Mrs. Sand Dollar's Picture
Mrs. Sand Dollar, Houston Age and Occupation: 24, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical Technician Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: MacLean Park About Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!
About Mrs. Sand Dollar

I had big dreams. Plans of a two-tier, simply decorated cake with a handmade cake topper. It looked like this:

I hate you, cake topper. You got damaged in the big move and now you’re all floppy. And I’m just kind of tired of you anyway. You’re just a little too home-made looking. So now what?

  1. I’m reducing the amount of cake. I decided to make a budget move, and make the bottom tier of the cake fake. I’ll still decorate it, but I figure I’ll save lots of moolah that way, and can easily get the height I want.
  2. I’ll make the top tier. It should be easy-peasy (or my famous last words!). I’ll whip it up the week before. How hard can one little 8″ tier be?
  3. I need some icing options. For you baking whizzes, what withstands heat the best? I know buttercream is out. Fondant may be a little shaky. Do you have any suggestions?
  4. I’ll revamp the design. I’m thinking something like this:

I Just Can't Be With You Like This, Anymore : wedding cake decor sand dollar Wedding04 wedding04

Basically I’m going to cut  something out with the Cricut cake and slap it on there! I’m tempted to buy Sure Cuts A Lot so I can use designs from our wedding invitations and programs. It’s a possibility. But as you can tell, the cake really doesn’t matter to me. It’s not a big deal. I don’t like eating it (as in, ever), and I really wish Mr. SD and his mama would let me get by with just pies. But nooooo, it’s not a wedding without cake! And as crazy non-traditional I’m being with the rest, I’m giving in on this one. And I’d be ashamed of myself if I let it suck. So here I am, just under 7 weeks out, rethinking my entire cake decision. Sigh.

Did something you planned early on get tired and old once your planning progressed? Did you just live with it or toss it out and plan something new?

Ummm, not that this is really related to your post, but now I have “Alejandro” in my head. :)

Additionally, I love, love, love that second square cake! I’m sure you’ll do an awesome job.

Yes, Thanks to a change in venue (circumstances beyond our control) and the new longer-time frame that resulted, my theme and colors have been evolving. It’s been a costly issue to have. =(

We ordered tasteful bamboo candle holders as favors initially. Then we found our Nintendo cake topper… and cancelled the bamboo candles and ordered the more expensive “mario mushroom candy tins” … pricey, but so darned cute I couldn’t even handle it! Thankfully the bamboo candles were backordered and we didn’t have to pay a cancellation fee. PHEW!

I’m absolutely in love with the 2-tier square cake that you posted… you may have just changed my mind about MY cake design!

Good luck! Our first band fell through at 5 weeks and our second at less than 2, so it’s three days before the wedding and we have nothing! Haha. Good thing I’m not worried about it. Just want to marry McGroom

P.S. Where did my 4.5 month engagement go?

I love your cake topper–I think it’s so unique and doesn’t look homemade at all!

Aww I love your topper. No icing is really heat friendly. Technically buttercream would be the best, fondant would definitely be better. Just watch how long it sits out. And I love that second cake. PS. I just got a Cake Cricut for my first wedding present and I’m totally intimidated. Tips?

I’m a little bummed you won’t be using your cake topper - after seeing your handiwork, I was tempted to fire my hippos! Regardless, I like the others you posted. And I love your cricut-magic!

My mom says the same thing about it not being a wedding without a wedding cake! She’s really rather dramatic about it. If this is the one wedding detail she’s going to care so much about, I’ll let her have it.

I do really like your homemade cake topper- what a great reflection of your relationship!

I really loved your topper. What a shame it got all floppy on you. :(

Here is a buttercream recipe used by cake decorators all over the country. Many many reviews by said decorators saying this particular recipe holds up to high heat and humidity: http://cakecentral.com/recipes/6992/indydebis-crisco-based-buttercream-icing

Having a two year engagement I have constantly been worried about this happening! Especially with the dress.. so I waited over a year (14 months actually) before going dress shopping.. I’m just too worried I will get something I am totally in love with in the moment but then not want a few months later..

Okay, I’m not going to lie, I skipped over the post at first to say I love you for your Lady Gag reference. Yes. I just can’t be with you like this, anymore. Alejandro!

Also, no joke, I’m watching the Food Network right now, and they are making Sand Dollar Sugar Cookies. Whoa coincidence.

Hi, there! Can you please remove the last cake image from this post in your blog? The cake shop that claims to have designed this cake stole the image from our website…. not nice! If you’d like to still use the image, we’d love that, but please do know that we designed the cake and would like to retain credit for that.

Please use the cake topper and save it as an heirloom. It is incredible.

@StudioCake: Do you have a link I could replace the source with? So sorry about the image. But I’d love to keep it as inspiration, so let’s give credit where credit is due!

I baked a two tier cake last weekend using “High-Humidity Buttercream” and Marshmallow fondant. It held up well. I’m in Florida and it was heat index of 107 plus 95% humidity. I am sure you would be fine with that combination. I’d be glad to share recipes.
