Mrs. Barrettes's Picture
Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
About Mrs. Barrettes

Mr. Barrettes spoke with our potential catering company yesterday, and we’re up to our eyeballs in heavy hors d’oeuvres. My mouth waters just reading the list of potential players:

If You'd Like Chicken, Please Have It for Lunch : wedding food guam Main Me main_me

  • French crepes with Boursin cheese, asparagus, and fire-roasted peppers
  • Grilled fig and goat cheese crostini
  • Salmon tartare on potato gaufrette with creme fraiche and caviar
  • Tandoori grilled prawn with mint and cilantro aioli
  • Lobster spring roll with avocado and spicy red grapefruit aioli
  • Wild mushroom crostini with pancetta and triple-cream brie
  • Black pepper herb-crusted beef tenderloin with sun-dried tomato chutney and horseradish cream
  • Petite croque-monsieur with black-forest ham, havarti, swiss, and cranberry mustard

And the list goes on and on… how are we ever going to decide when there are something like 45 options to choose from? There is a veggie list, a shellfish list, a coastal fish list, a poultry list, a meat list, a hot list, a cold list, a stationary list, etc., etc., etc.

At the very least, we have decided against chicken. Sorry, chicken. It’s not that I don’t love you. I eat you often, and I assume most of my guests do as well. But you’re just not special enough to make the list for the big day. You taste the same all the time. Even if you’re marinated, fried, skewered, glazed, or roasted, you still taste like chicken. We’re not flying to Napa Valley to eat chicken.

How did you decide what to keep and what to cut?

We chose chicken! :) Our criteria was nothing our guests would make themselves — chicken stuffed with boursin cheese seemed pretty out of the ordinary. We didn’t serve a beef dish, however.

Due to my preferences and a good amt of veggie guests, we had predominantly veg (and egg-free) apps. If you are only serving apps, I would be sensitive to the fact that some guests don’t eat any type of animal (fish or otherwise). Those crepes sound divine! I always hate it when I go to a function, and I can’t eat a single hors d’oeuvre even when there is a meal being served. I couldn’t imagine going to a function and only being able to eat one app when that’s all that is being served. That being said, you should do what you want b/c it’s your wedding. I kinda like the idea of just apps b/c it gives so much more time to mingle about, and the variety of food is great. Be careful -it could end up being more $ than a sit-down dinner though! It is just as easy though to fill up on hors d’oeuvres as a meal. Just be sure that it is clear that there isn’t a sit down meal, so people eat a fair amt of the apps and are satisfied.

We’re probably skipping the chicken, too. I get that it’s probably the most universal of meats, but I happen to be marrying the one (non-vegetarian) person I know who actively dislikes chicken.

Ha, my personal pet peeve is an overabundance of chicken at events. I think you’ll be fine with finding lots of other unusual options. I’d echo a sentiment above though and try to have a decent amount of veggie options - as much for vegetarians as for those trying to eat more healthfully.

mmmfig and goat cheese crostini…. oooh what a wine-pairing heaven you’ll have at your wedding!! I made my choices based on what I really wanted to eat. Some comfort food, some more exotic, all my faves. And I skipped shellfish and bacon (tear) so as not to discriminate and make the Jewish side sad they couldn’t have it.

Our fun was Whose Food Allergies Will We Work Around? One of my two (by my count) bridezilla moments was saying “I’m the bride, and I like Caesar salad, so the ONE person with egg allergies is just going to have to DEAL.”

We did have chicken ;) but it was awesome—stuffed with sage, apples, and cranberries.

Yum! Everything sounds delish. I think your recaps will need to include lots of pics of all this food.

Your hors d’oeuvres sound delicious! Especially the grilled fig and goat cheese crostini…yum! We too are having a chicken free wedding, because who really likes chicken all that much?

I’m a picky eater- mostly no meat so I am letting my Mr. have A LOT of control over food! He’ll make the smart decisions I can’t since I just don’t care about a lot of it.. but the foods I do like I REALLY care about!

HAHAHA your title cracked me up. I’m also against wedding chicken. But we’re having a fully pescatarian wedding and now I’m really tempted to put “If you’d like chicken, have it for lunch” on our RSVP website rather than a section for meal choice.

Yum! All those sound fantastic. I would split the list in half, half of what you want and what Mr. B wants and if things land on the same list, ask a parent to make the last few selections. For us, our food was easy: an English roast and vegetarian curry- its all about Mr. G!

@cabanagrl9: We sooooo wanted to, but I didn’t know that having hors d’oeuvres passed around for 4 hours would be more expensive than actual plated food. In my mind it would have been a glorified wine and cheese party, but that’s just not the way the cookie crumbled….
