Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

U-S-A! U-S-A!

August 17th, 2010 @ 8:39 am by Mrs. Glasses

Let’s set the way-back machine for June: we were knee-deep in wedding planning but still had to tackle Mr. G.’s green card. Finally, the day had come for our interview at the U.S. Embassy…

It is fist pumps all around here today! Fist pumps, slammin’ a Bud, and blasting Party in the USA! Only me, of course. Mr. Glasses is still English, despite being the proud owner of a new green card.

We were approved today after four months of frustration, mountains of paperwork, quite a lot of money, and two interviews. It feels so good. Like a huge weight off my chest. Honestly, wedding planning is stressful enough, but at least we have control over those plans. It was so surreal to sit in that crowded lobby, waiting to hear if we would be approved to enter America—my own home country. Everyone was really nice, though, and it all went smoothly this time around.

The stress if far from over now. We still need to pack up our things to be shipped to my parents’ house in L.A. We need to book a flight home. We need to sell off the furniture and big things we’ve acquired while living here (a futon/sofa, the Wii, rice cooker, etc.). And then, when we get to America, we need to register Mr. G. for the Selective Services (wtf!), change my name, find an apartment, find jobs…

Oh yeah, and have a wedding.

But seriously! Getting a green card had to be one of the hardest of all the things we have to do this year. I feel like Superwoman now! All of our upcoming wedding projects will be done at the snap of a finger! Our e-mails to prospective vendors will be done with the wave of a wand! We’ll come in well under budget with effortless ease!

…OK, now I’m daydreaming. We really do feel on top of the world and feel like we can tackle anything else that comes our way now.

Have you had any recent victories?

Recent victory= FINALLY getting the venue coordinator/ hotel manager (same person) to send us the updated wedding pricing for the hotel rooms because we wanted to include those on an info paper with our save the dates. After that, at about midnight while my Mr. is trying to fall asleep I figured out how to print envelopes to send the STD’s in! (Because let’s face I am NOT addressing almost 100 of those things!) I went with the font Lucida Handwriting & I have to say it looks great! I can’t wait to start running those things through & sending my STD’s to their new happy homes :-)

Wooohoo! We’re still waiting on our AOS/EAD/AP packet and I’m with you - this is way more stressful than the wedding planning portion!

Thank you everyone for the kind words!

@jlp2w71611: Hooray for both those things, especially the printer! Printers are a totally pain in the ass!

@aruka11: Good luck! Breath!
