About Mrs. Seashell

Waaaaaay back when, I mentioned that I got a preview of our wedding invitations when I was home for my Providence bridal shower. I also mentioned that they scared me a bit. I guess that’s the thing about ordering invitations from a tiny sample color swatch: it’s just a tiny sample.

Don’t they look lovely all together?

Well, below is the actual “majestic” purple in the mock-up I received. Compare it to the samples above. Ugh.

When I saw it my reaction was lukewarm at best. I tried to smile. Mama Seashell said she had the same reaction when the invitation designer handed them to her. I’ve shared this with you before - the best I could muster up at first glance was, “I’m thinking they’re a little LOUD, and kind of ’Barney the Dinosaur’ 4 year old’s birthday party invitation colored, you know?” And they were. Even now, looking back at the sample, they are a far cry from the deep, rich, “majestic” purple I originally envisioned and selected. And then I said, “oh well, I guess that’s that.” Mama Seashell knew my disappointment and called the invitation designer the next day regardless of my resignation with the process.

I got a call from our designer the next day, and she shared that she was disappointed in the color too. (Communication people!) She offered that the best alternative we had was to ship the pocketfolds back and switch to “ruby”. I was hesitant because the undertone of the original “majestic” paper was gold (like our accents) and the “ruby” had a silver shimmer. She advised that the metallic undertone wouldn’t be an issue, especially if my main concern was getting the overall look of the invitations to be darker and richer.

One rush order later, here is our invitation (left) with the original mock up (right):

Definitely richer, definitely darker, definitely looks less like construction paper.

Moral of the story - the wee little cute square sample thingies don’t always look the same in reality. Now, granted, my photographs aren’t perfect either. Our final product invites (the ones of the left) really aren’t as cranberry as they appear. But what I’m ultimately trying to communicate is that you don’t always know what you’re getting in the world of samples, email proofs, and itty bitty square paper swatches.

So here’s the thing about our invitations. Do I love them? In the end, yes. They’re really beautiful. They are actually SO MUCH better looking in person. In fact, I’m kind of frustrated sharing the photos that I have because they really don’t do them justice. At all. The thermography is totally lost and they look dull, flat, and the final invites appear cranberry. Which they aren’t. But as many times over as I try to photograph them, it just isn’t happening.

Maybe just one more for the road…

Did you have any invitation-induced headaches? Was it worth it in the end?

I know what you mean about the paper not photographing well! My paper doesn’t either, and it’s so awesome!!

I think in the end, you made the right choice…I love your invites! Did the designer charge you anything extra to switch it up?

@bridesmomma: I was glad Mama Seashell had my back! :)
@Miss Socks: I think shipping + restocking was about $30. Totally worth it!

We used Ruby Stardream paper as well and I also felt like it didn’t photograph well. But it is gorgeous in person and I guess that is all that really matters.

Sounds awful but in the end they do look beautiful! We’re working with a graphic design art student so *hopefully* we don’t have TOO many issues!

Those look fantastic and basically exactly what I want for my invites! Except that I would probably go with the silver accent over the gold. But that “ruby” that you switched to is beautiful!

I actually like the first color, but I see where you’re coming from. It is a bit simplistic. I love the finish on the paper you ended up choosing, it’s so lustrous!

Ruby was a much better choice. Our invites were printed on the wrong paper (i.e. just plain old cardstock) to begin with. It kinda made me feel sick when I first opened them up. Luckily, the printer realized the mistake and re-did them.

I’m glad it all worked out in the end!

I too had headaches. I met with a stationer 6 months before the wedding date. I checked back with them 5 months until wedding….then 4….then 3 months. By then, I’m like “Wow…they must really be coming up with something good!”

Then when I pushed for a date I could have them in hand, they finally told me the graphic designer (who they consult with) did not have anything for me yet and I would have to choose something that could be printed in house due to time constraints.

I chose something half-heartedly and they were to send me a proof in the next few days. In the meantime, I went to Scriptura just to look. They sat with me and listened to me and customized something I think is just beutiful.

They rushed the order and I peaked in the box as soon as she handed them to me….simple and elegant just as I pictured.

I took them all home and pulled them out to show my fiance. I kept asking him “How gorgeous are these?” and when he picked one up to admire it….I noticed they had the wrong address for the venue (I had emailed them the wrong date)!

I laughed, I cried (well I cried first)….then I called them back and they were kind enough to replace them with a correction for a minimal cost.

I didnt think I would worry so much about invitations….but I feel like they are a glimpse of our personalities and set the tone for the wedding.

Hey Ms. Seashell! Forgive my ignorance, but where are your invites from? I’m pretty much head over heels in love with the pocketfold layout and would love to do something like that myself. You’re a doll! (Oh, and I freakin’ love the ruby, I can just imagine the color it actually is, and I’m so happy you received what you wanted! Hooray!)

Duh, nevermind… I’m guessing Envelopments, I guess I could have looked at the name in the first picture. Haha, but if you could still let me (us) know the process of everything that would be great!

I think both sets of the invitations are pretty. I too work with the Envelopments line. When I saw the first batch I wondered if there was a mix up and the color “Jester” was used. The Majestic and Ruby are beautiful. Small swatches do make it hard. As an invitationer I know it is hard to send everything to an expectant bride. A helpful suggestion once you select the color, ask for a large swatch or card to get a good look at the color or pattern. We try to send “perfect” samples when we can, but will do everything we can to make sure the expectation and result match.

Our biggest invitation problem - couples that do not proof well - PLEASE really proof the invitation, cards and envelopes and make sure things are perfect.

My personal biggest wedding invitation headache… my mother kept adding people after I finalized the invitations. I still love her.
