I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!

The Last of Our STDs

August 14th, 2010 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Glasses

Our save the dates were DIY. Our printer is not our friend. That’s why our STDs took 345985340 hours to finish.

First, we HAND CUT every single one. Homeboy at Kinko’s didn’t do a great job aligning things, so the lines on the back of the card didn’t match up with the picture on the front and there were two images on each A4 sheet that also didn’t align. Thanks, bro.

We tried two methods: Mr. G. used scissors, I used an X-Acto knife. Both produced crooked lines and uneven levels. Le sigh.

Then we used our tiny edge rounder to round off the corners of the postcard. Since our edges weren’t perfect, the corners weren’t quite right.

Last but not least, we hand wrote the addresses out on sticky labels and stuck ’em on to the postcard (that way we wouldn’t waste a postcard in case we made a mistake!). No fancy calligraphy here. We didn’t even address our friends as Mr. and Mrs.

In the end, we wound up making…15. Making a Facebook Event to collect friends’ addresses really is not the way to go. Our friends have been lagging, but we need to send these puppies out NOW, so we’ll keep addressing and sending them as we get them. We’re also sending blank ones to both our parents so they can address them to whomever they’d like.

In the end, our 50-person guest list means we won’t have to make many (four in a family? Yeah buddy, your family gets one!), so doing everything by hand isn’t such a P.I.T.A. They aren’t perfect—actually far from it—and we didn’t spend a fortune, but it gets our message across and sets the stage for our invitations, which we’ll be able to spend much more time on.

How much of a hassle were your save the dates?

Ours were a bit of a hassle for sure. In fact, it was our STD project that actually had my FI saying, “why do you have to make everything harder on yourself?” There were a lot of steps involved, and I had to utilize a bunch of my crafting supplies, but they turned out cute, and have been a hit with our guests, so it was all worth it.

They’re here if you’re curious:

We had issues with cutting our invites and save the dates too! It’s rough! Can’t wait to see your full reveal.

Ours were so easy! I did postcards on Zazzle and they were not expensive at all ($35 for 50 postcards). No cutting involved, and they look so great.

@JBelle7757: Good on you! We wanted to use an internet company but everything is in Japanese and we didn’t want to screw something up due to translation error. I wish we could’ve used Zazzle!

Ours were pretty easy- we wanted a photo magnet & my Mr.’s uncle runs a printing company (shout out to Reynold’s Business Forms, Inc. http://www.rbf-inc.com/ ) He helped us big the best one for our buck & then surprisingly gifted us with them :-P
