Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Biting off More Than I Can Chew…

Biting off More Than I Can Chew… : wedding diy ithaca Locket1 locket1

Sorry, couldn’t resist a cuteness pic with wittle Maple

With dwindling time before the wedding, I am beginning to think that maybe I have taken on too many DIY tasks (excluding the many I want to add), and it has me worried. Will I have enough time to get everything finished without going insane and becoming a frazzled bridezilla mess?

I mean, do I really want to look like this the days before my wedding?

Biting off More Than I Can Chew… : wedding diy ithaca Locket2 locket2

Furbaby Molly in frazzled/cuteness overload

The answer is “NO,” but I don’t want to call it quits and give up on my DIY dreams. Thus far, I’ve gotten through a lot of the big tasks and have started some of the others with many ideas still floating in my DIY brain. I blame the blogosphere and fellow Bees with such cute wedding projects that make me want to shout, “Yes! That rocks! I am so adding that to my list!”

So here I am nearing the one-month-to-go mark and thinking of things that I must let go. :(

So far on the DIY front (projects started/finished):

DIY To Do:

  • Escort Cards
  • Card Box
  • Boutonnieres
  • Garter
  • Yudu’d Bride and Bridesmaids Shirts
  • Flower/Paper Garland
  • Fabric Letter Banner
  • Signs for Tables
  • Programs
  • Bags for Dessert/Candy Buffet
  • Baked Goods for Dessert/Candy Buffet
  • Menu for Dinner Buffet
  • Jewelry/Gifts for Bridal Party
  • Cake Topper
  • And so many more things I am sure I am not thinking of!

So here’s the tough part…I don’t want to get rid of any of these things. So my game plan is to work my bridal booty off and prioritize these projects. What can I do without? What do I really want? What will drive me crazy if I attempt it?

Have you found yourself to have DIY brain overload with dwindling time?

I’m in the same boat, our house looks like a craft tornado came through it! There is stuff everywhere and I’m wondering when I’ll find tiem to get it all done!

Oh, I know the feeling of possibly taking on too much! My DIY list is so long it’s kind of embarrassing! Hopefully you will find a good way to prioritize. Good luck getting it all done!!

I’m very concerned about this happening. My FI laughs because I’m putting things together now, when we’re still 4 months out. But, like you, I have so many things to do, that I can’t afford to wait.

People keep asking me how I know how many (OOT bags, escort cards, whatever) to make when I don’t have RSVPs back (Heck, I haven’t even SENT invitations yet)? The advantage of a small wedding is that we’re pretty sure we know who’s coming. Yes, there is the possibility that some folks won’t come, but I’d rather have extras than have to ditch the project all together.

I’m just doing everything like everyone’s coming, and if I have 10 extra programs at the end of the day… fine. If I have 6 extra OOT bags… great, I’ll give them to vendors to snack on!

In your situation now, do you have crafty friends or bridesmaids. I don’t have particularly crafty BMs, which is why I’m starting now ;)

Cake toppers, boutonniers, and a garter can easily be purchased if you get overwhelmed and don’t have time to DIY. I say you tackle your projects like an assembly line - delegate tasks to BMs, GM, FH, whoever and target their specific skills. If you’ve got a graphic designer in the house have them design paper products, then get a person good with words to lay out what you need and proofread, then print it out yourself, etc. Right now Mr. G and I are the only ones able to work on projects but we definitely get by by delegating to our strong points. Good luck!

I’m with Teresa - what about enlisting some help? It makes it more fun and a bit more feasible!

After prioitizing I vote for enlisting help if you can.

If it makes you feel better I’m 9 months out and just now realizing how much I’ve agreed to take on myself. I’m sure in 7 or 8 more months I will have some crazy eyes and be pleading for help from above.

I have yet to actually make the DIY list but I am definitely worried about this happening to me next spring!

OMG, I know exactly what you mean! We have 2 months left to go, and the big stuff like the centerpieces and the programs really has me feeling overwhelmed. I’m hoping to be able to rely on my bridesmaids to come over and help in exchange for burgers on the grill and fruity drinks.

The people suggesting you prioritize the list aren’t wrong, but you can even back it up a step and break the list into Needs and Wants.

I mean, okay, I can be totally harsh and say you don’t need anything that’s left on the list in order to get married, but that’s not very fun, is it? Still, it’s possible to divvy it up. And then prioritize. And then delegate. :)

I think what leapt out at me as a not-a-need is menus for the buffet. It’s a buffet. If they want to know what’s on it, they can look. IF you get the bigger stuff done, AND you still feel like you need buffet menus, AND you have time, then hey, go nuts! But having it staring you in the face on your to-do list every day is just going to make the list longer without making the wedding any better.

It’s like GTDers’ “Someday” file. Someday, when I have time, I will do this. But until then, I’m just not going to worry about it.

Get some friends together and have a craft night. You can get these things accomplished before September, but you are definitely going to have to work. I feel this way about my DIY projects a lot of the time. Many of them have to wait until I can travel home and have the proper supplies. It is making me nervous!
