My parents walked me down the aisle, in what was certainly a blur for me. Our officiant, the Rev. Lynn James, started with a simple remembrance of those in our lives that have passed and then read our two readings: Song of Solomon 8:6-7 and an excerpt from Goodridge vs. Department of Public Health.
Our officiant was amazing. We met with her a few days before the wedding after having a several month correspondence. We talked a lot about our shared values and she used those answers to personalize the homily, speaking to our humanistic ideals. I had this immensely heartfelt reaction when she quoted me, quoting Shakespeare: “I cannot heave my heart into my mouth,” which was my summation of how I felt about Ribs.
Our vows were as traditional as they come:
“I, Ribbons, take you, Ribs, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part.”
We exchanged rings with the simple, “With this ring, I thee wed.”
And then we kissed.
As “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” played, we walked down the aisle, very much husband and wife.
