A Cake for Mr. Plaid

August 12th, 2010 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Plaid

Since I talked about our (potentially) gorgeous cake in the last post, I figured I should talk about what I plan on doing for Mr. Plaid’s special cake.

And let me just say that until I moved to Texas four years ago, I had never even heard of a groom’s cake. I thought the bride and groom just shared the wedding cake. I was so naive. Haha. :)

So once I embraced the whole groom’s cake idea (and honestly why wouldn’t I take the opportunity to make another cake), I started to brainstorm. I almost immediately thought: ZOMBIES!!!

He is super into zombies. Zombie movies, zombie video games (I have to confess I’m quite the shot when it comes to killing some zombies), zombie anything. But how do I make an awesome zombie-themed groom’s cake? Simple! What do zombies love most?

Brains! I’m going to make a giant brain cake. Then I plan on molding all sorts of little zombies to climb on the brain, eat the brain, crawl across the table toward the brain…you get the picture. I may even throw in a few themed zombies, for instance: super heroes, Star Wars characters, etc.

Awesome, right? So I figured, cool, we’ll serve this at the less formal, more intimate rehearsal dinner. Wrong. Mr. Plaid wants it at the wedding. So his brain cake will be sitting next to our gorgeous lacy wedding cake. Haha, it’ll be a nice juxtaposition at least.

Are you having a groom’s cake for your groom? How did you decide what to get, and what will it look like?

OMG! This is hilarious. Did you see the zombie cake episode of Ace of Cakes? The zombies were eating the brains out of a cake bust that resembled the hubby! I think it was a birthday cake, though, but still hilarious.

We’re doing a Nascar-themed groom’s cake, complete with a crystal car of his favorite driver, Jimmie Johnson. As an aside, at what age do you have to start spelling Jimmy with a “y” instead of an “ie” if you want to be taken seriously as a man?

We’re doing the cake at the rehearsal dinner because our wedding cake will be surrounded by the dessert buffet.

Hah, I wanted to do the same thing for my FI but he thinks a groom’s cake is overdoing it :( I might do this for an anniversary though, because it just sounds like too much fun! I’m leaning towards zombie cake toppers, and I know I want one of our wedding party pictures to be all of us walking like old school zombies :P I think I’m even adding them to the ceremony “until death or zombification do us part” :D

My FI is from the South and a groom’s cake was one of the first things his mom asked me about. We are going with his favorite college team mascot and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

The brain sounds like a fun cake! We’re doing an XBOX 360 with other gaming controls for his other systems.

I did a Geek Squad Punch Buggy at our Rehearsal Dinner for my groom. We have been playing punch buggy for 3 years and coined the Geek Squad as the “mother of all buggies”- it came out fantastic!

mmm brains! I really want to make a groom’s cake in the shape of a giant ben and jerry’s chubby hubby container since it’s Mr. L’s fav icecream, but don’t know if I’ll have time right before the wedding…so I was thinking to make him a bachelor party cake instead.

@Jennifer5642: I didn’t see that episode. I’m gonna have to DVR it. Maybe it’ll give me some ideas!

@arenyth: I might just totally have to steal that zombie walking picture idea. You’re brilliant!

@LindsayJeff: What is a Geek Squad Punch Buggy? Pictures?

@Miss Locket: OMG…you should totally do it. I don’t think it’d be that hard. Check out this bachelor party cake I made for a friend a couple months ago: http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=43063914&id=5510993&ref=fbx_album

That is AMAZING, and would have been beyond perfect for my zombie-obsessed husband. It was a hell of a lot cheaper, though, just to get a cake with his college logo on it! That’s awesome that you’re making it yourself, can’t wait to see it.

Yes! Who doesn’t love a groom’s cake? Haha I figure this makes him less likely to argue about the actual wedding cake. My guy LOVES Superman & hockey so we’re going to do a comboed theme with his favorite player wearing a Superman cape as a topper I think.. should def. be interesting!

Funny you say these things…..
Um. We are only having one cake, and its more “groom’s cake” than wedding cake.
We love video games and cartoons. So our cake will be an 8 bit nintendo with a wii sitting on top. Then our cake toppers will be classice (and some modern) couples like Mickey and Minnie, Daisy and Donald, Ron and Hermione, Wall*E and Eve, etc.
Silly, but very us!
