Dressing My Divas

August 16th, 2010 @ 4:56 pm by Miss Handbag

Since my bridesmaids are all so far away and spread out, I decided to let go and let them decide on whatever they wanted to wear for our wedding. The only “rules” that I have are that they are black and they feel sexy in them. Every girl has a LBD in their closet, and if they don’t, now is the time to go get one. I dont care if they spend $30 or $150—it’s all up to them and what they can afford. I know times are tough, so I didn’t want to put them in a financial burden. I already feel slightly bad that they have to pay for airfare and hotel to Jamaica, so I figured I would spare them this. :)

I trust all my girls to find something cute. If they feel good in whatever they chose, I am certain, they will look fantastic. When a girl looks good, it makes them feel good and it shows. :)

In a perfect world… this is what I WOULD dress them in. These dresses are so adorable:

Anyone else out there letting their girls pick whatever they want to wear? How is it going so far?

I did this *exact* same thing and all of my girls looked freaking fabulous. Tip: give them a deadline for when they should have their outfits. I asked my girls to have everything purchased by the beginning of May (my wedding was May 22) just so they weren’t scrambling last minute for anything. Some of my girls put it off til the last possible second (so around May 8 they had everything) so I’m glad I gave them a timeline.

I’m having my girls go with LBDs as well. Alas it’s not going as well as I hoped (and I’m sure it’s just me, and your story will be different). I actually got one of them a dress and wanted them to match that one - my requirements were - knee or a little over the knee length, spaghetti straps or strapless and fancy fabric (like silk). One out of the other 3 girls already had one that fit criteria and the other one just went ahead and got a LONG dress (and mermaid too, no less) with wide straps. Now I’m at a loss about what to do. The current thinking is to get the 4th girl buy a long dress, but it certainly won’t be a mermaid…. This is all too much drama for me that I can’t handle 6 weeks before the wedding… The moral of the story here - if you care about the length of the dress, let them know. Otherwise I think LBDs are a great idea. I’m getting them red scarfs to match my color (which is red). Good luck!

My girls are picking blue dresses. I thought it would be easier than it has been. I told them a shade of blue that coordinates with our palatte, and kneeish length. One has her dress, one has an if all else fails dress, and one emailed me freaking out that she needed more direction.

I told my girls to pick any dress from Bill Levkoff that came in Eggplant. I think everyone is happy with their choice.

I’m doing the same thing, only with long dresses. I told them any long black dress that doesn’t have any beading/sparkles. It has to be floor length and they will wear red shoes. My girls love to shop, so they’ve been having a good time! And the best part of it is they can spend whatever money they want- one bridesmaid got her dress for $40!!

What I did is I picked out a color in the Lula Kate line and then the girls were allowed to pick out their styles that they preferred. I’m also open for the shoes…letting them wear what they please as long as its in the color scheme:)

I’m not quite so easy going about letting go about this but in your situation that is very nice of you! I think you’re right too- if a girl feels great, they will look great & it will all be perfect!

Cute dresses and shoes. I have just two bridesmaids and I wanted them to just pick something but they wouldn’t have it. Flat out said no. So I picked what I really wanted and that was that. You think they know how much of a control freak I am at heart? I bet they do…

All of your picks are so cute! If I were having bridesmaids I would have them wear LBDs too, a la the inspiration picture in my post about not having bridesmaids :)

You’re obviously a very good friend to go out of your way to do this, especially when travel is involved. I’m sure your girls wouldn’t mind matching dresses, but this ensures they can truly find something they will want to wear again. I love that it’s popular now to have bridesmaid’s coordinated versus completely matching. We only included family in our party, so I only had my sister and SIL on my side, and they wanted to wear the same dress. They picked out the style and color (I originally had a different color in mind, but fell in love with what they picked out), and we went from there.

Yes! I’m letting my girls pick their dresses! First of all they are all spread out across the tri-state area. Second of all they all have different income levels. So we’re going to pick three different dresses from the same store, in the same color, and then the girls will be able to pick from one of the three.
