedding! I think I did a great job (if I say so myself… muah ha ha) and it was a huge sense of pride on the day of the wedding. You can do it! Just be sure that you have enough time to prep for the rehearsal on the days leading up to that day so that you only have one task on your list, that will help decrease the insanity!

I have had the M&M cake pic as inspiration for years (I decorate cakes too (in my first career, and now on the side)). Please let me know if you ever figure out how to get the M&Ms on straight–it has eluded me thus far!

I am currently trying to decide whether or not to make my wedding dessert myself. We’re going with a pie bar in stead of a cake because we’re pie people, and when we decided that my first thought was “I’ll make the pies myself” because I make pies as well as anyone whose pie I’ve ever eaten. Plus, store bought pies are generally much lower quality than homemade, and as much as I would love to search VT for pie that measures up to our exacting standards, I almost think it would be easier to diy it. Plus, then I could integrate family recipes like a 5+ generations old cherry recipe and my grandmother’s chocolate silk.

We’re having a small wedding, but I would still need 8-10 pies to make it work, and that’s a lot of baking to do in the day or two before our wedding. I’m sure my one aunt would help, and I have a cousin who’s a pastry chef, but I’m reticent to take on the responsibility myself. If it worked it would be a wonderful way to showcase something both families have in common–we’re all pie people, except my little bro, but he’ll eat the chocolate silk–but if it didn’t it could be a mess.

You can do it! When you mentioned your name was “Jenn and I decorate cakes for a living” I thought perhaps you could be this Jen– http://www.jenscakes.com who is a very popular wedding cake baker out her in California ;-)

Thank y’all for the encouraging words. I can’t to show y’all what I come up with!

@Pwitty: That’s a great idea to keep my co-workers on possible stand-by. I’ll have to see if they’re interested.

@Mrs. Pin Cushion: You used to be a cake decorator? That’s awesome. As for that M&M cake, I have no idea how she did it. It’s probably super tedious and I will someday figure it out and make that cake.

@karenbme: I totally think you should go for it. Just be very organized about it and it should be fine. Good luck!

@bridesmomma: That’s not me. I do have a website, but I’m in Texas.

I haven’t run into anything yet that I will “have to do” but it’s still early for me! I can however totally understand about wanting to do this for yourself & only trusting yourself with the task. Good luck & you can do it! Also, great cake topper ideas!

I have that Willow Tree figure, it was a gifts from a member of my parents’ church. We aren’t trinket people at all, so if you’d like it we’ll send it to you.

@ebmarshall: Thank you so much for your offer. Another member actually offered me hers a couple days ago and I already took her up on the offer. Thanks though!

We chose the willow tree figure for our cake topper. We are so happy that we found it. We saw a card that depicted the other cake topper and my FI and I loved it. It would probably have been too non-traditional for us though for a cake topper.
