Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!

A Focal Point

August 11th, 2010 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Glasses

I’ve been stalking my Google reader for cabaret-style seating and a focal point. We need something to set our stage—to frame our vows, so to speak. If we don’t find something, this will be our backdrop:

Not hot. We need something on theme, not too expensive, and DIYable. Most outside, DIY focal points I’ve seen around the interweb are in the form of a chuppah.

While chuppah come in all different shapes and sizes, I don’t think it’s right for us.

I vision a trellis or two. Covered in paper cranes. Yes?

Another plus: we could use it as a backdrop for a faux Polaroid photobooth. We are hopping on that bandwagon and toying with the idea of a photobooth! I’m almost 80% sold on this trellis + paper crane idea, but there are a few other options floating in the back of my mind.

I can see this plan getting a little pricey, but picture a cute aisle like this:

We could hang paper cranes instead of flags to tie the look together. We’ve been debating doing the thousand paper cranes thing and decided we’d only do it if we had some use for them. This would tooootally be worth it, right?

So pretty. If I could have anything, I’d want this. But arbors are expensive. And chandeliers are expensive. If, by some miracle, we are under budget this will be a possibility.

A much easier, and possibly cheaper option I’ve found is this:

Visually beautiful and easy to set up. Depending on the type of umbrella, the look and feel they create can be modified.

I’m sure this won’t be the end of the focal-point search. One of the great things about keeping a wedding blog is seeing how inspiration and ideas change over time, and in the execution stage, comparing inspiration to reality. I’m looking forward to seeing the end result!

If you are having an outdoor wedding, what’s your focal point like?

Do they have an IKEA by where your parents live? They have chandeliers very similar to the one in the photo that are really inexpensive. And, other really cool, fun, modern hanging light fixtures that would play off well against the cranes. You could even build a scaffolding out of PVC pipes on the cheap and do draping to hide the plastic, and have the cranes along the draping with a light fixture in the middle.

I second (or third) was PP said. But I also actually really like the umbrellas. And those can ALWAYS be re-used!

This is my biggest struggle with our outdoor ceremony! I keep trying to find something that doesn’t look “out of place” in the rustic environment, but stands out enough. Keep us posted on what you decide!

My fiance is Japanese American and I’m folding 1000 cranes for the wedding. We’re getting married in a brick courtyard, so for the ceremony we will have two tall vases with manzanite branches framing us, and from the branches we’ll hang some of the cranes!

You could totally build that arbor for cheap. Some lumber, hammer and nails and you’d be all set. You can totally DIY that. And apparently you could find a chandelier for cheap by listening to your commenters. We’ll get you this focal point yet! ;)

Love the cranes and trellis idea. You might also thing about using those antique, globe balloons as focal points. We’re going to be doing that since we’re getting married in front of huge windows. You can coordinate them with whatever colors you’re using for your wedding, and they’re great props for pics later!

I think the cranes and trellis sound great. There is a board bee who recently got married and decorated her ceremony with cranes and poms. It looked gorgeous!

I think renting or buying those umbrellas wouldn’t be as cheap as you think. What if you make the cranes into garlands and hang them from a frame to serve as a backdrop. Basically, build a doorframe out of wood and stand it up where the alter is going to be. Then hang strands of the cranes down like a beaded curtain.

Martha Stewart has some great DIY ideas that you may be able to use. Here are a couple: http://tinyurl.com/28o4zcm http://tinyurl.com/2fvlc63 http://tinyurl.com/2g5zamh http://tinyurl.com/23qam3o

Ohhh, I really like all your inspiration ideas! The trellis would probably be pretty easy too, and I’ve seen them for cheap at Target.

We are doing two flower arrangements as our focal point and they will be on either side of us. We found large, brown resin planters on sale and are going to have our florist fill them with white hydrangeas (huge flowers and will create a big mound for less $$) and have curly willow branches coming out the top. I am debating having her attach orchids or another white flower to the branches. We are placing each arrangement on a 42 inch tall cocktail table with a 24 inch round top, which we will cover in a nice linen. The arragements will be taller than us and dramataic, but simple and easy to move. It took me MONTHS to figure this out, sadly, so I know your dillema. :)

@crayfish: @kaity: Thank you for the Ikea suggestion! I will look at their options when we get back to America.

@HeatherMH: That sounds gorgeous! And a great way to use your cranes!

@chrispygal: Ooooh! I loooove curly willow brnaches. Your arrangements sound amazing.

Thank you to everyone for the advice and ideas. Truly supportive hive! Love love love!
