Find Your Seat!

August 12th, 2010 @ 10:39 am by Mrs. Starfish

When we started planning our starfish nuptials, I knew for sure I wanted to use starfish for the escort cards. I’ve seen quite a few photos of these and love the idea!

I know it may seem predictable, since we’ve used starfish on our save the dates and invitations, but I think it will be fun and new to our guests.

I’ve seen these images all over the internet, but I’ve never actually seen it at a wedding. So while it may seem unoriginal to me, I think it may be fun and new to some of our guests.

I think sometimes as a bride, you search the internet and wedding magazines for ideas and become immune to details. It takes much more to “wow” another bride with a unique idea than it does to “wow” your average wedding guest.

An example is candy buffets. I absolutely love them, but I figured everyone knows these are super trendy at weddings. When Sister Starfish had one at her wedding last October, you would have thought she came up with the idea herself! Guests loved it! They actually still talk about it almost a year later! It was a huge hit and seemed totally unique.

So when it comes to details at your wedding, go with what you love, even if you think it may be too trendy or unique. Chances are if you love it, your guests will, too!

Are you including any trends at your wedding? Do you think the trend will seem new and exciting to your guests or more of a been there, done that, seen it kind of thing?

I agree!! I’ve seen many photo booths at weddings online, but have yet to actually see one at any of my friends weddings. I think we start to forget that our guests are not on wedding blogs everyday like we are :)

I feel so jaded… I’ve seen both a candy buffet and a photobooth at a wedding two years ago! But still, I take your point. We do become immune to certain details after a while in a way that our friends and family will never be.

So true. A friend of our family is a framer and offered to do a “sign the mat” picture for us and then frame it afterwards. Well, as old as THAT trend is, there were still people at our wedding who thought it was new and loved it. And I can’t believe how good it turned out and how much I love it now, even though I wasn’t all that excited about it when the offer was presented to us and we felt obligated to say yes. You have to chose things that make YOU happy and can’t even worry about being trendy, unoriginal, out of style, etc.

We did starfish escort cards and I loved them and so did the guests - here’s a pic of what we did - http://www.projectwedding.com/photo/list/kitty25kat25?photo_to_show=789664&thumbs_page=13

We are doing a candy buffet, which I have never seen done at a wedding, but have seen done to death all over the internet.

I love your starfish! I think it’s a lot like the “brides know it, but not other people.” Do what you want. I can’t wait for pictures.

They look really pretty, but please don’t use real starfish; they’re often all taken from one place and that can lead to localised extinctions which affect the whole ecosystem :(

You can get fake ones (often made of plaster of paris or similar) in many decorating and craft stores, at least here in the uk, and probably also in the US.

Very true about seeing the trends all over wedding blogs. I have never been to a wedding with a candy buffet, photo booth, flip flop basket etc. I definitely have a hard time remembering that not everyone is reading wedding blogs all day like I am.

I think the starfish escort cards are perfect and agree that they will most likely be new to your guests!

Starfish, that’s adorable!! I love it! I think you’re SO right about how much we brides might think something is overused/overdone, but our guests are not nearly as hip to the wedding jive as we are! They’ll love it and think it’s adorable!

Thank you so much! I actually struggle with this issue a lot as I’m getting into the full swing of planning.. what will the guests think is overdone, been there done that, etc? But along with your post I am starting to realize I need to just do what I want because then I will be happy & of course “they” say that happiness is contagious!

We are doing trendy cupcakes, trendy paper cranes, trendy dessert bar… and my friends and family are excited. I do think as brides we are obviously way more aware of wedding trends than the average Joe singleton.

We used starfish and sand dollars for our escort cards too! The guests loved them and so did the waitstaff, it helped them determine who had what for their entree! Sand dollars were for beef and starfish were for fish!
