Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
About Mrs. Husky

UGH!

August 11th, 2010 @ 5:29 pm by Mrs. Husky

Last night, the Husky home was very tense. There was anger and frustration. Yelling. Even knives. That’s right: we were working on invitations…

I would first like to state, for the record, that I positively adore our invites. Now that we have that out of the way, I will next tell you that you should never-ever-not-even-consider-for-a-minute ask your fiance to design the invitations if he meets the following criteria:

  • Mechanical Engineer: Applies the principles of physics and material sciences for analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems (via Wikipedia). The key words we’re looking at here are analysis, design, manufacturing.
  • Artistic: Mr. H would probably be unhappy with me if I shared his work with you, but I will tell you that he has amazing talent. I so loved a pair of paintings he did, that he created the last in the set for my birthday, 4 years after completing the first two.
  • Recently Unemployed: Lots of time to analyze, design, ma—-wait, wait, more analyze, more design…a little bit more analyze, then schedule a craft night to put all of his minions to work manufacturing.

The big reveal will come after the invites start to arrive (which, if I’m honest, might be two days after never), but I can tell you for now that creating the invitations is a 15+ step process. This does not include printing, addressing envelopes, stamping, or stuffing. It does, however, include gluing, measuring, cutting and licking. Witness MOH Husky:

(personal photo)

We’ve done 2 craft nights so far for the invites, and we have another scheduled next week. After that, I think we’ll only need another 15 or so to get them done. I’m actually only sort of exaggerating…

Have any of your projects taken a lot more time and (wo)man-power than you expected? How many “craft nights” did your invites take?

Oh Miss Husky, I share your pain!! Your postcard/pic captures my sentiments exactly! I’ve spent more than 35+ hours and 10 trips to the craft store already worrying about my invitations. I stayed up till 2 am last night working on them! I love my invitations too but I’m just so ready for them to be in the mail..

I feel your pain too! Ours took 3 weeks of a couple hours every day at my parents’ kitchen table, sweating in equatorial Indonesian weather!

I plan on hoarding all the invitation “fun” for myself. The boy will be brought in to narrow the final field of winners (from which there will be no wrong choice) and potentially stuffing, stamping, labeling, ie anything that doesn’t directly involve design, just labor.

Ooomg tell me about it, sing it sister, etc. I worked on addressing and assembling invitations all weekend and I took Monday off. MOH and Mr. T helped. I’m only about halfway done. When I wasn’t sleeping, I was working on them. Hence my MIA-ness around here for the most part. Good luck with the rest!! I can’t wait to see them!

I did my invites in April - my (now) husband was working nights, 4 nights on, one off (he works at a nuclear power plant and this was a scheduled outage, which messes with everyone’s schedule).
So I definitely had plenty of time to play with them! (I kept thinking of more things I wanted to do - ended up with a DIY map, belly bands, bows and envelope liners.) Kept me busy while he was working!

Yes, projects like these always take longer than you think. My fiance and I are actually both mechanical engineers and he told me the rule of thumb is to estimate how long a project will take and multiply that by pi (3.14). That’s about right since I thought our invites would take one day and they took about 4 full days. But our invites turned out great (and have a magnet!), and I’m sure yours did too!

Hahaha, Mr. C is a mechanical engineer too….there’s a reason why I did all our paper designing!

I think the closest that my husband came to losing patience with my obsession over making every single thing absolutely perfect was when we were making our invitations. It took forever. Forever and ever. There was always another step I wanted to add. There were definitely people who glanced at them for three seconds, but we got enough raving compliments that I felt it was all worthwhile! (My husband may not feel the same way. ) :)

First off my FH is an engineered and also artistic. That combination can be incredible annoying at points though I love the man to death. Just so concerned about the smallest detail. Second, we made our own STD and Invitations. He designed both. In the process I wanted to kill him. I got kicked off of cutting, mating and stamping. I LOVE both my save the dates and invites but gee golly it was painful to get to. I am so proud of all the work that my FH put into them and how they really do represent us. My dad will tell you it took over 400 hours just for the save the date - weeks, weeks and weeks for the invite - they went out about a month late. Oh well they are out now and everyone loves so it will be worth it in the end - you just have to survive getting through it

@Ms.MochaFreeze: multiple craft store trips? Check. :)

@TheFutureMcBride: Ha! I laughed out loud at your comment, and then told Mr. H about it

@Mrs. Pretzel: we learned this the hard way, when at least $50 worth of materials were damaged by our, um, “less sober” friends. :)

@Anna: “I got kicked off of cutting, mating and stamping.” - cracks. me. up. Mr Husky tried to limit my access at first, but then got so sick of doing them himself!
