Blood Money

August 11th, 2010 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Plaid

Weddings are expensive. Everyone knows that or at least has found out as they’ve been planning, right?

Well, my job doesn’t pay very much, so I’ve been looking for ways to make some extra cash. My friend and co-MOH, L, recently added two to her family—two dogs, I mean. Oscar and Mason are their names, and they are absolutely adorable beagle mixes. I love them to pieces.

Blood Money : wedding austin budget Masonos

She has given me the opportunity to take care of them in the afternoons since their little puppy bladders won’t last til she gets home at 6 pm or later. She pays me to play with her dogs. I couldn’t ask for a better job. Plus, with this money, I have a little pocket money to spend on breakfast tacos and Dr. Peppers. :) (For anyone who knows me, these two things are very important staples in my diet.)

But on to the name of this post—my blood money. I have been donating plasma for almost a year now. It’s better than donating blood because you get paid to donate. You get paid around $20 a visit and can do it twice a week. It’s seems kinda crazy, but it’s not bad; you can bring your laptop and watch a movie or surf the web. So I am literally paying for parts of this wedding with “blood money.” If you’re interested, here’s where I go: BioLife Plasma. There’s a little informational video on their site so you can see how it works.

Have you found unconventional ways to pay for your wedding?

Oh bless you Miss. Plaid. I pass out at the sight or mention of needles. Otherwise, I would do this as well!

I get way too queasy to donate plasma. Plus, where I live, a lot of the people who donate plasma are total creepers so I’m too scared to go in! I also heard that it gives you a permanent bump on your arm, so once again, I’m too much of a scaredy-cat to do it!

I sometimes do medical MRI research to make extra cash. I’d donate plasma but I lived overseas in the UK for too long so I might have mad cow disease!! lol. no its serious. there’s no test to test it. (um not the best description) but yeah. I say way to go!

I’ve always wanted to be able to donate plasma, but I can’t! :( Boo!

I totally agree with other posters…there’s not enough money in the world to get me near a needle (unless it’s an absolute necessity) - but good for you if you can stand it.

I’d play with puppies for money! Where do we sign up? :)

I donated plasma for years, but haven’t done it over a year now. I could only use my left arm because it felt weird using my right, so therefore I have a nice big hole in my inner arm (near my elbow)!

I used to get $60 a week to do it, so it was a no-brainer. The only reason I quit was because the local center closed. I watched so many movies when I was there, haha. We were never allowed to bring laptops though! And definitely no cell phones.

My unconvential way of paying for my wedding is selling on eBay. I’ve probably made $400 so far.

Sadly, I cannot donate blood. Lame, I know.

Um, FI and his friends used to do this in college. Apparently it was considered a good way for students to make money. He never had a real job so I guess it was decent fun money.

There is actually a plasma center about 2 blocks away from my apartment and I always joke that I will go in there and try to donate, maybe I should actually check it out. $20 per week would support my rock climbing habit!

Wow, that’s a really cool idea. I am in the processed of donating my eggs. The way I see it, you help a family reach their dream of having a child and it’ll help pay for my wedding at the same time. Win, win!

It’s not too bad. Funny thing, I hate blood. It makes me sick to my stomach. I just have to tell myself that it’s not real and I’m somehow able to convince myself of that and everything’s ok. Weird, I know.

@October4040: I wish I could do that, but I don’t have anything of value to sell. And yeah I’ve got a whole in my arm too. I sorta looks like an heroin addict.

@slicey19: You should totally do it. It’s different then donating blood, because you don’t get fatigued afterwards so you could go rock climbing right after if you wanted to!

This is s finny because FI and I both did tis and I always called it my blood money too. It isn’t as bad as most people think it is. I always got to watch cash cab, and I always went fast. I would race other regulars and I would be done in less then an hour.

Wow, would have never thought to get extra wedding cash from donating blood! I’m sure every little bit helps though! And I really wish someone would have paid me to play with their dogs!

I commend you Miss Plaid.. I understand you are donating for some side loot, but plasma is not only important for hospitals distributing plasma to those in need, but also really crucial for developing drugs…

I know some drug companies that give cafeteria giftcards to employees who donate blood or plasma for research.

I wish!! I donate blood and plasma down here in Australia and it is against the law to get paid for it!
Good on you though, I think if they paid people here then they would have much less of a blood/plasma shortage and they wouldnt have to spend so much on advertising!!
Well done!
