About Mrs. Plaid

I’m not actually referring to beauty and people, but it’s true of those things, too. I’m talking about what to wear under your wedding dress.

Girls, when you purchased your dress, did you think about undergarments first? I sure as heck didn’t. And let me tell you, it has been a difficult search. Here are some pictures of my dress so that you will understand my difficulty.

Hello, exposed back. So basically I needed something strapless and backless. Backless? I know, right. Well I didn’t have any luck when searching, so I turned to the ladies of Weddingbee, and one lady pointed me in the direction of Her Room and this particular undergarment:

With a couple clicks, this slip was mine in a few days time. Of course, as soon as it came in the mail I took the opportunity to try on my dress one more time, but with this slip underneath.

Hmmm, I don’t like it. It’s got this sticky stuff on the cups that’s supposed to hold it up. It wasn’t really working. It seems like it sags a bit. So I decided to see if I could find other options.

I recently decided to pop into JC Penney (I was actually on the hunt for something sexy for my upcoming boudoir shoot) and found this:

It's What's Underneath That Counts : wedding austin undergarments Spanx Source

And I had recently seen this post written by Miss Seahorse that included a little information about this bra:

It's What's Underneath That Counts : wedding austin undergarments Nubra Source

I thought, yeah, this looks like a better option. So I bought the shorts thing at only $25. Score! I haven’t purchased the bra part yet but plan to in the next couple days. I think this is a much better option for me and will be much more comfortable under my dress on the big day!

Here’s my other issue. (If any of you have worn a backless dress or just have some kind of creative, genius ideas, please share.) A lot of times my bras make lines or indentations in my back. What do I wear the day of the wedding before I get into my dress so that I can avoid lines? Do I just wear that NuBra the whole day?

Next up: What’s underneath is not to be seen by the groom…a change of wardrobe!

Did you have a difficult time shopping for your undergarment? Or are you able to wear your “something special” for your groom under your dress the whole day?

If you want to avoid bra lines, can you wear a tank top with a built in bra while getting ready or even a bikini top?

My friend wore the same dress. She had bra cups sewn in and the day of getting ready she just didn’t wear a bra at all about 3 hours before the ceremony (just in case).

I’ve used the Nu Bra before and had great luck with it. I’m rather busty (think bigger than DD), so finding bras to go under some gowns can be difficult, but I was comfortable all night in the NuBra and probably could have trusted it more than I did.

Do you get the lines in your back if you wear a sports bra? Or how about a tank with a shelf bra? I wouldn’t want to wear the NuBra the entire day, simply because it will warm up and not last through the night.

I actually bought the backless and strapless NuBra that you posted to wear under a bridesmaids dress, and it did NOT work for me. It has the sticky stuff on the inside of the cups that I found difficult to work with and personally think it all depends on your cup size/bust/etc. I’m not the biggest but not the smallest and it just gave me no support :( From what I remember it is not too pricey, so you may want to still try it out!

I haev the Nu Bra and have used it about 20 times and it still works great! Im a 34B. I find that the more tension there is the easier it stays up. I think it was $30 bucks? I agree with PP, either wear a sports bra or a tank top with build in bra. Good luck!

You might consider adding dress tape to the first bra that didn’t work - you might find that using the dress panels on the side, for example, might give you more “oomph” if you try the nubra and it doesn’t do enough :-). I once had to wear an awful bridesmaid dress that was too big on top and the whole thing was held up with dress tape (better than paying $200 for alterations!)

I am totally worried about undergarment shopping. I haven’t gone yet so I have no advice but I’m sure the hive will help you out! I can understand how difficult it might be to have something proper with a back like that, as beautiful as your dress is!

Would sewn-in cups in the actual dress help you out? They can add them during alterations ad then you’d have support from the dress itself.

Love love love your dress, I would totally do this too. I think I have a nice back because I rock climb so this looks uber fun

My dress is that low in the back. I bought a low cut long line bra. I am not sure about the brand because my bridal salon sold it to me. PM if you want more information and will take a look at the brand!

I haven’t even thought about under things yet! For an ex VS employee it may seem shocking..I am going to try my pretty on again this weekend and will prob determine from there if I will need anything fancy.

Miss Plaid, I wore that dress for my wedding in May!! I had my seamstress sew in cups as well, and I didn’t need to wear anything else underneath. Also, I wore a bra that day while I was getting ready, and by the time we had our first look the marks on my back were gone.

as a big busted woman who was put into one too many low cut front back and strapless creations for bridal parties etc. I highly recomend having your seamstress put cups into your dress and do a tight fitting — that has been my salvation

Thanks for the reminder about the bra indentions. The back of my dress looks just like this!

The price of beauty! Good luck on trying the Nu bra or whatever you choose & that it works perfectly with your dress AND is comfortable :-) And I would suggest either going braless, wearing a sports bra, or just wearing the Nu bra all day!

I had thought I could wear a strapless bra and spanx under my dress but was told at my last dress fitting that it wasn’t working (the girls were not getting enough lift). I went right out to a specialty store and bought a bustier that is plenty lifty, we’ll see what the verdict is on Thursday for my next dress fitting.

Agree with some of the other posters that you could look at getting cups sewn in - often dresses will actually provide enough support on their own without needing an undergarment. Other brides I know have just gone braless the morning of to avoid lines - just tell your photographer to shoot close-ups when doing hair and makeup.

Thanks for all the tips. I’m definitely going to have to look into getting cups sewn in for sure. I didn’t know how easy that would be. Thanks!

Your dress is so pretty, but I can see how the lack of a back would make it difficult to support “the girls.” I agree with everyone else, look at having cups sewn in. My dress basically had cups already there, so I didn’t have to wear anything under, and it was much more comfy in the heat.

I think I’m just going to avoid this whole decision and go bra-less! So much easier. :)
