The Great Bra Search

August 16th, 2010 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Earrings

*WARNING to Mr E and all sensitive relatives of mine (or his): Please refrain from reading the following post. You know you will regret it if you do. :)

So… I bought this pretty strapless ivory torsolette to wear under my dress a few months ago. I just figured because the dress is strapless and the torsolette is strapless that they would work together. Wrong. When I finally got to try them both on at the same time (the hazard of living all over is that things aren’t always in the same place when you want them to be), I discovered that my dress is a bit lower in the back than I expected, allowing the not-so-attractive strap (is that what you call it when it is on a torsolette?) to show. It was not exactly what I was going for. Newbie mistake.

I went back to the drawing board to find a strapless bra to go under my dress. The requirements:

  1. Comfortable and doesn’t constantly slip down (for obvious reasons)
  2. Low enough in the back so I don’t scandalise all of our guests by flashing the strap
  3. Kind enough to give a bit of a boost to these A/B cups of mine (I say I’m a size B but that is on a good day)
  4. If it is pretty too, then that would be nice

Who would have thought something meeting the above criteria would be so hard to find? Oh, and did I also mention that at this point our budget is steadily dwindling? So a bra under the $100 NZD mark would be very, very nice. Also, before you ask, no, going braless isn’t an option for me. Unfortunately.

First, I tried the Nu bra.

Meh. Not for me I think. It was nice, and definitely solved the low back problem. BUT I need a little more… security. Plus I would need to wear it for 9 hours or more, and I don’t trust the adhesive that much.

I went to a couple lingerie shops in my town, but was having no luck. I did buy a thing called a “low bra extender” at one to try with a strapless bra I already own.

Once I finally figured out how it worked, it proved to be a fail as well. It was much to big for me and resulted in the cups of my bra constantly falling down.

Moving on.

I decided to browse the internets. Following some suggestions by other brides I looked at:

The Carnival Bridal Splendor Low Plunge Longline Bra

Low U Back Torsolette from an NZ Bridal Salon

The latter two turned out to be too expensive, and while the first one was affordable, the reason I didn’t end up going for any of these babies is because I’m chicken about buying bras or bra-like items over the internet. Yes, I know I can return it if it doesn’t fit. But I don’t care. I just won’t do it.

I was about to resign myself to the scary Nu bra (or ask a dressmaker to sew something into the dress… oh look, more dollars), when I decided to try the Bendon Lingerie store in my town one last time. Eureka! There I found (hidden in the back) a pretty lacy strapless bra that comes with a strap (similar to the low back extender pictured above but better) to go across my tummy and hook to the back of the bra to pull it down. It’s comfy, it’s pretty, and I paid $59.99 NZD.

Phew. Now fingers crossed that this one works perfect. Otherwise I’m just going to go find a dressmaker and tell her my tale of woe until she fixes everything. Or maybe just use miles and miles of flashtape to hold the dress up. Ha.

Did anyone else have trouble finding the right lingerie to go under your wedding dress?

Since I haven’t found the dress yet it hasn’t come to this but I have a feeling I will have just as much trouble! Hope your latest purchase works out & bonus: it is pretty! :-)

I haven’t started yet, but since I am 34DD, I am thinking this will be a serious pain in the butt. May have no choice but to pay the money to have a bra built AND wear one haha. Gotta keep the ladies up and secure!

I hope the elle macpherson works for you!! If you do have to go the nu bra route in the end, don’t be too scared. I’m an A cup and wear the nu bra for A LOT of occasions. It’s not that uncomfortable and the adhesive is really good, I re-wear mine at least 50 times (and admittedly don’t take the best care of it!) It also makes the ladies look bigger and gives cleavage. I bought new “cutlets,” as we like to call them, for my wedding!

I’m also an a/b cup size, and I had my seamstress put cups in my strapless dress so I dont’ have to wear a bra that day. It’s just enough to give a little shape, they’re small enough that I don’t need much in the way of lift or support.

I find that when I wear strapless tops, I’m usually hiking the bra up but the shirt/dress stays in place. Is it an option for you to put cups directly in the dress?

Yes! I have the added burden of needing to find a nude color longline bra/corset/torsolette — but LIGHT nude because I’m Paley McNoColor and if it’s too dark you can actually see it through my (non-strapless) dress (same with white). It’s IMPOSSIBLE. Apparently, this is an item that’s just not sold anymore. Or, if it is sold, it’s got uncomfortable boning, or the fabric is impossibly thick/heavy or it’s $500. I have something I bought at Victoria’s Secret about 10 years ago that’s basically just a strapless bra with a tube of polyester attached to it that goes all the way down over my butt and I might just suck it up and wear that. Originally I had wanted to find something else because I don’t need THAT much coverage, but there’s nothing comparable (sans butt fabric) on the market today.

Mine has a structured top so no bra for me. I had a TERRIBLE experience with a strapless bra at grad. It would slip down and smoosh my boob in half.

@Adrienne: It could be an option, if I can find a good dressmaker :)

Thanks guys for the comments on the Nu Bra too- it seems less scary now! So if the elle macpherson is another fail, then at least I has some backup!

the Nu Bra is awesome, and the victoria’s secret adhesive bras are even better (and cheaper too, I think). Since I have small and perky boobs, I’m just wearing the VS adhesive “petals” - I wear them all the time when I’m not at work, highly recommended. GL

Miss Earrings, that is such a pretty bra!

For those of you who are a little more top-heavy- I went to my local fancy bra store and bought this french-made seamless, corset, strapless bra and had it stiched into the dress (since I did lose a little weight before the wedding it kept my dress up!)

I was incredibly secure all night. I highly recommend that route. After the wedding you can slice the stiches and wear the bra with other tops and dresses.

By the time I found a longline bra that fit AND was comfortable AND didn’t cost an arm and a leg, I had given up on caring that it peeked up above the dress about a quarter of an inch in back. We hiked up the dress and pinned them together for the day.

Yes, I’m that lazy. But really, they were both white, and it was such a tiny bit showing…I would hope a wedding would be interesting enough to distract people from it!

My dress had a corset back, and was fitted enough that I didn’t need to wear a bra. And I’m a 36G!! I was stunned that I didn’t need to wear one. Stunned. But it turned out perfectly!

I still swear by having cups put in the dress. Can give you a boost, some structure, no bra lines ,and super cheap.
