Mrs. Barrettes's Picture
Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
About Mrs. Barrettes

Oh, Guam!

Since I’m writing to you all the way from Guam, I thought I’d take a minute to share some photos of our little island paradise! It’s a great spot to honeymoon for those of you willing to part with $1400 (from USA) for airfare. Most of Guam’s visitors are Japanese and Chinese families looking for a quick island getaway.

What I love most about living on Guam are the sunsets. Almost every evening from 67pm, the sky puts on a show. Never have I seen sunsets anywhere that come as close to the ones on Guam.

We also have some beautiful beaches, which look just as pretty in the daytime.

Not much here as far as cities are concerned, but we have our fair share of nightlife and shopping. Super high-end fashion stores like Gucci and Chanel are popular with the Japanese, greatly contrasting the rest of the retail on island. We don’t have Starbucks or Gap, but we have a massive Kmart.

Its easy to see why Mr. Barrettes and I have been able to live far away from home for so long. But now that we are tying the knot and thinking about family, our days living on Guam are numbered.

Have you ever lived far away from your family? What brought you back home?

Thank you for posting this! My family is from Guam so I travel there often … but a lot of people know very little about it! My friends used to try to figure out what they should call me … most often they guess Guamish … but I’ve also gotten Gutch [like dutch?] and one silly drunk boy said “guamdidliumsious” … yeah ……..

anyway, it’s a gorgeous place and i love it!! :)

Those pictures are gorgeous - I’m also curious as to what brought you there. Can’t remember if you mentioned it earlier…

My fiance and I are currently across the US from both our families. It’s my second stint on the west coast, so I’m pretty used to it and it only sometimes feels far, but he’s having trouble. He is near set at making this temporary once he graduates, but I’m less sure (and he’s slowly getting more into California).

these pictures made me cry a bit inside! SO beautiful! You are a lucky girl to live somewhere so beautiful & warm! I live in the big apple in a glass-walled condo..beautiful yes, but with all the hustle & bustle, living in a place like Guam seems like HEAVEN on earth!

First of all- WOW, AMAZING pictures!! Everything looks so beautiful & I especially like baby Barettes in the water :-) Right now we only live a few hours from each of our hometowns (1.5 from my Mr.’s & abour 4.5 from mine) but neither of us want to go home & in fact we want to move further away! I do think about how it’s too bad our kids won’t have their grandparents close by but that’s just how we need it to be. Both sets of our parents are just too demanding :-P

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures. I’ve only ever known Guam as the site of a refugee camp where my family stopped after fleeing Vietnam (before I was born), so it’s great to put pictures to the name and learn more about it!

@Mrs. Trail Mix: There is a great theatre here and I signed a 2-yr contract to be in a Cirque-directed show!
@Andrea: The term the locals use here is “Guamanian”. Never heard of “Gutch”, but thats awesome!
@hsearle: mmmm…I haven’t been to that one, but I love the Meskla restaurant in Hagatna :)

I would have loved to visit Guam. Unfortunately my holidays are the same as the rest of Japan and everytime I try to go the price gets jacked up. I am way envious of your beaches and K-Mart. I have always been a So. Cal. girl and the fact that Tokyo has the ugliest beaches around makes me totally homesick! Beautiful pictures, I am way jealous!

I love the last photo with your pup! I have a similar one of my dog lying down in a mountain stream to cool off. So cute!
