Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Choosing Hues—Navy Blue and…?

August 18th, 2010 @ 4:20 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I love navy blue. I love that it’s dark and crisp and has more personality than just plain black. I was pretty certain that I wanted navy to be one my wedding colors right away, but I wasn’t set on the secondary color.

Photos like these made me heart navy and pink:

The pink was a little too girlie for Mr. Hippo (er…King Hippo) to get on board with, which I can understand, but it is pink, no? Then I considered navy blue and light blue, but with limited options for blue flowers and blue hydrangeas (which I love!) not being in season in March, I thought having double blues would limit our decorating options.

Then I found these lovely photos and completely knew what my colors would have to be. Navy and yellow.

Don’t you just love the yellow flowers with the navy bridesmaids dresses? I will definitely be stealing that idea. Navy is such a flattering color and great with any skin tone; I think my bridesmaids will look great in it. I’m completely sold!

How many color combinations did you consider before finally nailing it down?

This is where I started too! (My first posts were about selecting colors). I initially wanted a black and white wedding. Then I added touches of gold for some warmth. But then I couldn’t find bridesmaid dresses that worked so I added hints of deep purple here and there (which I’m now loving), and then the original black and white got scrapped all together. Now we’re ivory and gold with touches of purple. It’s a process for sure!
I adore the navy and yellow!

This was the first thing we had set (besides that we were getting married)- silver & lavender, done!

I love both of those color combos though :-)

We were debating between these two options too! Like Mr. Hippo, Mr. Pudding thought that the pink was too girly, so we nixed it. I did end up throwing just a touch of pink into the flower arrangements though, so our wedding was mostly navy and white with bright splashes of yellow and tiny accents of fuchsia here and there :) Why not have both?

Navy is my absolute favorite..and pink was our accent color! Luckily, Mr. Q was right on board with it and embraced the pink. Yellow is my other favorite navy coordinate, so you chose great colors in my opinion!

I LOVE navy - I had the same hard time picking a secondary color as you did! Went with the navy and blush pink though… :) The yellow with it is gorgeous!

Ours are navy as well! For the EXACT same reasons! (less harsh than black and oh so classic) We’re pairing it with champagne, copper and chocolate brown. (fall wedding) Excellent choice!

Everyone loved them! They is a picture of them in our featured review for our venue! Cant wait to see more! We did navy and yellow for our wedding. It was gorgeous! My girls were in navy dresses with yellow sashes and carried yellow roses, hydrangeas, and daisies. The men wore grey tuxes with navy ties and my DH had a yellow tie. Our centerpieces were all yellow. Good choice!!!
