Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
About Mrs. Husky

I always thought Mr. Husky would seek the advice of my sister &/or mother when it came time to buy my ring. So I was sure to occasionally remind them both what I wanted:

Put a Ring on It – but Just One, Please. : wedding denver rings 1 1

(source)

A princess-cut solitaire set in platinum. Classic & beautiful. But when Mr. Husky proposed, he hadn’t sought the advice of either of them.

Instead, he’d picked out a ring that I wanted even more than the ring above:

Put a Ring on It – but Just One, Please. : wedding denver rings 2 2

(source)

It’s perfect for me – the diamond is of high quality, but it’s just the right size and style to not seem flashy. And even more than the ring, I love that Mr. Husky was able to pick out something so very “ME” without having to find out from somebody else what that was.

The only problem with this ring is finding it a wedding band. I love the side view:

Put a Ring on It – but Just One, Please. : wedding denver rings 3 3

(source)

The problem is that the prongs of the ring stick out farther than the band of the ring. When we visited a local jeweler, I tried on a few options for the band. A plain band can’t fit directly against the engagement setting, and it looks kind of forced. But the curved band had too large of a curve, and left a gap between the setting and the band.

Put a Ring on It – but Just One, Please. : wedding denver rings 4 4

(source)

So I decided to go without – sort of. See, I love the way my engagement ring looks. I think this is primarily due to the symmetrical-simplicity of the design. Adding a band to it just made it look clunky. But with as active as Mr. H and I are, I also don’t want to wear my ring into certain situations – rock climbing, camping, crabbing – for fear of damaging or losing it. So I present to you my wedding ring:

Put a Ring on It – but Just One, Please. : wedding denver rings 5 5

(source)

This is not my actual ring – I haven’t yet gotten around to photographing mine. It’s similar, but mine is quite a bit thinner than this one. During the ceremony, we will use both rings. After that, I will switch between the two of them!

I know this wouldn’t work for some – we have certainly gotten some strange looks from people who think that without a wedding band, it will look as if I’m not actually married. But Mr. Husky completely agrees with my decision, and we both think anything on my left hand ring finger sends the same message.

Did you have trouble finding a band to match your engagement ring? What did you end up choosing?

Love your ring!

I have a nontraditional setting that just wouldn’t mesh with ANY band. Also, I love the way it looks on its own. Just as I was in the middle of trying to find a suitable solution, my grandmother asked if I would be willing to accept *her* wedding band, which was also her grandmother’s. WOW. So, I’ll be wearing my engagement ring on my left hand and her wedding band on my right.

I had a few issues wedding band shopping for a similar reason to yours. I went with a bend in the ring :)

What kind of material is that ring made out of?

I have a similar band to your engagement ring, only with an emerald cut. I have a very thin eternity band, seriously thinner than any other I’ve seen, and even though there is a gap, it is much smaller than any other gaps left by some other rings, and I like that the teeny diamonds don’t compete with the emerald cut, since my e-ring is far from blinged out. It was important for me to get a ring that I could wear on its own. I’m also planning on getting a super cheap thin white gold or silver band to the tune of $50 or less for traveling and when we’re active since right now I generally leave ‘em all at home. I’m pretty sure I’m the only girl ever to go on a honeymoon and leave the rings at home, but that’s what I did. I didn’t want to bring it, do something active, and leave it at the hotel at the mercy of the staff, you know?

Both of your rings are beautiful!

We had the same problem with my engagement ring, so I’ll be doing the exact same thing as you. I’ll probably wear the wedding band solo more often, just because the e-ring is a delicate gemstone and I’m paranoid about it getting damaged!

My ring is kind of interesting with lots of tiny diamonds on the inside “under” the main diamonds so we asked the jeweler if there was a matching wedding band but since there’s not we did some investigating & found a ring I love that doesn’t cover up the engagement ring diamonds :-)

Don’t let other people dictate what you should do- even though I personally want to have both on me & displayed at all times I can understand that will not be the case for everyone!

I love the notch in my wedding ring, similar to the one you show above. Both of my rings were custom made by a jeweler that’s a family friend, so I got exactly what I wanted. They are thicker in the back and they never move. My engagement ring is very similar to yours.

how cool! and i LOVE solitaires! my e-ring is a solitaire and my band is an “enhancer” that “hugs” the solitaire to make it look like (from the top) it’s one ring, not two. :)

I was in the EXACT same place as you. My marquise solitaire had low set prongs and I don’t dig the curve bands, but I wanted to wear my rings together.

I ended up getting mine reset into a setting that put the stone higher but also has a split shank so I feel like it looks more balanced. Just got it back this week and I love it (pics on my profile). :)

I had a similar issue with my Tiffany ring that is similar to yours. I opted to go with the simple platinum band and although there is a TINY gap between the rings, because the band is simple, the gap is not noticeable at all.

thats a fabulous idea! Luckily my fiance picked out a ring that i think will look fine with any kind of band, but before he gave it to me I wondered about what I would do in that same situation.

my main concern is that it won’t be symmetrical when I pair my ring with a wedding band. I hate it when things aren’t symmetrical……

A good friend of mine wears a beautiful emerald cut solitaire as her wedding ring. Sure it’s different - but it’s her and it’s beautiful!!

I also didn’t want to get a curved band to go around my e-ring, but I actually loved the look of putting a straight band next to it and leaving a gap between them. I do love wearing just the band sometimes though (I’m doing it right now), and I know several people who have a thicker band like your wedding band and only wear that all the time.

Great idea. I have an engagement ring and a wedding band, but I am also getting a simple band to wear with camping, hiking, roller coaster riding…ya know. The usual :)

My ring doesn’t really go with other bands either so we decided to go without! Since I got my fiance an engagement ring too (why should girls have all the fun?) we both have a ring and we decided we didn’t need another band.

I think it looks beautiful! And I decided to forgo the wedding band too. A few people have asked if I’m engaged or married, but it’s never a big deal. I love that you have an alternate ring for your adverture-y activities.

I love the idea of having a backup ring if you’ve got a nicer engagement one. Someday we plan to upgrade my current set, but I’ll always use it for my more “industrial” pursuits!

I wear my e-ring alone as well! I’m now wearing my super simple plain wedding band because I keep catching my e-ring on Baby Avo when I change his diaper. Two years and I’ve only been asked if I’m married a few times. Now that I have a baby I don’t think anyone would dare to do so :)

My cousin had that problem and chose to wear the e-ring on her other hand — because she felt the w-band needed to be on the ring finger of the left hand. Just a suggestion on how someone else wore both rings
