Painting My Face

August 13th, 2010 @ 1:41 pm by Miss Handbag

Can you keep a secret? You can? OK, good!

I used to be a tomboy. Yup. All the way up to my senior year. My mom is not girlie at all, and I was raised with two brothers. So baggy jeans, t-shirts, and a ponytail was my everyday look.

Seven years later, I am no longer a tomboy and am quite girlie. I love girlie clothes, jewelry, handbags, shoes, shopping, etc.; everything BUT makeup. I still hate it. I hate the way it feels on my face, uck. It makes me feel like someone painted my face. My daily routine is wash face, apply mascara, and head for the door. It normally works for me, except for when I get stressed—I get monster Texas-size pimples on my chin. With me being a picker, it makes it worse.

I had a makeup trial this weekend. I wanted to make sure I did it in the heat so I could see if it would hold up all day being in Jamaica. Since it has been 95 degrees and up all week, I figured it would be the perfect time. Of course, my Texas-size pimple decided to join the party. Wanna see him?

Can you tell I am not a fan of early mornings on a weekend? Haha.

My friend Shannon with Mary Kay came over to my place and brought her magic bag. She went to high school with me, and she also remembers the tomboy years; we shared a few laughs about how makeup is still not my friend. While she got ready, a few friends came over and joined the party.

Want to see what Mr. Handy was doing to keep occupied?

Looks like he had some friends over too! :)

Momma Handy agreed to try some makeup, too. Maybe she is getting over her tomboy days. :)

Look how beautiful her eyes are…

Next up was my turn…first things first—had to cover up Texas.

I asked her to do a dramatic eye with everything else natural and maybe add some eyelashes…

What do you think? I love it, minus the lashes; they look a little clumpy.

I love my beautiful momma. She is such a trooper. :)

We are gonna do another trial and go darker…something like this…

You are beautiful! I would definitely try the darker eye look, and maybe play around with the foundation shades … this one doesn’t seem to match your skin, at least it looks that way in photos. If you’re going to be tan at the wedding, you might want to add some bronzer too. Let us see your follow-ups!

I agree..something about the foundation seems off and maybe too pinkish. I also think you should use a different liner…it looks like you gals went with a blueish-black liner and in my opinion a softer brown would look much better…for someone who doesn’t wear makeup I would highly recommend going for a more earthy natural look.

oh and despite my suggestions you still look super pretty, I just think that something about the look doesn’t seem like you :)

You look great! I would definitely try the darker eye look. I would also go maybe a shade darker on the foundation. In the pictures your face looks lighter then the rest of you.

Beautiful! As a fellow non-makeup wearer: when I had to grow up and felt I should wear it every day, I found Philosophy brand, and now I love makeup! Not sure about it for your wedding day, but for other events and everyday use, look at their powder foundations and skin care line at Sephora, it’s beautiful and clean and feels like nothing at all is on your face!

I love the smokey-eye look… I am lazy about makeup. However I do a quick smokey-eye every day for work just because I like how intense it looks :)
Good luck!!

hmmm. I agree with locket on the liner.. a gray or brown liner wont have that blueish hue..

I also think the foundation is off.. look at your chest/cleavage area compared to your face.. your face is wayyy lighter..

but you do look beautiful..

I agree with the others who say a little bronzer would really seal the deal on your look. You and your mom look great!!!!

Ooo I love the drama of a smokey eye. You’re already so pretty, but if you’re looking for a bit of drama, I’d say definitely try out the smokey eye.

You look radiant, my dear! I do have to say though, you need eyeshadow, stat! See how in your last 2 inspiration pics the eye shadow goes up higher than the lid crease? Do that. I go all the way up to my brow towards the inside corner then highlight with a lighter shade just below my brow. http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/02/12/smokey-eye-diy/ Other than that, you handled the makeup like a trooper and I have to say, you and your mom are so cute :)

Ooh I think you could def pull off the smoky eye look. How did you like the Mary Kay merchandise? I am a consultant so love it! I’m like you- like looking nice & girly etc but not wearing makeup however LOVE the MK skin care & even the makeup feels natural & light :-)

I like smokey eyes. Make sure there is no mascara on the false eye lashes…that will clump them up.

I think you look natural and pretty, just like you asked for! I agree with some of the other ladies on the foundation shade, though–I think a little experimentation with different shades might be a good thing.

I agree with the other ladies as well. The foundation, while making you glow is maybe not the right color. I have a very pink complexion and I have to use a foundation/powder that is heavy with beige and yellow tones. Anything with a ‘rosy’ hue to it and I end up looking like a tomato. I think we might have similar natural coloring!

Definitely do some more trials and please blog about them! I love the smoky eye but I definitely think you should try a natural look as well, sans blue tones for your island nuptials. Try a nice sable shadow with a chocolate colored liner. Oh, and play around with false lashes instead of mascara! Try the brown ones that aren’t very intense looking. I’ve used them and no one knew they were falsies (even my own mother) but my lashes were three times longer and super-thick and full. Best part? No worries about water proof for crying, sweating, what have you.

Okay, I’m done with tips but please do post more about this because it is awesome and you look gorgeous!

Nice! I did a Mary Kay trial, but unfortunately it wasn’t what I was looking for. I used that 2nd inspiration photo for my rehearsal dinner makeup, but let’s just say that didn’t go well, and even after my sister wiped 1/2 the goop off, I still looked like I had a ton of makeup on (when I normally wear none). This time a M.A.C. artist struck.

I think you look great, I would just add some blush/bronzer to bring out your cheeks more. Other than that, I love it!
